I took a film study class in college where we had to give impressions of Halloween and so many people had the "just because it was first doesn't mean it's good" viewpoint. Very frustrating

Admittedly, the film did take a while to really grow on me. My initial reaction when i saw it as a teenager was that it was good, but i didn't get the big deal everyone made about it. Then, after watching documentaries, reading reviews, etc, I came to appreciate why people liked it. It got to where my feelings were, "I admire and respect it. I dont love it like everyone else seems to, but I like it enough " Then, when Halloween 2018 came out, i went back and rewatched it, and now it's one of my favourite horror movies ever. It's just a shame it took all that time.

When I first saw Halloween on VHS in the 90’s, you know what I felt was scariest about this film? I found Loomis to be scary, all his talk about Michael being “purely and simply evil” and his “darkest eyes, the devil’s eyes” dialogue. I found all of Loomis’ exposition to be scary, that and the music. Loomis and the music is what ultimately made Michael scary. It was the marriage of the score and the exposition about Michael.

There are a few moments in Halloween that I find to be odd choices. Some of the shots remind me of a painting rather than a movie. The beginning when the parents arrive, taking the mask off Michael. They simply stand there and stare. Taking a step back, and puzzled. Loomis at the cemetery. They find the hole of the missing tombstone and they simply stand and stare. The worst acting of the movie is probably early on when Loomis says that the evil is gone just after Michael drives away in the station wagon. I've always thought it was over acted.

Halloween is a timeless classic, the godfather of slashers! I'll be perfectly honest.....Halloween has several problems; Michael driving the most identifiable car imaginable, takes place in L.A and not in the fall, the store Michael stole the mask and knives from makes zero sense. Michael "knowing how to drive "despite being institutionalized" never ever bothered me, because as Loomis says "maybe he had driving lessons" which does make sense and reasonable considering the fact that Michael was suppose to be RELEASED. Loomis was gonna drug him during the court proceeding and Michael would of known that Loomis would try and sabotage his release and it makes sense that he'd be given driving lessons before his release. Among other basic stuff. So Halloween is in no way a perfect film. So all that said....Halloween is a classic and always will be. I love Halloween. I love it. The directing, the mood, the characters, the soundtrack and how effectively it's used, the suspense, the tension, the thrills, etc. It's all great. Damn near perfect. I love Laurie and her friends. I love Dr.Loomis. I can totally 100% forgive it's flaws I just mentioned and go "it doesn't even matter, because the movie is just so good." LOL "It doesn't even have jump scares" I totally fucking called it. When i saw you did this video my immediate reaction was "it's gonna probably be a bunch of 15-21 year olds" And again, I'm more of a Friday the 13th and A nightmare on elm street fan. I only like 3 films out of the entire Halloween franchise; Halloween [1978], Halloween 3, and Halloween 4 and I'd give Halloween a 5/5. Also, is the original Halloween better then the original friday the 13th? As much as I've grown to love the original movie more and more, yes, Halloween is better. Is Halloween better then A nightmare on elm street? Yes, absolutely. And in terms of the time period and Halloween's reflection of society and it's audience and the fears....the 70's was the decade of the serial killer. The 70's also had a giant crime explosion. Violent crime had tripled in the 70's and 80's. California was basically a serial killer's paradise. Seriously. California has the most serial killers out of any other state in the U.S. So the whole idea of "the stalking serial killer" who appears to be "motiveless" "just wants to kill just because they want to." was terrifiying. Same reason why we saw all these vigilante movies in the 70's and 80's. Because crime was on the rise and it spoke to people's fears of this crime wave. Serial killers in the 2020's, don't really exist. Not to the extent they did back in the 70's and 80's. Those were the "epidemic years" You only really see the rise of serial killers in South American, Africa, or Russia. In the U.S. it's all about the "mass killer" specifically the "mass shooter" And I'll admit this and I'll say it right now. My thoughts on Poltergeist are "this is overrated and this is SPECIAL EFFECTS the movie". I*am not at all a fan of The exorcist and I also don't like The omen. Now does that mean I hate those movies, or would give those movies a 1 star? No, just not for me. I don't get it.

Actually I agree with some of these people. I've soured on the film over the years, and I've only seen it maybe a dozen times, since I was a teenager. I know many have watched it way more but I would say it's not aging great with me and some others. I had to back off watching the sequels every Fall too cause I was just getting burnt out on the franchise. It is slow, the characters are weak, I really don't get care for Curtis much, as an actor or her character. I always thought it was unrealistically jarring that it's broad daylight outside the hardware store, then Annie and Laurie drive a few more blocks and it's suddenly dusk/night, like he should've filmed a couple more scenes of it gradually getting dark or something. I think I prefer Halloween 2 but I'd say the original probably has gotten overrated over time. I'd rather watch Black Christmas or Just Before Dawn or a bunch of other slashers really. I'd say it's a dated film that most hardcores clutch to due to nostalgia and it kicking off slasher popularity. Also the knowing how to drive bit is a logical plot hole Carpenter just glossed over.

Everyone complains about the same thing: "the beginning and the end are good, but the rest is boring and slow." It’s not a matter of the current audience or the time period. I, for example, love old movies, black and white or silent, with lots of dialogue that keeps us engaged. Halloween doesn’t have any of that. Between the beginning and the end, there’s a huge gap-boring dialogues from the girls, the Doctor playing detective and narrating Michael’s life, which also doesn’t explain much. He’s always saying that the guy "is evil." This movie could have been a short film. I'll say it again: a good beginning, a good ending, but getting to the end is painful. You could take the movie, cut it, watch half an hour of it, and then say - I loved this short film. Tell me, if this movie were released today, what would you say about it?

Okay this is easy! For one, these movies are all subjective depending on what era you grew up in, what YOU consider scary, or not! And/Or depending on what genre of movies you are into! I would never argue with anyone in their opinion on a film because we all have different perspectives! I saw the original Halloween film at 9 years old in the 70's and it scared the living daylights out of me!😂 And it is THEE greatest horror film ever made in my opinion! 👊🏾

To be fair, there's probably sociological/cultural reasons that a lot of younger people wouldn't "get" Halloween. What I mean by that is they don't necessarily have any background on the era from which it cames. The 70s were a time when serial killers were becoming much more of a thing, but there was also more social trust in some areas of society (although I suppose trust in gov't was on downturn due to Watergate, Church Committe, etc.). The characters in the movie aren't "dumb". They're just not living in a community that is paranoid about murder and mayhem coming to their quiet town b/c there's social trust in Haddonfield. Part of what Carpenter was doing is playing with the diea that there's something darker lurking beneath the picture perfect facade of suburbia. But that's become old hat now and probably seems like a "no, duh!" thing for younger folks. People have to understand the context of the film and the time it came out of.

It's true, Michael Myers is a stalker than a killer. The opening scene and last scene are the best. This movie is a Thriller genre to me. I say Halloween 2 is better than the first movie because it's more Horror and focus on the story. Kills are better. You can see Michael Myers as a killer than just a random person looking after people around the town.

I think its "slow" if you're thinking to get to the killing scenes but that wasn't the purpose of the original film. Pop culture made Michael into this crazy killing slasher villain, but the original wasn't following any slasher tropes when it was being made, it was more of a small atmospheric, suspenseful indie film. It had stalking, you say? Well that was the point lol, and if you keep that in mind you will notice its actually a really tight script and a fast moving film, every scene is very economical and without fillers. I find Laurie to be an interesting character even though we dont know much about her. She is likeable and she doesn't seem to fit in with those around her. You get a sense that she wants to do the things her friends do yet doesn't feel secure with herself. "you could do that i couldn't" She feels more comfortable with her introverted and childlike self when around the kids. Most of the things these people want in the movie are there but they are very subtle. Theres also alot of things that are hinted and not stated, ive had fun watching this film connecting certain dots. Some of these leave me thinking what was intentional, what was subtext and what was not? and i respect that in a slasher flick.

@@TheShapeKills22I DO agree that the portrayal of Michael is bad in H20… but I disagree with all the rest… especially saying Laurie is bald, that’s a little exaggerating. I said I liked H20, but it’s not the best of the franchise. The best one to me is 2018. And yes, the original, to me, is boring. Things happen in the last 20 mins… and it ain’t great stuff either. At least H20 can keep me awake. The acting is also terrible in the og. Only good actors in that one are Jamie and Donald. Oh, and the kills in ‘78 are very bad too, except Bob… but even Halloween Ends did that death better.

I firmly disagree with that assessment. You gotta remember we're in the "elevated horror" era where names like Aster and Eggers rule. Unless films are deemed smart or artsy, they get swept aside. Sure, IP films like 5 Nights... And Scream did great but those are successful because of the fandoms, not generational crowds. No one saw the bottom of the barrel films you're describing like Tarot or Imaginary, but Late Night With the Devil and First Omen have found audiences in that demographic. I'm in that age group and I can't say I know many people who see low end horror anymore, it's very much about quality for the younger crowd and that shows in how few slasher films are made now compared to 10 years ago. And let's not pretend 40+ year olds were watching the highest echelon of prestige horror, it was 90% trash cinema that survived on "fun times", rock, and gore. It's the 40+ year olds I see at cons rocking shirts for slasher films and heavy gore films.

@@Zombie_Trooper But I think that’s the point, in a way. The younger generation seems to only deem a movie worthy if it has layer upon layer, and drowned in metaphor and symbolism. Not every movie is like that. Halloween, is a simplistic film. I find most “elevated horror” to be pretentious. Because in a way, it’s saying horror isn’t good enough as is, and needs to be improved. So when something like Halloween is so straight forward, they find it boring. Nevermind the fact that Halloween has a lot of symbolism and messaging in it, it’s just not heavy handed

@TheLostRiverDriveIn I absolutely agree with you on that count, because I too think pretentiousness is rampant these days, but I can't quite agree on it being generational since I don't really see young people disassociating from classics or films with "bite". Whether it be at cons, or at local trivia nights, or just at the theaters, I'm always seeing teens and 20-somethings enjoying classics. A few months ago I saw Hausu with a packed theater of college kids. Last month I saw a double feature night with full on families. I think that the original comment just doesn't give them enough credit as active viewers, ya know?

@@TheLostRiverDriveIn I’m on multiple Halloween pages on fb and insta and the 30 and under crowd constantly deem Halloween 4 is their fav while Halloween 78 is their 3rd 4th or 5th favorite 🙄reasons given Michael doesn’t kill enough people Michael is not in enough scenes and of course they just don’t get why Michael isn’t explained 🙄so i stand by my original comment

And to this day it’s considered a horror classic and staple. Carpenter’s The Thing didn’t get great reviews either and it too is a classic. Who roots for the villain? That’s nuts. I read the description and thought it would be reviews from when Halloween came out. I think that would be more interesting and authentic. So many people who do “reviews” these days are just trolls trying to make a name for themselves.
