Excellent review, Oliver. I don't wish to offend anyone. Terminator Salvation was not a favorite film in the Terminator series. I felt it wasn't the same without Arnold Schwarzenegger. Maybe, if the film is on TV again in the near future I may watch it again and give it another go.

This was a very very very grossly UNDERRATED movie. I think this is the third best movie of the franchise. It had the BEST portrayal of a grown up John Conor, and it showed multiple types of terminators from the motor bikes to the giant hunters. I didn't understand all the Hate it got.

Yup, Salvation is a good Terminator film to me, it was also respectful to the X3 Altered lore built up to that point... which in itself was quite impressive. People forget that it's a continuation of the previous 3 films (Altered timeline and models) and early in the resistances existence. I hoped/hope to see more of the future wars, especially when t-800's are mass produced and the resistance gets organised, something the game Terminator: Resistance does well.

Personally, I applaud it for changing the series’ structure. Every other film is shown from the past. Which is old hat at this point, not to mention the apocalyptic future glimpsed at during the opening of T2 is something everyone remembers. So setting the film in that future is genius, as that’s something everyone WANTS to see. Robots fighting humans, rather than hearing stories about robots fighting humans.

I really liked it too. Its the only one thats set in this dark future we were promised in ev sequels to T2 that I thought we got cheated out of with T3. Dont understand these comments of it not being fresh enough. It was fresh as f.. and clearly the most original compared to any of the sequels. It also has one of the most epic intros to any action movie, the first 2 min are just awesome. I dont understand what the narrator is talking about when he says it bombed even though it had a big pr campaign. This has got to be one of the most under marketed blockbuster sequels I have livef through. Sure you could find the trailer if you googled it and knew what to look for but other than that I think most people in Europe didnt even know this was playing at the cinemas when it did. I dont recall seeing any trailer of it in cinemas in months leading up to the release and did not see any posters of it in public places, whic was common at that time, during its run in tve cinemas, no movie or entertainment magazines news talking about it. It seemed more like a total media black out than a marketing campaign and even though it was a long tine ago now I recall how odd I thought that was at the time. I always thought that was the main reason for it not doing to well at the cinemas, essentially no marketing campaign whatsoever. As I understand it, despite all this, it still performed well enough that a sequel was green-lighted but Halycon films went bankrupt so we didnt get that. That is s big difference though compared to this narrative that Salvation was bad and didnt perform well enough to get a sequel, it actually was green lighted to make another film in what was to become a new trilogy.

My biggest gripe (not just with this but the franchise in general post T2) is how the ultimate killing machines think the most efficient way to wipe out a human is to throw them around the room for 20 minutes or so until the plot demands that they be more efficient about it and stab them through the heart or whatever. Remember the first time we ever saw a T-800 and he ripped a guy's heart out just t get his clothes? It's almost like that first t-800 was an anomaly.
@liquidgeorge7 жыл бұрын
Great point. I fucking hate that in films full stop. A competent writer can create a script to circumvent this issue and still create a feeling of "resistance". T2 achieved this perfectly; you always felt (particularly in the hospital escape scene) that any minor error from the Connors would've resulted in an immediate death at the hands of T-1000.
@KyleS3m3noff7 жыл бұрын
Spot fucking on, mate. In the first two films you're right - there was a palpable sense that if they didn't stop moving or if they got cornered, that was it - lights out. That's where the horror elements came into play. In the later films that got replaced by more typical action-based tropes of "fighting", except doing so had to change the entire way the Terminators worked. Just plain stupid.

"Best sequel after T2"
@derajnitram18827 жыл бұрын
Nothing beats the first two, but Salvation is probably the best sequel of the three that followed after James Cameron told his Terminator story with T1 and T2. I would just put Terminator Salvation above T3, because while not wholly successful, it tried to be different, and go in a different direction, unlike T3 which was basically the same plot of the second film. I completely get the hate Terminator Salvation gets, but I do find it gets far more hate than it may deserve. I won't comment on Terminator 5 as I really don't care at all about it, it's a poorly written, poorly directed movie, with a poor cast for the most part, and does nothing but further messing up the lore, and worse yet does it poorly. I have no interest for a terminator film after the last one.
@ItsDeebs5 жыл бұрын
It's a shame with T5. Because at first when I saw the preview of how it revisits the original movies timeline. I thought that's a cool idea. Go back to where it began and correct it. I would of had the T-800 & T-1000 from T2 sent back to the original timeline, with full knowledge of the events of T1. But just there presences has caused a butterfly effect . Resulting in Sarah, Kyle and Good T-800 versing Bad T-800 and T-1000. But due to Kyle and Sarah being unaware of the ally. They end up fighting off both T-800s & the T-1000. The good one chooses to hunt the other terminators instead. Eventually all paths converge for the final showdown.

@leonardeuler95925 жыл бұрын
@@luke666808g Well, Salvation has a lot of problems: (1) The flashforwards from the first three Terminator films hinted at a horrible future scape of pain, deprivation and ad-hoc guerrilla warfare. However, in Salvation, for a world that is set just fifteen years after a global nuclear holocaust the survivors are fancifully healthy, not to mention hairy. (2) The Terminators cannot kill anymore. Instead of breaking the neck of people, they just throw people. You can say everything you want about the Terminators of T1,T2 and T3, but at least they tried. On the other hand, the Terminators of Salvation don't even try, they became part of the sets. Not to mention Skynet didn't kill Marcus when he refused to obey his orders and that he sent only one Terminator to kill John Connor in a factory which was producing hundreds of Terminators. In T3, Skynet and his machines killed every people that they considered as a threat to their existences, but in Salvation, their just became buffons. (3) John Connor didn't behave like John Connor: Christian Bale was basically wooden and he didn't have John Connor's charisma or John's cleverness. There are many other things to say about it, but I don't have the time, so I stop here.

Everybody acted like it was the end of the world when this movie came out. I found that movie great and i saw this twice in cinema, and in dvd also many times. Iwas so happy waching John Connor fighting in the future a real bad ass no fear soldier. Christian was the best for this role. At the time i didnt mind so much for the skynet trap, and ofcourse it could have been better if some mistakes corrected. But in time, i believe that its going to be the best one sequel after 1 and 2, and it had really great pottentials to be a great trilogy if some mistakes corrected in next 2. To bad they cancelled it. Soon or later, someday you will rewach this movie with another point of view, and youll find out that its a masterpiece With full of great moments of action and acting with big feeling and new ideas, but With some mistakes that it could have been better. Nobody noticed that machines had lazerguns and not the hummans, and it would be great to see in next films how they gainned them, and many more small details that director gave us to thouhgt of them. I don't know what's the thing with Terminator trailers spoiling the movie: -T2: "The Terminator is back...but now he is a good guy!" -TSalvation: "Meet Marcus...who's a cyborg created by Skynet!" -TGenisys: "Here's John Connor...traveling to the past because he's an evil robot now!"

While this film is nowhere as good as T1 and T2, it is the only one of the sequels that hold candlelight to them in my opinion because it does 2 things the other sequels fail to do: 1. Talks about the terminators serious and not treat them like slapstick comedy. 2. Actually tells a different story besides a new improved terminator chasing someone (kinda ironic Camerson said this didn't reinvent the wheel enough but gave Genisys a recommendation)
@HejaWolf7 жыл бұрын
I think I should watch it again. I saw it a long time back in theaters and I liked it back then, though I was 12 at the time. Don't know if my opinion will change or will stay more or less the same when I see it again. I'm sure it'll be better than Genisys though.

I have to say it does make sense that skynet has a personality- being that the original program is ever learning. The t800 in t2 developed over the course of that film after it was switch from read only. It's possible Kyle only really dealt with read only variants.

I think the reason this movie got so much hate from a large portion of the fan base is because it’s story format was different from the previous 3 movies. Instead of doing the whole, “Good Terminator/Kyle Reese is sent back in time to stop the bad Terminator from terminating John/Sarah Connor”, it goes in a completely different direction by instead depicting what is left of a shattered post-judgement day human civilization at war with Skynet and its forces. This is something we only got brief glimpses of in the previous movies, and I’m so glad they emphasized that in this one. It’s a topic that I always wanted to be expanded upon. Other than the rather messy plot, this movie is actually quite good. I recommend it, especially if you haven’t watched any of the movies before.

I was hostile towards the film at the time, but looking back on it Terminator Salvation was decent and the best non-James Cameron film. I agree with Oliver's review for the most part. It was a solid sci-fi film and I think the critical reception would have been better if it was an independent IP, like X-Men: The Last Stand. I also think the reception was bad for Terminator Salvation because critics wanted to make up for giving T3 a pass and because of McG's reputation as a director: just listen to Mark Kermode's review and spends most of his time bashing McG. Because of the failure of TS it plenty much ended McG's career as a blockbuster director: his credits since then have been the godawful This Means War, 3 Days to Kill and a horror comedy called The Babysitter. He also worked on TV shows like Shadowhunters and Lethal Weapon, but he far from being a Neil Marshall who also moved to TV after his films disappointed.

The idea of a Terminator movie about John Connor post Judgement day is amazing. If they just made it R, made the Terminators more of a threat, and upped the screenplay, this could have been a masterpiece and I hope one day we get to see a Terminator movie like that

its harmless to where it can still be considered canon
@saftpackerl4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. But, although english is not my first language, I have to correct you concerning two things: A bad wrap is something you eat...a pita wrap for example. ;) - a bad REP (reputation) is what people who hated it, gave this film. And: A Cannon is something that gets to shoot large projectiles - Canon is a song sung by many voices, with different starting points, or the lore, the groundrules of a church, the whole work of an author etc. Cheers

The Irony of Cameron having a pop at this film not pushing the envelope and then remaking Termie 2 with Dark Fate. For all its flaws Salvation is by FAR the most original narrative of all the non-Cameron sequels, and the only one that was going in the direction I think most fans wanted: The Future War that we see flashforwards to in the first 2 films. The first two acts are pretty solid IMHO, the first most of all.

I always described this movie as "dry". I think it's the most inventive of the sequels following T2, and if they had the chance to improve on this story it could have been interesting to see Kyle get to the point where he has to go back and save Sarah. Full circle. Instead we got that abominable Genyshit. Great retrospective Oliver, I think I'll go back and give it a rewatch!

I wish they had done a sequel to this movie, it's my third favorite of the series. Yes it has quite a few problems but I always find it entertaining when I sit down to watch it. Unlike Terminator 3 which was just a dull and weak movie, and Genysis which was a very strange movie with an admittedly interesting but ultimately extremely poorly excuted idea. The time Kyle Reese goes back to has changed, Sarah Connor has changed, everything has changed that idea actually had me pretty excited when I watched the trailers but they lost me completely when I actually sat down to watch the movie with John Connor being an evil Skynet-possessed cyborg and just how jumbled and convoluted the plot was. Plus I don't even know what do think of the new one Dark Fate. I wish they had made a sequel to Salvation but doubled down on all of the crazy Science-Fiction stuff from the first two films like the laser guns.

The basic idea of a Terminator movie set in the future is actually really good, and is exactly what the franchise desperately needs. Imagine a war movie/science fiction trilogy with the dark atmosphere of T1. The first movie could be about Connor and Reese escaping from a Skynet extermination camp, the second about building the resistance and the third about the final confrontation with Skynet. That could potentially become one of the best trilogies of all time if it had the gritty tone of the original. Unfortunately, that ship has probably sailed for good now.

Ive just come across this Oliver through the algorithm in the subscriber recommendations, and I must say this is by far the best review of the movie I've come across. I recently watched ‘Salvation’ on Hulu and it’s clearly the best sequel since T2. Back then, it was unusual to see a Terminator film without Arnold, and I wish it had a better balance of CGI/practical effects. But the cast is solid and the action scenes are well choreographed.

Out of all the post-T2 sequels, this is the only one that I actually like. Yeah, it's not perfect, but it actually does something original instead of lazily rehashing the first two movies. Additionally, having an entire movie set during the future war is something I've been wanting since I was a kid.
