This works great for lower slopes, but on steep cliff faces and rocky parts of the terrain it ends up looking unrealistic, sometimes even removing detail which is present in the lower resolution terrain

Reading the paper and jumping to the results I thought the process for a 256->2048 took only 5ms. I hope high-fidelity geologically coherent multi scale planets will be possible in the coming years. I yearn for space.

The edition sequence you see at 2:17 is only a x2 speed-up, so it runs fast enough to edit a terrain interactively.
