I think the story goes like this: The discovery of the existence of aliens had set the world confused and in panic. We try to learn their intentions, their language, and their capabilities. Some countries want to fight them in fear, others want to befriend them. Some want to obtain their technology and keep it to themselves to boost their military might, others would declare war on them to either steal that tech or for their own security. If the aliens turn out to be hostile, the entire world gains a common enemy, but not everyone is willing to lend a hand and join the cause. Thus wars are waged for the greater good of humanity. Once every nation in every continent falls under one banner, we take the fight to space.

I have been in the closed beta and been playing this game for almost a year now, its absolutely awesome. If your into 4X games, you will love it. But if your looking for Xcom.. unfortunately this ain't the one.
