This is a very helpful presentation. It takes me back to grad school in the early 80s where I learned for the first time that Adventists who are vegetarians live about 10 years longer than the general population in the U.S. It was a complete shock to me that vegetarians live so much longer, as I had never heard that in school or as a biology major undergrad. The whole idea of eating plants only was foreign because our country always had stressed meat and eggs for protein. I did not know how to apply that insight to my life as a young person in my 20s. But it stuck in my mind and led me to try to cut down on my overall meat consumption. This was brought up in a class in the Yale School of Public Health, which included one professor who advocated dark green leafy vegetables as some of the most important groups to promote health, which I never forgot. I am now plant based only, as I finally understand the medical research that shows this is more healthful. Importantly, it avoids more damage to the natural spaces where native species live because we do not need to use up so much land to feed our beef, hogs, and chicken. I am grateful for the excellent research discussed by Dr. Butler, an outstanding Bruin alumnus!

Thanks a lot. 25:50 that graph is really pretty accurate for VEGANs. Indeed I really super love avocados. I also eat handfuls of dried fruits as snacks each day. Berries are very expensive here, but I try my best to include them. Citrus a lot, 5 pounds each week. Sorry I would like to eat more green leafy vegetables, but really due to all sorts of reasons combined, end up not eating enough. God bless!

Is lifespan data published yet? If so, can you give us a timestamp in this talk? This isn't starting out great. There's very clearly nothing besides not smoking. Modern Australians (not a health conscious group) live almost exactly as long as health conscious AHS-1 vegetarians and vegans. It's because they don't smoke anymore. Diet doesn't matter.

Healthspan is what matters most. Meat eaters on way more drugs the last 1/3 of life vs vegans.

@@intheflesh Reread. If all things are equal diet DOES matter.
Is the vegetarian diet automatically the healthiest way to eat?
