My great grandfather fought for Canada in both World Wars and his older brother was gassed bad by Chlorine and shot as he spent most his time in Ypres. He passed away from complications in 1919, he had bad lungs and his verve’s were shot! My great grandfather was a sweet old man, he never even swore, my grandmothers younger brother Gerald asked him once what happened to his uncle Oliver during WW1, he said, it was the only time my father ever snapped at me and told him, Oliver died a horrible death and never bring him and the Wars up again! My grandfather fought with the 1st Canadian Division, as grandchildren we were taught never talk about it! Eventually when my grandfather was older and I became extremely close to him, he started to open up, I even went and toured places he fought in 2005 with him before he passed, he couldn’t enter a town in Holland cause he had fought there, he told me the story of why and we did not go into the town and I understood why he didn’t like to talk about it! He was 17 when he went overseas and admitted that they killed German prisoners, he was not happy to admit it! Both these wars were brutal on all sides, not just the Canadians, the Canadians were just better at it, the Germans did their best as well!

There's many different reasons why canadians were like that in trench warfare. There's the story of a Canadian soldier being crucified by the Germans. Our home in canada was relatively quiet and peaceful until the war disrupted it all as Canada is apart of the British Commonwealth. Canadian troops showed little to no mercy to those they saw as the instigators to the war, canadian troops held the trenches more often then the british or french. We used gas attacks as often as we could, notoriously known for constant trench raiding, and due to food supply shortages they saw no need to capture prisoners or to help enemy wounded.

When I got older and research the actual evidential history of canadians in wartime. I realized we are literally If one of the major contributors to the concept of the war crimes convention of geneva. The others including vietnam and also poland. Because you see we are very nice people until we decide that you are a bad person and then we decide to stop giving the courtesy that we give every other person. Because we stop treating you as a human. In fact, such behavior associating with the enemy is considered to be traitorous towards most Canadians even to.

So you were literally fighting side by side with your brothers, neighbors, and friends that you grew up with. They watched their loved one's die beside them. That's why they did what they did to the Germans. The Canadian military fucked up on that part.
