Terraria, but the entire world is filled with SHIMMER...

This is the first thing I thought to try once shimmer was added to Terraria. Is it a good idea? No definitely not, but we're doing it anyway.

I think for the wall of flesh you should try using the instant exploding dynamite, it would be really interesting to try since normally you have to try and guess where the wall will be, but with this you have to deal with shimmer and try not to get killed by the wall while getting close enough to hit it, without having to clear the shimmer, although all of this depends on if the dynamite will damage enemies in the underworld with shimmer

Strangely, this reminds me of Metroid - areas that you previously accessed are locked off when they flood with shimmer, forcing you to find new ways around. Of course, the solution here is mostly to dig more, but I did appreciate the subtler discoveries, like using a hook while falling into shimmer or engineering protected pockets of air.

Angel statue plus shimmer equals aether monolith. Monoliths can be placed in vanity accessory slots now. This allows you to get the starry background wherever you want, so you can have it in future playthroughs.

If I had to hazard a guess, the weird momentum at 8:22 was from shimmer making you faze through objects while also deactivating your tools and stuff, combined with there being a hook on a block. Since the hook was grappled onto something that wasn't solid, it went away and forced you in that direction Basically the same reason for why opening a door you're grappled on makes you move in that direction

Don't Dig Up is a really cool remix. Duke Fishron drops the Aqua Scepter and it's one of the best weapons in the game! The selection of Boggly Woods as a track for this video really fits. Shimmer's really invocative of the whole style of that area, it feels like.

I think I have an answer as to how the surface drained. Whenever shimmer flowe into a sprite (mostly demon alters here) that also has lava in it, it deletes the shimmer, but not the lava. I found this out when making my own shimmer world and saw the surface keep emptying of shimmer.

I think fishing in lava could be really good here. wet bombs that you can make into dry bombs, plus Superheated Blood for zooming around in hell. you would need to drain a big portion of shimmer to stop the hell critters from turning into faelings though

For WoF, you could take advantage of how you're immune to explosions while submerged in shimmer and also of how arrow projectiles bounce off of shimmer. Alternate between being above shimmer using arrows, and being under shimmer to spam bombs.

One tactic that might help prevent shimmer floods reaching vital areas is adding doors every now and then in your passageways, they'll be a barricade and prevent the shimmer leaking down further in the case of disaster

I'm new to the channel but I watched a couple of your older videos today as well as this one. I like the content and you've gotten quite a couple laughs out of me. So I decided to sub even though I'm no good at terraria so none of the stuff you talk about makes any sense to me. And when I say I'm no good, I mean I have never even initiated a boss fight before. I know you just started this, but I have a playthrough idea although it might not be possible to do "Terraria, but crawltipedes are always active" The name speaks for itself, you can't go in the air for 3 seconds or you will be snapped in half by a crawltipede. You could also do terraria w/o jumping but I feel this would be much more interesting. You can jump, it's just that you can't stay in the air for too long. There is one rule: you must have shiny red balloon equipped at all times, 1. Because I don't know if the maximum player jump height without anything can trigger crawltipedes 2. It gives the crawltipedes more time to kill you. Also, Taking advantage of the fact that you almost always play classic mode, you could give yourself a demon heart so that the shiny red balloon won't really effect the amount of accessory slots due to you only being able to have 6 accessory slots in expert and master mode since you would still have five accessory slots left just like in classic mode. I don't know if it would be possible to do this since I have never hacked/ modded myself, but you should try it anyway because I think it would be quite interesting.

pretty sure you get demounted in shimmer no matter if cloak or not just checked it and you actually can swim in it but you do need the cloak and you can't really go down on it else the clak gets used and you get shimmered

I believe that if you wanted to fight the wall of flesh, fishing in the underworld and trying to find the "superheated blood" lava shark mount in an Obsidian crate would be a good route. it can swim very, very fast and it should work in the shimmer so if you can get it, it would work just fine fighting the wall. You could also try to get the turtle mount in golden crates which would still be able to move pretty fast in shimmer, just far far less quickly than the lava shark. edit: aw man, I didn't realize this video was posted like three months ago.

Half myth to be busted, half wall of flesh strat idea: do the lava shark or turtle mounts work in shimmer? If so, then you may not need to do much wall of flesh prep. Great video as always!

Idea: When mining, have an area under you so that if you get shimmered, you only move a few blocks

The grappling hook launching you sideways through walls when combined with insubstantial is really cool. If you haven't tried, you can grapple to the middle of a door and when moving into it will launch yourself through. A fair guess the grappling hook accelerating you to its max speed before disappearing when the "wall" is no longer there. This must operate on the same concept

You should definitely try to get a star cloak. If you shimmer it, it becomes a shimmer cloak that makes you immune to shimmer phasing. Getting it will make the run so much easier.

You could make use of the liquid deletion thing where if they try to make a solid somewhere there’s already a block (like a minecart track), it just deletes the liquid where the block would’ve been, to clear out larger areas with well thought out tunnels, if you think that’s not too cheesy.

Dunno if you'll see this since I'm a couple days late to comment, but seeing the sheer amount of shimmer got me thinking of ways to get rid of it and in theory you could by making it transform into aetherium with lava (since it doesn't look like water is available? Maybe I missed it). Assuming there's no water, angler rewards also aren't realistically an option, and by extension the necessary sponges. BUUUUUT since lava exists, while the quantity of available lava pales in comparison to shimmer, this could technically be bypassed with liquid bombs and the demolitionist (in theory). You'd have to get a fishing rod & lavaproof net to catch underworld critters to fish in lava lakes to get obsidian/hellstone crates, but from these liquid bombs are super common, and as long as you possess at least one (including typed ones like if you fill it with lava first before trading with him) he'll sell more for only 25s, granting access to unlimited non-shimmer fluids. Going even further with this, you could even put water in your world if you get a sink as a drop from a pirate invasion (since all the other sinks require being crafted with a water bucket) and use it to craft wet bombs specifically. Overall very impractical, but potentially a more permanent solution to shimmer than just having to dig endlessly deeper pockets to drain it into; but at the very least having access to water by looting a sink could be worthwhile for mass producing potions.

i bet you could try fishing for either an endless water bucket or endless lava bucket, that way you could solidify shimmer as much as you need to.

An excellent video! If it’s not too detrimental to your mental (or physical) health, I’d love to see a series of it. I am, granted, also not the one stuck phasing through reality every time I slip in a puddle, so perhaps I am biased in desiring more, but I find the puzzle aspect of this quite engaging. And I don’t know that your geology major will help you with the environmentally engineering Terraria, nor do I know if your oceanography minor will, but if you find a way to tie either in, I think that would be quite fun (I was just reminded of it earlier in the video, as you mentioned you would have to be doing a lot of environmental alteration to get through the world).
