I'm loving the mermaid videos. I am descended from Angolan people, and there's a belief in Kianda, the goddess of the waters and fishermen who takes the form of a breathtaking mermaid. She is usually nice but is said to punish whole villages by submerging them underwater if the people piss her off. There is also Angolan stories of various mermaids even driving people to madness, especially if the person commits a taboo. And speaking of water spirits, in one tale a man was so angry that his brother had died that he went to confront the deity of the underwater underworld(Kalunga), Kalunga-Nbome. After Kalunga explains to him that he doesn't cause death, only accepts the dead in his care, he allows him to see his brother. His brother doesn't return to the land of the living with him because he's much happier in the realm of the dead. The man, upon returning to his home received a message that the God of the dead would come in 12 days to collect his soul. Terrified he tries to run but Kalunga-Nbome catches up to him, throws an axe towards him, transforming him into a water spirit before returning him to the land of the dead permanently. Damn lol

I knew a little boy that literally thought he was a merman. He always had a deep connection with bodies of water. He was a natural born swimmer at a very young age. He always told us the dreams he had about merpeople living in cities under water. Looking back he probably has a friendly (almost family like) connection with mermaids that he was born with. Or he might have mermaid ancestry.

Also no clue about why Starbucks choose Melusine or Melusina as their image but she is allegedly an ancestor of King Henry the VIII, Queen Mary Tudor And Queen Elizabeth I. Allegedly, King Henry's great grandmother Jaquetta Woodville who birthed his grandmother and mother (both named Elizabeth) was supposed to be a notorious witch and descendant of Melusine. She frequently gave tarot readings (allegedly) and predicted the ascension of her daughter to the English throne, the fall of Queen Margaret d'Anjou and many other battles and royal lines. Her family insignia was a mermaid and she was questioned on witchcraft and nearly imprisoned in her youth. Her being the descendant of the mermaind Melusine was used as actual evidence. Luckily for her she was found not guilty. When Jacquetta married her 2nd husband he was common born but was allowed a peerage and title since she was noble born. This meant they would have to choose a name since he wasn't born with a noble one. They choose the name "Rivers", becoming the Baron Rivers and Lady Jacquetta Rivers. Jacquetta Woodville managed to have 14 live children in Mideval England. Only one child died at 8. The rest lived to adulthood. This was strange within itself. Her daughter had 11 healthy pregnancies and births. Also strange for those times. This amazing fertility was also a reason they were believed to be witches descended from a mermaid. That's my nerd TED talk ✌🏾

In Portugal we have the Tágides, which are water nymphs of the Tagus (Tejo) river. They are the ones Camões asks for inspiration to, when writing a very famous book called Lusíadas. Also, we have what we call "mulher marinha" (marine woman) in our legends, which is kinda like a mermaid, but with goat feet (don't ask me how that works, I'm yet to see illustrations, but it's a thing). She is described as being beautiful from the waist up, but having goat ears and feet. The legs would have fins on them and also be covered in scales.

There are so many corporations that use god names, like Nike. Once you know about symbolisms & sigils, you start seeing it everywhere. I'm 1st generation Korean. I'm a 1/4 German & Irish, but grew up traditionally Korean. I remember the little mermaid version that was read to me wasn't so nice. Idk where it originated, but this was the version that was read to me & it was translated into Korean. There's the 3 sisters that make a deal w/like an "Ursula" I think they all had to make a sacrifice by cutting off their long beautiful luxurious (I just noticed that the word Lux, Light is in the this word, going to have to check out the etymology on luxurious). Anyway, the "witch" gives the sisters a knife to do so. After they cut off their hair they're told to give the knife to their sister and she must kill the woman that the prince had just married if she wants to be w/him. Her voice would also come back once she kills the wife. She's in their room & is by their bed watching them sleep. She contemplates on killing her, but just can't get herself to do it out of the love for him. The honeymoon is on a ship, where they're going, Idk. Since she couldn't go through w/it, her other choice is to come back to the ocean if she doesn't want to die or get stuck being a mute for the rest of her life. But, when she dives into the ocean, she turns into bubbles & that was the end of it. Idk if she knew she would turn into bubbles if she didn't do her part or not. This was a long time ago, so I might've gotten exactly how it goes, but that's the gist of it. What I get out of it now is, be careful what you wish for & if you're not going to do your part of the deal, don't make a deal!

There are a couple notable legends from Poland about mermaids. Like Russians, Poles also have legends about the Rusalki, but these are not as terrifying lol. The coat of arms for the capital city of Warsaw is a mermaid with a shield. There's a story about fishermen & their nets, and the mermaid started to free the fish. The more interesting tale is about the origins of amber. Queen Jurata (Yoo-rah-tuh) of the Baltic Sea lived in a palace underwater made of amber. She is sometimes described as a goddess and sometimes as a mermaid (I say, why not both?). Jurata fell in love with a mortal fisherman which pissed off the god of thunder, Perun/Perunkas. He used his lightning to destroy her amber castle, which is why amber washes up on the shores of the Baltic sea.

İ am from North Caucasus(Circassia) and here we have legends about there is whole another world under the water like a big marine kingdom, shockingly beautiful immortal merpeople lives there, they have wealth and abundance but no human can go there unless they take you. There are stories like merpeople kidnap earthpeople to marry them, have kids and bond forever etc. Or they can take you to be a servant. also there are also other spirits w actual physical(female) bodies lives in the river. They know all the names and call each men by their names. They are alluring beautiful. They invite men they like to fight 1vs1, if men can beat them, they let them live and have seggs w them. But after seggs men lose their minds and go straight mad. Women go to river to do offering and calm those water spirits (the offering is chicken eggs i dont know why but they like eggs). They dont harm women actually they help and protect women in need because of some sisterly bind.
