In the 1980s I was given spiritual guidance by a young Salvation Army soldier, now a prominent leader in the dwindling church. He advised me that membership was exclusive. Only those to whom God had directly spoken were entitled to join. This was prior to the existence of the internet and therefore before the advent of social media. Contemporary methods of communication were letter, telephone and telegram. Given that I had yet to receive an invitation via any of those methods I was unqualified to attend any meetings. I questioned the validity of the joining criteria. His response was that God had spoken to him directly permitting his application for membership. As the popularity of Christianity is on the decline, I wonder if the Salvation Army retain this clause?
