@L33tSkE3t2 ай бұрын
As an American, I honestly hate pleasantries because they do feel fake and unnecessary and as a more reserved and anxious individual, I do find them to be unpleasant. However, as a socially adept person, I accept them as the norm and that they are mostly rhetorical and the fact that no one is actually interested in how I am / doing, so they ultimately don’t matter. Even visiting the south, being from Philadelphia, it was kind of jarring, as people tend to be more overtly “friendly” there and it felt a bit overwhelming, inauthentic and insincere but, I adapted because it wasn’t a big deal. Also, when I go abroad, I try to be respectful and that would include maybe not posting all of my criticisms of a country for views online, especially after having just been a guest in said country but, IDK… That’s just me.

My favorite thing is when Europeans criticize Americans for being too religious or weirdly friendly. Because I had a teacher from Colombia (she also lived in Argentina and had traveled to many other Latin American countries) who complained Americans were too tight-lipped about religion and wierdly cold and unfriendly. Wow. It's almost like the US has been heavily influenced by both European and Latin American culture and has ended up at a middle point between the two! I wonder how many of these US-hating Europeans have traveled to New World countries outside the US/Canada. Would they feel comfortable making the same vitriolic comments about Mexican, or Panamanian, or Argentinian culture? Not to say the US is perfect or that we should never criticize another country's culture. But some people seem to just rabidly hate specific other countries for no objective reason.

@@mooseboose656 their point isn't that tipping is a system that is beneficial to people whose income depends on it but that tipping is deliberately set up to keep the owners rich and shift part of the wages on to the customers. This turns the waiter for example in a tense relationship with the customer while the customer has no choice but to either pay the tip to do the kind thing or not pay because it's just irrational but harm the waiter instead of the people keeping the system in place. I don't think it's that the question itself is "fake" I think too many people (myself often included unfortunately) often just _presume_ nobody wants to actually know how we're doing. I do, stranger. Let me tell you about OURS! Worst of all worlds - how's that sound? Have to take public transport? How about GETS TO take public transport? Literally has to drive everywhere because there is no other viable option sounds even worse, doesn't it? Oh, wait: Can't afford a car... just mirror that on the right, and couple it with "but needs one desperately just to work and get food". Thrown in jail for unpopular speech? How about you ask yourself the question, who has the highest prison population? And treats prisons as torture centers with no intent on helping integrate them back into society? But it's okay, because we all have guns and when they get out, they can unleash their unbridled rage on whatever unsuspecting innocents they want to! I guess it's true what they say, the grass is always greener.
