Another thing to keep in mind is that Xehanort didn't just take Terra's body, he also took his HEART. Lingering Will is nothing but a lingering will, an echo of Terra, in other words: _a Nobody._ This means that each and every time you've faced Ansem and Xemnas, you were also fighting Terra, Ansem had Terra's heart nestled somewhere deep within him, and Xemnas still most if not all of Terra's memories jumbled together with Xehanort's, glimmers of Terra's personality influences the personalities of both of those two to a noticeable degree. Heck, one scene that gets completely recontextualized is the one in KH2 where Xemnas walks down a long set of stairs and enters a room with Aqua's armor in it, and calls it his _"friend"._ (do note that said scene was added to KH2 prior to the release of BBS in the Final Mix edition.)

Lingering Will is actually a spectral illusion, and not a nobody. A spectral illusion is what remains of a person with a great will, it is always attached to an object. The Organisation one's you fight in KH2 are attached to their weapons, where Terra's is attached to his keyblade and armor. Because he lost his body, his armor replaces it and it's why Lingering Will is not a nobody, Xehanort has stolen the body.

When they lose that Will, they become the Heartless, who function on Instinct. A lot of people try to explain Kingdom Hearts as a story driven game when trying to introduce someone to the series. The reality is, it isn't. It's a character and emotion driven game. It is something you have to experience to understand it. Birth by Sleep hammers this home harder than any game before it. Even more so than 358/2 days (the full game, not just the cutscenes). The end result of Terra's story is pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things. At least until it's brought back into focus later on. The gut punches on the other hand are not.

@@flux_casey Riku "stealing" the keyblade is explained in the same game, showing that the moment during Destiny Islands' destruction when Riku accepted the darkness the keyblade rejected him and went to Sora (went down the list as someone says) and about there only being a single keyblade master, it was also disproven by Dark Riku Himself since he wields a keyblade, the one that Sora uses to free Kairi, also Mickey himself states that his mission is to find a Keyblade from the Realm of Darkness so since the beginning there are multiple wielders, it is more Riku, being consumed by darkness stating that he is the one who is the true hero of "the story" since Sora abandoned him an Kairi according to him, so I never though of it as a retcon as you said Squall/Leon, doesn't really know what he is talking about he just knows that the keyblade a mystical rare weapon

Riku, Sora and Kairi got the power to wield the keyblade from Terra, Ventus and Aqua respectively. The keyblade doesn't choose anyone, the previous wielders chose them. It was just a matter of them having the strength of heart to awaken the power. The details are awkward due to it genuinely being a BbS retcon. But that's the current canon.

It would be more connected if you still have such characters around even in the background just like how you've got other Organization 13 members doing stuff off-screen while other things are happening in the foreground in KH. Just to expound: KH is different since it's an original story that just happens to roll in disney properties because that's the gimmick of the series so to speak. MCU on the other hand is a bunch of different stories that just happen to exist contemporary to each other with the crossover stories taking place whenever the heroes don't need to bother with their own rouges gallery because they've been dealt with in a previous character-specific story. It's the reason why I compare it more to the games that I did (save for Smash) since they do the exact same thing of being wholly original but bringing in other known IPs.

I like the fact that Terra's story goes very paralel to starwars: the old thinking was that the light must overcome the darkness when in reality there must be a balance between both. Then we have the dark master with a capable pupil from the light with some inclination to the darkness, to become his succesor, on in this case, his new vessel

One of my favourite parts in the whole series is the battle with Eraqus, because it shows something important, just as we have seen it many times before we know you can be consumed by darkness in your pursuit of power, or when you give in to negative emotions, but this shows that you can also be blinded by light as Eraqus was, even if he had noble intentions he KNEW that he was wrong by attacking Ventus and Terra, his total aversion of darkness in any shape led him to misuse his light. And this makes it all go full circle, just as we know you can use light for good and darkness for Evil, we've now seen the opposite, as Riku by the end of KH2 is able to use darkness for good without being corrupted and now Eraqus has shown you can use light for bad things, light and darkness are more like an energy to be harnessed (of course without getting into UX spoilers since I think that is a different kind of darkness)

Yeah, and then we later see Sora himself in KH2 and Kh3 use darkness for good. It comes down to the reason behind it: WHY are you using light/darkness. Riku in KH1 used darkness for himself, to get stronger, whereas later in KH2 he uses it protect his friends and help Sora. Motive matters.

Thats how good these games are, you could anaylize all the missing holes and plot points but you dont. because the game is so entertaining, the holes fill themselfs. and the imagination and wonder of realizing that those holes were there to fix in the first place is what makes this series so powerful.

Kingdom Hearts is a jigsaw puzzle where after you put it together it’s a Where’s Waldo spread. The more of the games you play and the story you put together, the more of the greater picture you see and then you can really have fun theorizing and drawing lines and finding new things. As an OG player with the start of the franchise, my favorite memories have always been theory crafting about the series with friends and then getting either affirmation or (in best cases) completely mindblown by reveals in the following releases. I’m loving seeing your journey and you having these same experiences.

Something I've noticed that confuses me, because we never get an explanation, is that Terra for some reason gets random glimpses into the future. When talking to Xehanort in the Keyblade Graveyard about Vanitas, he gets a glimpse at the end of the game, and when talking to Riku, gets a glimpse of Future Riku. I think on a meta level, it's meant to show the inspiration of Anakin Skywalker in the character of Terra, who was very good at sensing the future through the Force. Could he wrong about that though. Doesnt explain it in universe either.

this is also what triggered lingering will into thinking sora WAS xehanort he has ven's heart someone close to xehanort [so it looks like he absorbed ven] and wields riku's keyblade [so it looks to him like sora stole it.] linguring will is terra but it has a very......"simple/boiled down" mindset. its basically a REALLY REALLY OP duhallan/living armor its still terra but a more one track mind terra, if someone's gunna die then it thinks [oh no i have to save them] if it looks like a xehanort, quacks like a xehanort then to it it's a [XEHANORT.....]

One of the things I really love about Kingdom Hearts is that every game in the series plays differently with different mechanics and different feels to it. No one game feels like you're playing something else. Kingdom Hearts 1 distinctly feels like Kingdom Hearts 1 and Kingdom Hearts 2 distinctly feels like Kingdom Hearts 2. Nothing remains the same. And even though Kingdom Hearts 3 has little bits and pieces from a lot of the other series I wouldn't say that Kingdom Hearts 3 handles like any of the other entries.

This also explains why Ansem was at Destiny island years later in the beginning of KH1. He was there before, and now that he was getting older he remembered through Terra's memories of a young boy (Riku) who would make an excellent new vessel. He comes close to possessing Riku as well when you fight him in Hollow Bastion he is nearly fully subsumed by Xehanort.

Good job on him finishing terras game. He’s got real determination to play on critical while having a crap deck. One curaga and a bunch of mid level spells drove me crazy to watch but damn if he didn’t stick it through and beat it like a boss. It’s both impressive and frustrating. BBS is actually a good story as it more than any other KH game is a straight up tragedy and I appreciate it for that

Yes! I wanted to see if you caught onto the Xehanort stuff. THAT is why Xehanort looks so young when we reach Sora's timeline. He's essentially an older Terra, but with Xehanort's heart and darkness. Meanwhile what's left of Terra is waiting in the Keyblade Graveyard. Another small piece of trivia is when Lingering Will said, "I've met you before. No, you're not the one I chose. Where is he?" to Sora. He's referring to Riku since he passed the Keyblade power onto him. Kind of makes you wonder what he would do if he saw Riku. Anyway, great playthrough, my dude! Can't wait for you to do Ventus and Aqua next!

Fun fact that I learned recently is actually a key moment of this game. We know that Sora is the one link to every important keyblade wielder in the series, yeah? One thing that bugged me though is what exactly was his connection to Terra. At first thought you think oh its because he's friends with Riku and Riku has a connection to Terra. But there's an even closer connection that I learned of. I never noticed that even though Riku gains the ability to use a Keyblade from Terra, he doesn't actually get one until 2 when he is no longer completely dark and is deemed a true wielder of both light and shadow. And although theyre similar to keyblades, his Soul Eater is not one. Well the reason for this is is that when the events of 1 happens and Riku gives in completely to the dark and to Ansem he loses that ability that Terra gave him to wield a keyblade. So what happens to that power? It passes on to the next available candidate, Sora. Sora already had the power from Ventus but it lies dormant. That power isn't awakened until much later through Roxas. His original keyblade power is passed on from Terra to Riku to him.

To unlock the ultimate secret you need to collect all of the xehanort’s reports, yup all 13, just like every game, almost like a coincidence if you ask me, nothing intentionally going on there, it’s just always 13 reports, no significance at all. Anyway collect them for the “Secret Episode” .
