Terry Crist | Hillsong Church Phoenix quits Hillsong and roasts the Hillsong Board and leadership

On Sunday 27th March, the Senior Pastor of Hillsong Phoenix Terry Crist sensationally announced they were quitting their affiliation with Hillsong. It followed the mounting scandals plaguing the Australian-founded $100M entertainment and media corporate empire loosely trading as a network of churches.
Embarrassingly, this follows Crist announcing in March 2016 that the call for his church to join the Hillsong network was "the strongest word from God I've had in my life."
Like all men who confidently declare God spoke to them, manifestly Crist was gravely mistaken.
If Crist was mistaken about hearing from God here, who can tell if he can discern the voice of God from his own imagination, or the Deceiver's whisper, at any time?
In this sermon, Crist excoriates Hillsong's Australian leadership and says "I believe it is in the best interest of Hillsong Church to
conduct an internal investigation as it relates to board conduct,
to immediately restore the Sydney eldership, to make the
findings of that public, and to dismiss the board members who

The more the truth comes out about Brian Houston and the Hillsong empire/cult, the more boxes for Narcissism and sociopathy are ticked by him. HG Tudor says that one of the Narcissist's Prime Aims is character trait acquisition for the construction and maintenance of the facade. Many Narcissists are drawn to churches because there is a huge volume of vulnerable victims to exploit. They are drawn to positions of power and control (which they're addicted to), and they can hide under the guise of Christianity, being wolves in shepherd's clothing. They're also whitened sepulchres full of dead men's bones. Narcissists are opportunistic parasites, and commodify others for their own consumption. Lacking empathy, driven by entitlement, they "make merchandise of people", enriching themselves at the expense of others. We're surrounded by sociopaths and deceivers. I'm glad that Jesus knew it all along and warned us beforehand. It's validating to be able to see the gaslighting of the evil one's puppets for what it is.

Also, this trail has clearly forced him to consider what should a church look like with astounding clarity and determination. My take away: Just because things go wrong, doesn't mean God hasn't called you to it; maybe He called you to clean it up.

I fully believe in pastor Crist. I'm proud that he stood up to the mega church ... He's a very good man. I know him personally, he's been my pastor for over 10 years. Our church was appalled at the actions of the global church. Just because God spoke to him to join the church many years ago doesn't mean that this wasn't supposed to happen. God also teaches us lessons and our lives have seasons of change. Our church will grow from this and heal. I'm personally grateful that we are back to being city of grace. It was so much better when the Crists had full control. Not every person associated with Hillsong are bad people. Yet, I absolutely believe that something very dark and sinister was at play here. I also believe that Hillsong Phoenix and all 6 affiliate locations did the right thing. Terry Christ stood up and is holding those accountable.

This is so wrongly misinterpreted or misunderstood. He speaks of God calling him to open a church in Phoenix done through Hillsong at the time. Just bc Hillsong did wrong doesn’t mean God didn’t want a church planted. For example, it was God’s plan to call the nation of Israel in the Old Testament but time & time again they sinned in which He had to carry out punishment (Ex. Exile to Babylon). God can call people or churches but they may break away due to sin and in time He holds everyone accountable. The important part is what actions did this pastor take upon seeing the inappropriate approach of Hillsong pastor and leadership? They fired the head pastor but he wanted to see leadership do more internal investigations along with disclosing info to pastors so they make sure history doesn’t repeat. Instead, they were requiring NDEs and non competes to conceal info. In ministry, God calls pastors and no one can hold back a calling. You don’t require a pastor to sign a non compete or furthermore an NDA. This is insane, a very corporate mindset and obviously there’s something wrong they don’t want to correct. The pastor did right by telling them they’re wrong and to break from the church. He didn’t have to do so. He did right to depart from Hillsong upon the inappropriate actions of Hillsong leadership. Not wanting to disclose info or requiring NDEs/Non Competes to have that info is fishy and he did right to tell them they’re wrong. The church in Phoenix moves on.

I used to be apart of hillsong Phoenix 2017-2020. Thank god I got out of that church. Though I will say terry was different from other hillsong pastors. He would actually meet his congregation, not bail off stage hiding behind security after the service like the rest do. Though I still have a problem with how every message was a feel good and not the topic of sin.

I personally feel we should never say "God spoke to me" lightly. Weeks ago one pastor told me how one pastor he is closed to (n still is) where yrs also this pastor told his church to bid for a location for $XXX Million as he felt God spoke to him on that amount to bid. Yes they successfully won the bid for that location but they actually over bidded about $6M! The highest bid was much much lower. So this had me thinking, did God actually spoken to him or its just his own voice. Mind you, he is a good pastor but it had me to be careful about using God's name in vain. These days I never go around telling people I think God spoke to me to do this or that...I dont want to make that kind of mistakes. I dont know about that pastor, whether its a mistake or not. But I dont buy the "God spoke to me" easily these days.

I went to City of Grace (WOG) way before the Crists took over, but I left when they joined Hillsong because it felt icky right away. The "brand" took away almost everything that made it a community church, especially the way they handled the youth ministry. Frankly, these spiritual abuses are rampant in the megachurch complex, and even as much as we DO know, it only scratches the surface. The Church is not and should never behave like a corporation or a business, it's completely antithetical to the teachings of Jesus.

Spent 22 years at this church when it was called, Word of Grace. It was where I learned, served and healed. I left when “pastors” Terry and Judith came on board. They have a low view on the authority of scripture and must have bypassed 1 Timothy 2:12 which is clear regarding women teaching. That, and so much in the seeker sensitive, watered down gospel movement. I’m so thankful to be a part of a church that holds Jesus high and the authority of scripture as truth.

My wife and I were part of and were married at Hillsong Phoenix when it was still City of Grace. Pastor Terry Crist is NOT of the Hillsong pastors who glorifies himself and not God, is reckless with the church and those that serve the church. He made the right decision leaving the Hillsong "brand".

It is not a time-proven wisdom to invalidate a person's claim of having heard from God just because things had gone wrong along the way. There is such a thing as 'seasons' where for a season God puts us in a place/situation/church where we know that we know that we know that we heard from God that we need to be in that specific place/situation/church. Hi Glenn. I agree that God does predominantly reveal His will for our lives through the scripture. And the more we read and ask for His Spirit to impress the truth upon our hearts the more that happens. But there have been a very few instances in my life where I "heard" - definitively - the voice of God. And it was backed up or confirmed by real events. Very few times and all were for serious reasons. After that happens it is impossible to doubt or ignore His voice.

God often leads people through trials and tribulations. He never promises that it will be easy only that you must seek him for answers. Terry Crist has each week updated is on everything. The good, bad and ugly. He is very transparent and he has openly tried to hold Hillsong accountable. The second he did that he was threatened with our church. They refuse to acknowledge anything (Hillsong) and keep sweeping things under the rug. It took great courage for Pastor to stand up to Hillsong. We worry what hillsongs retribution will be for him speaking out but he had to. It was the right thing to do to let us all know about the NDA and trying to force the Crists to sign over their church (which FYI we've had this church for decades ... It was never hillsongs). Please don't judge one man on the actions of others.

The only possibility is that God was teaching him how bad this group was. I used to be a member of Fellowship Church in the DFW area (Ed Young Jr.) I strongly believed God was calling me there. But they ran me out. Did I hear wrongly? Or did God want to show me how churches in the Last Days would become? And also, to find a woman who would go through sheer hell but now lives with me, due to her poor health she would be homeless otherwise.

@@bridgetjentzsch3226 hi Bridget. Good question. And I have difficulties where to start. For one thing, Hillsong almost never preaches about sin and repentance. And therefor their message about being saved is very much watered down. They invited (among others) T.J. Jakes and Bill Johnson to preach in their church(es). Jakes is a modalist (and therefor a rank heretic). Johnson is a Word of Faith preacher who teaches another Jesus and another gospel all together. That put Johnson and Jakes outside of true Christianity. But still, Hillsong let these people teach and preach in their churches. Hillsong preaches that it is always God's will that you are healed. And if you're not healed, it your own fault because you don't have enough faith. whereas the Bible teaches something entirely different. Preachers from Hillsong take Bible verses out of context and thus give it another meaning. In other words, they twist scripture to promote their own invented doctrines. They almost never properly exegete a Bible passage. They almost always apply a technique that is called "eisegesis". In other words, they read things into a text that isn't in the text at all. And in that way they change the original Biblical meaning. I listened to numerous sermons and teachings from Brian Houston. And he never properly explained any Bible verse or passage. He makes all Bible passages he preaches on, about you and me. Instead of about Jesus Christ. They teach that tithing is something a Christian must do. But in the New Covenant, tithing is done away with by Jesus fulfilling the law. And I could go on for a while. But I think you got the point. Ummm I hear from God everyday! He speaks to me . He speaks to His sheep! God surely does and can speak to His people when they seek Him and ask Him for His direction. Glad Pastor Crist stepped away . He did the right thing. Just because this happened doesn’t mean the pastor didnt hear form God. If he says he did then he did. When God calls and chooses us leads us to places, doesn’t mean everything is going to be easy, you will face challenges, things don’t go smoothly nor perfect nor may go the way we think. It should always be shared with a caveat that "it seems to me that the Spirit is leading." It should also be open to hear (and not be defensive of) questions from other mature in the faith believers.

It is possible God did, in fact, speak loudly to Pastor Crist to join Hillsong in 2016. Just because the scandals with Hillsong happened doesn’t mean it wasn’t in God’s plan to make this a trial for everyone involved. This was a HUGE test for Pastor Crist and everyone involved to make the right choice once these scandals occurred. It shows a lot that he was willing to basically separate from a church that isn’t clearly reflecting the gospel. Luckily he protected himself in 2016 with his stipulations, and I believe that was God’s doing as well. When God tells you to do something, YOU DO IT. even if it doesn’t make sense, even if it ends up making you leave reputation fall down, even if it makes you lose money, even if it “wasted your time.” God’s plan all along was to see how City of Grace would react to everything, including all the other partnered churches under Hillsong. It seems that all pastor Crist wants is the truth, accountability, and a church that acts and reflects God’s true nature. I’m proud that City of Grace has God as the priority and not their affiliation to a franchise. But just as importantly, I think that everyone should pray for those who sinned under their involvement with Hillsong. Those who did wrong doing should not be kicked to the curve from ever being loved again, but encouraged to repent and use their testimony to help the weak suffering through similar situations. In other words, pray for Hillsong to be closer to God in the midst of all the shady stuff going on, but also, Proud of you City of Grace! I’ll miss the church being part of Hillsong but I overall agree this was the best choice right now.

I have no sympathy for either Hillsong or its leadership. You'd think "men(or women)of God" would have a conscience, self-discipline and a real concern about their flocks and what kind of image they are presenting to outsiders. Apparently not. He wasn't torn. Also this is about 5 minutes of an hour and a half sermon. The full sermon can be found at city of graces KZbin page. Pastor Terry went all in on this and he is willing to take any retribution that comes his way from Hillsong. He and Judith are good people. I feel like they've wanted out for awhile to be honest (Hillsong would take the tithes, and never disclose what it was used for). The Crist started their churches in their living room 30 years ago. Everything you see is the original church they built city if grace. Hillsong was a brand they aligned with to bring more opportunity and conferences. However, when this all broke Terry immediately addressed and reflected and our entire church fasted for 45 days praying on this. We majorly voted to leave Hillsong.

God Bless You, you set a Godly example. You were planted to expose and be a voice of God. Hillsong culture was always contaminated but God had a beautiful window to shine in the music, especially in recent years. To be honest I believe the purity of worship shook the contamination and God is exposing and putting His Church in order. I was in the room when Brian announced planting Hillsong in the early 80's. I could never be apart of the movement but I witnessed much for many years. When the children raped by Brian's father were never protected but persecuted and lies covering up the truth was fed to the church members then God will purge the sin out of man's hearts who allow this. Not just Brian but his buddies who invented all manner of stories to hide the truth and follow the $$

@@sharonshoop495 I grew up Baptist, but I worked as a teacher in a Christian school at an assembly of God church for a few years. It had the most unChristian administration I've ever known. It gave me the most uneasy feeling every day. Their contract was totally illegal and would've never held up in court. I've heard several stories of abuse. One was even written in a book called "Recovering from churches that abuse". I'm so thankful I grew up in the church I did. Money and power have ruined so many people.

Im from Sydney Australia. I have always felt something is not right with Brian's spirit a spirit of pride. Pride comes before a fall. I'm a nobody yet discerned something was wrong. What is more worrying is the pastors around the world got caught up in a spirit of pride and there discernment teams and prophets did not sence this. Maybe it's time for these pastors to spend more time in prayer and fasting away from their churches as when you're on the outside you can see what is going on in the inside of your church.
