Northern white rhino embryo update! 🌟 BioRescue and Ol Pejeta announced that another three new northern white rhino embryos were created - now there are twelve! 🦏 The team decided not to perform an oocyte collection on Nájin, the oldest of the two northern white rhinos. So far, none of Nájin’s eggs have been of sufficient quality to turn into viable embryos - all 12 embryos produced so far used oocytes from Fatu. In further developments on the ground at Ol Pejeta, two southern white rhino females were moved into the enclosure with Owuan, the sterilised southern white rhino bull who is serving as the oestrus detector for the females as they come into season. The team is carefully monitoring the welfare of all the animals and will start to observe and record their behaviour in preparation for the first embryo transfers which are likely to begin by the end of the year. The only problem with this is, that the genetic diversity is very lov, and therefore extremely vulnerable to changes. It depends on how many different males there was collected semen from. Let’s say it was 60 males, the genetic diversity would still be very small. It would require many, many, many years to rebuild the diversity, because it requires mutations, sudden changes and random changes to the DNA. An example: if all humans had very little genetic diversity, we would either, have all died to COVID or we would all survive COVID. But because humans have a very big genetic diversity, some have small random mutations, that makes us immune to some diseases, that other people would have died from.
@ajr00472 жыл бұрын
This could actually blossom something else. If enough are males, they could be bred with closer species of Rhinos possibly, then we hope that the offspring contain as many traits as the near-extinct rhino than it does the othrr

Captive breeded animals are mostly isolated from such biosphere changes and genetic diversity isn't a big issue. Though it may make problems in later reintroduction.
