In this follow up video, we'll look at where to buy rollers and what it takes to make your own. Texture rollers can be an important tool in your RPG terrain building tool kit. Creating your own rollers using Blender is simple. I'll touch on the basic tools needed, the time it takes and share with you links to great resources.
Amazing terrains for Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer, or your RPG game of choice are faster and easier with DIY texture rollers.

I really want to see a video about how you design these. I just downloaded them the other day, and was looking for more info about making my own, and stumbled across this video.

I have it on the list. It's pretty easy... ish... with a little working knowledge of Blender. The nice thing is Blender is free and doesn't take a super powerful computer to run on. If you do a quick search on making texture rollers with Blender, there may be a few out there but I find that they often go so fast that they fly over some really critical steps that leave ya hanging a bit. I'll see if I can get that in the queue! All the best!

I would take a look at rollers from www.greenstuffworld.com/ They focus on scale rollers for model makers. I have a couple of their products and the quality is outstanding. The drawback for me is the time and shipping but ultimately they're worth the wait! Hope that helps.

A quick comment... I love your rollers on My mini factory :) They are awesome. I only had an issue with one, more user error than issue with the roller . i reckon it was because I hadn't left the Greenstuff long enough to set so it was still sticky.

Some of them have pretty deep cuts where I could see material getting caught. I use Super Sculpy instead of epoxy putty. It requires baking and can be a bit brittle but works really well when glued to a base. Happy rolling!! Cheers!

I am getting into making belts, and this video was the inspiration I've been looking for. I have 0 experience with 3d printing or making any kind of computer graphic. Sounds like blender is my go to option for what I have in mind. Is drawing something and layering it to work as a rolling pin fairly easy?

I had a little bit of 3D modeling experience and fairly limited printing experience when I made this video. I just followed another online tutorial and had some really good luck with it. I wouldn't say it's easy because it requires getting into new software and new skills that can feel overwhelming at times. What I will say is it's absolutely doable and possible for regular ol' human beings to make cool texture rollers with a little bit of patience and willingness to jump into it. Blender is free so there's no need to invest in expensive software. This tutorial - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKq6imVseclriJo - is a little dated because Blender keeps getting better but all of the concepts remain the same. The cool thing is... if you figure a few things out in Blender... it can open up a lot of different possibilities as 3D printing comes down in price and up in quality. Another series of videos you should check out are by Blender Guru. Just about everyone getting started in Blender goes through his doughnut tutorial and he does a great job keeping them fresh... the videos... not the doughnuts. I'm glad you found a bit of inspiration. My approach is to generally just give things a whirl and see if they click. There are plenty of times I'm frustrated because I'm doing things for the third or tenth time but when it all comes together into something that kinda sorta looks like what you wanted... it's magical! Best of luck with the belt making! Cheers!

Sorry for the slow response! There was a tutorial out there that I used but I realized that a few key steps are glossed over. Blender has also updated several times since that content creator made their video. I have been thinking about making an updated tutorial. It's pretty easy even if you don't know Blender. Let me see what I can do... life is still a little crazy these days but I'm trying to carve out more time to be in the studio... my happy place. Thanks for the suggestion/comment/question! All the best!

I love how, on a video that is literally 10 minutes and 24 seconds long, you say "...you can watch a tutorial that is 10 minutes long - not by me because I can never keep anything down to 10 minutes" 😂

What other ways are these rollers made? There are lots of small businesses making these, I can’t imagine they are printing them out at 5-10 a day? Laser plotter type set up I’m thinking? Not very knowledgeable about these machines 🤨
@RandomMakingEncounters
@RandomMakingEncounters Жыл бұрын
Yes! You're spot on! The rollers from Green Stuff World are laser etched on acrylic rod. I have a couple and they're really nice (no envelope stuffed with cash exchanged for that comment). Laser engraved rollers would be faster but have the downside of having very subtle laser lines and you can't really get really dramatic variation in depth. Resin printers are getting faster. If I were to really really want to sell rollers, I'd print one, cast a silicone mold, and cast the parts in a reasonably tough resin. No matter how you slice it, getting into the manufacturing business is a big investment in time and resources. I don't know how some folks stay afloat... many don't. Materials have become insanely expensive and time is money. Thanks for the thought provoking comment! Cheers!
