Baboons and lions may not seem the likeliest of allies, but in Tanzania they’ve formed an unusual partnership. At the edges of a year-round waterhole in Ruaha National Park, they work together - against the other animals.
↠ For more amazing lion stories check out our Nature is Brutal series: • Nature is Brutal
In astonishing footage that gets up close and personal, we’ll show you how these intelligent primates have learned to betray their natural instincts, and how both baboons and lions benefit from the arrangement. Be warned - you may never trust a baboon again . . .

I don't understand the constant use of the word betrayal in this. What had the animals benefiting from the baboon alarm system, been doing symbiotically to help the baboons? I honestly dont know, so this is not a rhetorical question just an honest one to gain knowledge. To me this is evolution at its finest, and a prime example of mother nature's majesty and beauty. Betrayal just seems like a ugly representation of just how amazing an adaptation this is in my humble opinion. Thanks for the video either way it was fascinating!

Baboons can gang up on lions and do them serious injury. I wonder if this happened and the lions learned not mess with the baboons....or the tribe of lions used to be smaller. I bet they aren't quite as friendly with eachother as this video makes it seem like.

someone mentioned in another thread: most herbivores go back to drinking once the lioness has caught any sizeable prey anyway. baboons probably just took it a step further and helped repeat the pattern. also, it's not like we actually know what the baboons or lions are thinking... baboons aren't getting paid to be an early warning system for these other drinkers, so they must've figured out they could alert their troop without alerting everyone else.

It's better defined as a "mutualistic relationship", aka both parties benefit. The fact is, a whole lot of savannah animals have a commensal relationship with baboons, meaning that the other parties benefit but the baboon sees little to no benefit with their alerting of predators. For unknown reasons, the baboons of this group decided that traditional commensal relationship wasn't benefitting them like this one does. I'd love to know how the baboons not only decided to enter this relationship with these lions, but also how they convinced the lions to enter it as well, but that would mean a whole lot more work for the zoologists who study this.

@@AnomiEj From the wiki article on survival instinct, aka self-preservation: "Self-preservation is essentially the process of an organism preventing itself from being harmed or killed and is considered a basic instinct in most organisms." But also: "Self-preservation is also thought by some to be the basis of rational and logical thought and behavior." Basic instincts do not exist in a vacuum. In a complex, intelligent animal, instincts are wired into a brain that also contains a frontal cortex and rational thought. So there's definitely interplay between the two. Also from the wiki article: "However, when introduced to a novel threat, many species will have a self-preservation response either too specialised, or not specialised enough, to cope with that particular threat." This is why enhanced intelligence makes the survival instinct more effective. Because it's an adaptation to increase the complexity and flexibility of your response to threats.

I recall a lecturer in college who specialised in animal psychology warning about being too anthropomorphic when explaining animal behaviour, i.e. ascribing human-like intentions and intelligence, in this case not only to the baboons but the lions too. This could just be a case where two populations, normally predator and prey, have evolved to live peacefully alongside one another because the predator favours another prey and has little interest in the baboons. I'm not saying there couldn't be some kind of pact of machiavellian intelligence but it's going a long way beyond the evidence!

I think the baboons might really have crafted a tactic here, as it is not their natural behavior to not hide from the Lion. That partnership reminds me a bit of the African honeyguide birds that have learnt to direct people straight to wild beehives so that they can get to share in the meal after the humans have safely extracted the honeycombs 😁

Now do you know this? The bee-eater also has a sinister side of the situation. If you double cross the bee-eater and leave nothing (no honey) for the bird, it has a way of punishing you. Next time it may lead you to a dangerous situation, to a snake or a dangerous animal. Problem is, since it cannot recognise one human from another, the victim might be someone different altogether. So next time you follow a bee-eater, be very alert. If you or anyone does not trust me on this one, please ask any African honey collector who usually follows bee-eaters.
