So today, and potentially one of the last, we take a look at the pure insanity that is maximum sentry summons. Lunar Portal Staff's buff in 1.4.4 was insane. 2x the damage, 3x the attack speed, double the laser amount, faster laser speed, and more range makes it one of the best summoner weapons in the game.

It also helped with the 1.4.4 change to stardust helmet that made it also give a +1 sentry summon. Summoner is so fun having like 7 terraprisma and 5-6 sentry at the same time is kinda busted for sure

@@gunstru summoners have received so many buffs it's hard to believe that 1.3 summoner and 1.4.4 summoner are the same class. Which is definitely a good thing, because 1.3 summoner was AWFUL.

The reason why sentry accessories don't stack is so you can't get a ridiculous amount of damage in pre hardmode

If you’re using the Red Riding armor and Explosive Traps for OOA, supplementing them with Frost Hydras is actually pretty effective, as the oiled debuff will cause the frostbite to deal an extra 25dps, for a total of 50dps. The Hydras can also help take down weaker airborne targets.

I think the Frost Hydra thing is because of how summon attacks work with invincibility frames, there're videos that explain it better but basically some summons in the game (I don't know why) have their projectiles interfere with the proyectile of other summons of the same type, this is more noticeable in pre-hardmode since you do more damage with a mix of different summons than a bunch of the same type, thankfully Hardmode gives summoner more weapons that make it so the minion hits multiple times even if it's the same type, but there's still exceptions.

In my current Calamity only sentries run I found out about how crazy Moon Lord's sentries are. They carried me through Providence, Polter, and soon DoG. All but the three final bosses defeated by Moon Lord drops... Actually crazy

I love being a Summoner, but I always have one of the Old One's accessories to give me that extra sentry and use the table religiously. A lovely feature of summons is that they can be placed in rooms away from you. When I am doing exploring underground, I like to set a sentry behind me so it's hard to sneak up on me, and one or two in a cave I've yet to go in. Hydra may not be the most impressive, but as a rear guard and clearing the way in fresh caves, I think he's an excellent mook who's easy to obtain.

I love having the table and then just placing 2 centries as I go and see fit... Just a extra toy on my hotbar... I often use the aura thing from old mans army. You can place it on a lot of places and its just easy to cheese things with. Or just place something down as I am afk or just wating... But I only use 2 because I dont feel like wasting a slot on something or switching gear. I just use the 2 free ones... You only have to remember to click the table after every time you die. I also do the same with summons. I just always have 2 active just doing extra side damage when I am just a complete different class....

The frost hydra really needs the space laser’s 1.4 buff. It would even make sense because it’s a *hydra*. Inverse the buff, 3x projectile, 2x attack speed, maybe 2x damage.

I think the crux of the issue is that the projectiles interfere with each other. But I wouldn't be opposed to a stat buff as well.

I always loved the Frost Hydra ever since it was introduced but it really hurts me how its projectiles struggle with enemies. Changing the immunity frame type and a slight boost to shooting speed is basically required at this point, especially with how many buffs the Lunar Portal received in 1.4.4

Frost Hydra projectiles don't have local inmunity frames, which means many of them will cause to interfere with each other.

I think the worst thing about the frost hydra staff is it’s immunity frames. If two frost hydras hit an enemy at the same time, only one does damage. You have to stagger them in a strange way to get the DPS you’re expecting, because the immunity frames their projectiles apply to enemies are too high.

Because sentries count differently compared to summoned creatures, you can be a heavy summoner with defense and attack. It's dope.

I feel like max sentry’s being the best is due to the fact that they are meant to add on to you dps and with the natural cap being so low most sentry’s ( sorry frost hydra) damage is increased to help with that.

As someone who has used both extensively, I personally think that the Frost armor is better. Yeah, the forbidden tornado can basically be a second Nimbus rod, but the Frostbite debuff is inflicted every time a shot or melee strike is landed so it's a much more consistent DoT. Plus, if you pair the Frost armor with the flamethrower you can tear through everything up to the cultist. It is BRUTAL

The only thing the frost hydra is good for is pvp on 1.3. You can summon it on players with pvp on for 300 free damage and you can spam it. Its so funny with friends since you can basically summon it anywhere.

I think that frost hydra should be replaced with something else like maybe the reverse of tiger staff, it could be like a snow flake staff that summons low damage snowflakes like the blade staff but it spawns three flakes per use so one maybe deals 23 damage and have 12 armor pierce I feel that it would be a thousand times better and maybe would need a nerf but hey it’s just a idea

I never liked that several different sentry accessories cant stack, they could add one that has evvect and then others as vanity, if they dont want to them be stackable.. it is confusing people who arent deeply experienced with game and its mechanics or arent constantly checking wiki pages for all details, since most similar/same effect accessories do stack as far I know (only other thing I can recall now is differently colored glowing fishing bobbers)

you have Melee sub classes and Ranger subs. Mage is Mage and Summoner already has the potential sub class ready Note: I count a class a sub if lets say melee "normaly" sword and tanky goes yoyo and damage...

1.4.4 lunar portal is nuts. I, for one, use sentries mostly while I'm building or in bosses, but that class have some huge gaps on It. I presume it is mostly because it is free DPS for most of us, with the duration being huge now, and the buffs from the war table being permanent. PS: Now I know that those acessories don't stack. What a scam!
