I think the worst type of villain is the kind where you can see precisely what they were going for and how the don't take the time to evolve them properly into who they're meant to be. That's part of the reason twist villains tend to fail, because some movies/games/shows don't take the time to lay out the motivations bit by bit leading up to the reveal. Or Heaven forbid, the sympathetic villain who you know at the end is going to have a redemption that *could* have happened at any point but they hold their antagonism until the very end before dying. An idea I've always had to fix Rose's motivations was to switch the Main Story Plot with the Post Story Plot. Have the Royal Brothers be the main antagonists and their shenanigans causes Eternatus to awaken from the Power Plant chamber and absorb Dynamax Energy from all over Galar to restore its original form and bring about the Darkest Day. You can still have Rose as the main antagonist for the Post Game Plot. He tries to keep the situation under control as best he can, but ultimately fails and has to rely on the Player Character and their friends to stop Eternatus. This change no longer makes Rose out to be an idiot and plays up his actual admirable traits, like how much he cares for the Galar Region.

Akechi's motives to go after Shido is more clear in the JP ver and with Japanese society in context. He is an orphan and his mother committed suicide while he was young. Orphans are known as black sheep in Japan, so people, employers, and schools try to steer clear of them. Akechi suppressed by society by factors out of his control, and he became resentful. So at the age of 15, Akechi was kicked out of his orphanage (at that age, orphans are considered to be old enough to be able to take care of themselves), and he was homeless for a while. The only option that he had was to beg Shido to give him a home and to help him, and if it weren't for Akechi's "Call of Chaos" metaverse abilities, Akechi would have been ignored by Shido and left to fend for himself. These are the reasons and motives for his definition of rebellion, and he has two personas to define that. Give the small roaming gangs of criminals _achievable and unambiguously bad_ motivations they can sometimes get away with, like stealing peoples' Pokemon or using Pokemon to steal things from people. Give some down to earth personal stakes to stopping them. They don't need to be an advanced and well-organized crime syndicate, they don't need to be "well-intentioned" eco-terrorists destroying human civilization for their self-perceived love of nature, they don't need to be a cult bent on (controlling time and space, activating an ancient WMD, opening wormholes to let in monstrosities from another dimension...), they just need to be bad people using their Pokemon for bad things, and clearly making the lives of normal people worse until your player stops them. Have times where they're fighting with NPC police and sometimes losing, sometimes running away, to show the law enforcement officers armed with flamethrower dogs aren't just for show. The Pokemon devs keep using upping the stakes as a substitute for giving an actual reason to fight. Honestly it would be fairly easy if they just made the Eternatus' release a PROPHECY that effectively only Rose knew about, that it was preordained that Eternatus would awaken on that day specifically and there was no waiting because it was out of his control, or that Eternatus could only be awoken on very specific days similar to storylines based around eclipses or the alignment of the planets and that if they didn't do it then they wouldn't get another chance until it WAS too late despite how long that time was With the thing that still makes him the villain is not telling anyone about the upcoming apocalypse and being too insistent on Leon specifically catching it to boost him and no one else so he stands in your way , effectively being obsessed with pushing Leon's status as the ultimate champion as much as possible at the expense of effectively everything Abd I find it funny that people always meme about how useless the adults are in things like this but then complain when it's played straight and the adults actually try to take care of things
@aisadal2521 Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, Chairman Rose was definitely a bad, WTF villain, like, the energy crisis couldn't have waited just one more day? With how advanced the technology is, and some Dex entries talking about sustainability, you'd think that they would've had multiple blueprints/foundations to work on to deal with said energy crisis Chairman Rose really thought the world wouldn't be destroyed by an ancient evil, despite multiple historical accounts saying the world was almost destroyed by said evil 🤦♂️ There's stupid, and then there's mega stupidity 😒
@nickroberts501 Жыл бұрын
I certainly noticed quite the flaw with Chairman Rose and his obsession with the energy crisis. You know how there are some people that are stuck in the past, as if the stupidity that happened in those times is still going on? Chairman Rose...is the exact opposite of that. He's stuck in the future, as if the energy crisis is happening. Which explains his impatience, his need for results NOW and not LATER. An explanation. Not an excuse. If anything, I'd rather try to break down his ridiculous obsession with a few questions. "Is the energy crisis happening now?" "You're certain it'll happen in the future?" "Do you know how to completely fix it?" "Do you know what it entails?" From what I understand, Chairman Rose's perception is dulled because of the very IDEA of the energy crisis that will happen long after he's gone. He's stuck in the future where it's happening. ...And he doesn't know the details, he doesn't even know what it looks like.

I could easily see Rose as far more antagonsitic. like instead of having him be a good guy who's too future thinking, you do the opposite, have him be a selfish bastard who only wants popularity, fame and wealth and abuses Eternatus to gain and maintain that power as he relies on him to make the gym matches more fun and in turn get his company more money through tourism and such via the draw of the gym battles and pokemon league, not even thinking about the effect Eternatus' power will have in the long run. Sure it takes away the uniqueness of him being a good guy who acts as our big bad, and takes away the duality of him and leon who lives in the moment, but still I feel this would make for a better VILLAIN, and certainly give you more reason to wanna oppose him. Oleana could even be motivaed to act as the one covering up his misdeeds out of her loyalty andd love to him.

The biggest issue with Chairman Rose honestly comes down to how incredibly rushed the Darkest Day storyline is. It's essentially a 20 minute main quest that tries to cram a whole game's worth of plot into that timeframe -- Even the fact that the very first time you learn of Eternatus in game is right before the encounter with Rose. If the story was paced better and elements of the Darkest Day plot was seeded in different parts of the game other than practically the very ending, he really could've ended up being one of the better Pokemon villains in the series, since his arc has so many good elements of that "Right but in the wrong way" character

With Akechi, I think Royal's conclusion for him would have been better had it been more final for him. He dies in Shido's palace after seeking his approval, and finally after being brought back by Maruki he gets his chance to demonstrate to the cast that he's actually learned that he doesn't need anyone's approval but his own by going against Maruki and choosing for the world to go on as normal, even at the cost of his own life. Going out on his own terms. The teaser of him being alive does detract from that.

Goro Akechi is definitely a miss for me as a antagonist. The problem I have with him is that there really isn't much interaction with him. The only flaw with Mephiles is the game he's in. Otherwise, he's basically everything Infinite _should_ have been. An immense threat whenever he appears, able to read and manipulate those around him to further his own goals, and his first direct interaction with Sonic, the cornerstone of his entire plan, is to just shoot him, taking the direct approach when trying to manipulate Silver into doing it failed miserably. Eggman is the tacked-on villain in that game, since even _Bowser_ would call out the generic "save the princess!" storyline in Sonic's campaign.
@jaretco6423 Жыл бұрын
The problem with Mephiles is that he's an absolute idiot. Why couldn't go back to an time where he & Iblis were separated and rejoin him there to become Solaris again😅? Why does he have to wait till now to finally join him? This guy can travel through time. But he waited over 200 years to rely an stupid silver hedgehog to travel back to time and kill Sonic so he can make Elise and releasing Iblis? Even than, Silver failed twice. And than he started to kill Sonic after saving Elise for the 5th time and now Iblis is finally released & became Solaris now? Elise barely knew Sonic and she started crying for him after; what? Why Pokemon decided 1000 years was a good one is beyond me. It makes Rose look like an impatient whiney baby who can't wait like half a day to get Leon's full attention after the battle. Hell, they could've even play into the long time frame. Have Rose be scared that even if it's a couple centuries off, he doesn't know when the point of no return is and that Leon shrugging off the crisis could snowball into being a constant issue of him valuing other things more than Galar's future. If Vanny would have been shown in some cutscenes between your adventure, maybe instead of only focusing on Gregory but also on Vanessa and Vanny, she could have been portrayed a lot better with her slowly losing her mind to Afton and becoming Vanny fully. To where at the end, instead of facing of against 1, you need to look out of all the cleaning robots being tuend to Vanny illusions and makes the ending area a challenge to get through of. Akechi could have been fixed aswell, just unsure how to do it best myself. Rose should have been shown that instead of simply wanting to use Eternatus for power, he had already began using many other Pokemon aswell, draining them off all their life and killing them. As once you find that out, he explains he was right about it ending in a thousand years. Yet that was with the Pokemon he used as juice, and after freeing those, the time left went down from thousand of years to hours left. Making him more of a villain, yet also making it make sense why he was so willing to do it then. The RE4 Remake should have kept most of the interactions from the original, letting it keep the same tone, yet give the player the option to turn them off or ignore them to give it a serious tone still. Aka 2 versions to experience the story. And finally, Infinite...He has no easy fix, but Imma try. Have Eggman trick him, into thinking Shadow was Sonic, Infinite and the Avatar being friends before he turned to Eggman's side, have Infinite slowly over the course of the game find out the truth behind Eggman's lies, and end the game by having Infinite figure out the truth of Shadow beating him up, yet Sonic protecting Shadow, and swear war on all of Team Sonic aswell, using all the might of the Phantom Ruby to turn the fight to a mind fuck scenario where you won't know what is real and fake

I wonder why more games don't use the Megaman X1 method of showcasing a villain of a threat. By that, I mean that how Vile defeats the player in battle (rather than in a cutscene) and escapes. It gives the player the initial impression that they have a fighting chance because enemies don't have health bars in X1 so you don't realise that he's actually invulnerable. As you keep shooting him, you realise that he can take more punishment than the helicopter minibosses and everything else you've fought in the level. All while he continues to drain your health by his attacks (granted, you can't avoid them because there's no platforms and you have no double jump) until you're low enough for him to paralyze X and attempt a capture.

Where hes a thorn in the teams side that tries everything he can to figure out who is apart of the Phantom Thieves. I already got spoiled he'd be playable so I assumed all this was leading up to him going back on the BS he spewed on TV about the Phantom Thieves being anti-justice and seeing their side. So when he turned out to be the killer of Haru's Dad it took me by surprise and worked a lot as a paraellel to the player since it shows just how badly revenge can taint a person. We both want revenge but Akechi is the only one actively hurting people to get it. I think Akechi is great and actually became hard to predict his twist by having a similar thing as Makoto. You know, when it comes to Akechi, I never saw his villain reveal as the plot twist. To me, the true plot twist was that the Phantom Thieves saw this turn coming from the word go. Or… I guess the word “pancakes” would be more accurate. When it comes to SwSh, honestly I felt that game… didn’t really need a villain. The story was about the gym challenge, something Galar did very well. I never had a Pokémon game have the Gym Challenge feel so important before. But, if we needed a villain, you are right in saying the best way to describe Rose would be “wasted potential”. Maybe if the crisis was taking place in 10 or maybe even 50 years, Rose’s urgency would have been more sound. Heck, I can envision a version of SwSh where Rose is an antagonist, but not a villain, you know? He is just trying to do his best to save the region he genuinely cares for, and is frustrated that no one wants to help him save this place. Also, I know that the DLC came later, but Regieleki is right there. Rose’s problems would have been solved without having to awaken an Eldridge horror.

This sounds pretty far fetched, but the story of Sonic Forces could've been the best Sonic story game wise at the time. But of course it was handled so poorly no could take the plot points seriously, especially when the characters don't reflect on what's stated. For example previously stated how much power Infinite had, if it was shown everytime how much he can change the landscapes where us the player are going through and we have to clutch our way to win almost every time. That claim would actually hold weight. Another example of this was "Sonic is being tortured by Eggman nonstop after his capture." Sonic: *Making wise cracking jokes like any other day Me: "How is Sonic being tortured? Maybe from boredom, but nothing physical or psychological. " Yeah at that point, I just felt lied to by the game every step of the way. (Love how the writer for Frontiers acknowledged that shitty portrayal of Tails and made it work on how he still has a long way to go for how inconsistent he is when it comes to bravery. A decent writer would've retcon that moment and that will be fine with me. So I give even more credit to actually still addressing it so everyone won't be so decisive of the storyline as a whole.)

What I like is that in Pokémon Masters EX, they highlight Rose’s talents as a philanthropist businessman to manipulate the population against the prince of the region. In this storyline, this Rose hasn’t enacted his plan in Galar yet so he’s confused about everyone’s shock and claiming that he was arrested. Giovanni approaches Rose, who wants to use the region’s gimmick as an energy source, and tells Rose that he can him with all the research material he needs to show the public the energy uses of said gimmick. With this, Rose hosts a public event to demonstrate his power and tells the people the prince is keeping this away from them and monopolizing this potential for himself. Sure Rose means well, but he’s a businessman, he will take actions that go to his benefit, even if they are morally questionable. Just as long as they would help the energy crisis in a 1000 years. I am not defending Sword and Shield. That story would’ve been so much more believable in your version. Pokémon Masters EX just has pretty good writing for “what if” continuation stories that take place after the mainline games.

He had some good things going on for his story initially, and was a legitimate threat on par with what we'd faced thus far, and his arc was wrapped up succinctly. However, he was brought back after a few years because the devs had already had us kill the Sith Emporer 3 or 4 times by then. As antagonists go, one can argue that you kind of jump the shark with an immortal parasite with an arguably justifiable god complex, so bringing back a seditionist feels inadequate.

If we want to talk disappointing villains, I'm gonna mention the Ratchet & Clank reboot, as well as Rift Apart. The reboot that was based on the first game had *such a low bar* to clear with Chairman Drek. He wasn't a deep or complicated character, he was a business mogul pretending he needed to rip apart other planets to build his people a new home, when the real reason was his idea for an infinite bolts cheat. And yet, somehow, the reboot just made him even weaker. I don't even remember if he gave a motivation for what he was doing, but a little more than halfway through the game, he gets offed by Dr. Nefarious...who is *equally* disappointing compared to his original debut in UYA. Instead of being a mad scientist who made himself into a robot in a quest for revenge against Captain Qwark...he's apparently *just* a robot who at one point was in the Galactic Rangers? Details fuzzy, but it's hard to remember the flavor of watered-down La Croix too. Rift Apart was less of a disappointment, but we really don't get enough interaction with the villains. We get a few nebulous broadcasts about Dr. Nefarious trying to hunt down Ratchet and Rivet, then the Emperor shows up for a chat and leaves with him...and then he mostly just kinda exists in the periphery, only showing up for dramatic scenes. We hardly get to see the Emperor Nefarious, so there's not a lot of buildup before it goes to the final fight. And of course, this version of Dr. Nefarious is still the one from the reboot (no one is going to convince me otherwise) and he doesn't have Lawrence backing up his humor. Granted, I can't be mad at Lawrence for that, the VA was actually on leave.

9:51 I would be down for Lysandre and Rose to be mocked in a future Pokemon game. Like have them mentioned in passing by an NPC who makes fun of them Also I do love the idea of how you want to fix Rose I would love to see the Deadly Six and Infinite reappear but either are the butt of any joke whenever they appear, going through misfortune like Infinite losing the Phantom Ruby and is out of practice or the Deadly Six not being taken seriously 23:26 I think Akechi would be offended by you comparing him to to Infinite

When I was coming up with my own Pokemon region that would be Southwest of Unova, I thought of a post game where Peony, Rose, Oleana, and maybe Peony's daughter arrive in Castelia City on Vacation, where we get more backstory of Rose and see him and Peony become better brothers, Oleana could even get more development too.

Vanny was just a pawn in someone else’s plan. We know from in-game emails and tape recordings that someone higher up at FazBear Entertainment was manipulating Vanessa.

Honestly there were no real villains in Pokémon Sword & Shield. Team Yell were just overwhelmingly obsessed fans of Marnie and her brother Piers and Chairman Rose had a power project that he should not have activated without more in depth research.

14:30 I agree. Especially if you look at the manga, because there are so many interesting villains and characters. For example one villain lost his pokemon in the past, and the grief of this drove him to begin seeing others as expendable. And so he controls the evil team and do horrible deeds in his search for Celebi, to change the past. Or one, who infiltrated the news stations, so that the deeds of his team are not widespread known.

Good list, man. I already can't wait to see how you do a "Terrible Heroes" list (My recommendation is Mist Rex from Super Robot Wars K. Here's some samples: "Yes, things like these (persecution and discrimination) exist on every planet. I've had this kind of experience too. But right now, it's nothing to worry about. Not important." [used to console somebody else whose sister nearly died from discrimination], "Indeed, if we intervene, we can stop the conflict for now, but doing this wouldn't resolve the underlying problem, would it?" [said while people are being massacred and his group is en route to rescue them], "I've also been defeated two times in a row!" [referring to the destruction of his homeworlds]) Still, as for Sonic Forces and Infinite, I can't wait to see how the chaps at SnapCube set him to rights. After all, they've made Mephiles/Memphis Tennesse and Black Doom/The Devil much more fun.
@Bysthedragon Жыл бұрын
I think Mephiles was a really good villain, but the game around him was bad. Mephiles is a fragment of a God who has sworn vengeance against the world for breaking him into pieces and needs to unite with the half that has his power in order to do so, but Mephiles is in no rush to get anywhere fast. He could have completed his master plan at any time during the game just by killing Sonic himself which he ends up doing later, but first he wants to make people suffer just because he enjoys it. He tricks Silver into thinking he needs to kill Sonic in order to save the future because making a pure hearted hero like Silver kill the wrong person and watch the future he tried to escape happen because of his own actions is tragic and he loves it! He shows Shadow himself caged up in the future to tempt Shadow back to the darkside because he wants to see Shadow to go on a vengeance fueled rampage against the world and justify their fears which leads to him being imprisoned in the first place. Biggest missed opportunity is that Sonic never interacts with Mephiles or has any kind of dynamic with him. He doesn't even know the guy exists until Mephiles appears out of nowhere and shoots Sonic in the back like a punk. I want to see how he tries to tempt Sonic because Sonic is not beyond doing the wrong thing for a good reason like Silver, and would do anything if it meant protecting his friends.
@rustyshackelford4224 Жыл бұрын
Sonic was pretty much irrelevant throughout the entirety of Sonic 06. Mephiles was overrall a solid villain and a huge successful troll, but it sucks that all of the deeds that he's committed have been entirely deleted from the timeline and he himself entirely has been rendered moot by Sonic 06's ending which resets everything, and he know longer technically existes anymore.

Other villains who I think are failures: -Tsukasa Shiba (Gundam Build Divers) - Was basically a hardcore gamer who thought newer version of the game he enjoyed is inferior because it wasn't a 'git gud, scrub' scenario. So rather than letting others enjoy what they enjoy, he decides to ruin everything for them because he doesn't believe they truly like the game. -Chairman Mashita (Gundam Build Fighters) - All he had to do was lay low and do nothing. Instead, he decided to risk everything and potentially exposing himself because he was afraid a 14 year old boy would find out who he was (a former thief)... even though the boy had no idea he even existed. -Zigfried von Schroeder (Yu-Gi-Oh!) - Wanted to ruin Kaiba because he was one step ahead in hologram technology for a card game. Rather than bring the thing to court and show he had the idea first, or sabotage Kaiba's company by other means, decides to sabotage a tournament Kaiba was hosting..... -Ultimecia (Final Fantasy VIII) - Wants to destroy the world because...... We're never given a reason as to why she wants to do it. -Galenth Dysley/Barthandelus (Final Fantasy XIII) - Wants to commit omnicide, which means killing himself in the process, in order for he and his kind to meet their creator...... But his kind aren't even sure if it'll work. -Embryo (Cross Ange) - Is an all powerful immortal being who can control people and end worlds, wanted nothing but peace..... and he uses his powers to try to get a 16 year old girl to fall in love with him, and causes conflict..... He's an idiot. -Seymour (Final Fantasy X) - Wants to end the world because he doesn't want people to suffer........ He's an idiot. Oh, and he always gets beaten. -Caius (Final Fantasy XIII-2) - Wants to destroy the world and change time because he doesn't want the girl he protects to die whenever someone changes history....... He's an idiot. -Count Saazbaum (Aldnoah Zero) - Hates the royal family of Mars and blames them for the death of his wife.... Plots revenge against the people of Earth instead who had nothing to do with the death of his wife..... He's an idiot.

I view Royal's ending with Akechi as Joker/Ren/Akira still wanting to believe Akechi could still be alive. Because Joker and Akechi had a actual bond in Royal in my opinion.
@BabyGirlTiny Жыл бұрын
They didn’t. Their bond is the same as what it was in the original game. Except it makes even less sense

@@BabyGirlTiny no because in the original the social link progressed without Joker's input. But in Royal you have to go out of your way to see Akechi to advance his SL. Plus I meant as more of actual rivals and not really friends.

I feel like if they just explained what the phantom Ruby was and why Infinite needed it, like a life source or something, and why he wants to destroy Sonic he could’ve been done well instead of just being said as “created by Eggman” when in the comics he’s shown to be a jackal who got his squad wiped out by Shadow, but they introduced that late in the comics a year after the game came out, showing they never planned anything with Infinite and made things up as it went along. There’s legit no origin for the Phantom Ruby which really sucks considering it’s powers and abilities. Plus Infinite isn’t shown to be “the most powerful villain of all time” like Sonic Team states, you easily beat his ass multiple times with not only the rookie, who is untrained and weaker than fucking Tails, but gets easily beaten by Base Sonic, and all that is needed is a determined Base Sonic and the rookie to kill him, he only gets a win on Sonic when he jumps him with others. Other Sonic villains like Metal Madness requires the entire Sonic cast to defeat and when he grew to his next form, Metal Overlord, not just Super Sonic was needed, but Super Tails and Super Knuckles. They needed Super Sonic, Super Silver and Super Shadow to defeat Solaris, who was literally eating dimensions and destroying everything. But we don’t need a Super form to beat Infinite. You’re seriously telling me Infinite is stronger than Metal Overlord? Nuh uh, I don’t believe it

Doesnt help Sega double down on the concept as well,. and with Mania's success, Sega and their genius plans and ideas, also wanted Forces to have connections with Mania, to then forcing literal hard labor on the devs to release the game within 6 months in time, after they worked on the lighting engine for three years...yeah no offense to them but Sega of Japan can be idiots.

It sucks that we learn in the book Vanny isn't really the real villain. And William Afton controlling her in her head isn't the real William Afton. It's an unstable AI program called the mimics one that learns about William Afton from the Help Wanted game that was trapped in.
