I think the 1985 version of Donald KO's Norris. Curry is my all time favorite fighter and I like Terry as well. But the Curry who knocked out McCrory was one of the finest fighters ever!

Even though Mugabi was a champion. He was not anywhere near the fighter who fought Marvin Hagler. He beat a weak champion from France to win the title. Curry had previously knocked out by Michael Nunn in his last fight. No disrespect to Norris who was an excellent fighter but he would have had his hands full with a prime Mugabi or Curry.

Currys Rise was meteoric his fall was just as meteoric - inside 10 months between sept 86 and july 87 - the upset to Honeyghan and the KO by McCallum - Curry was finished - from being touted as best P4P fighter on the planet to damaged goods - a truly incredible decline

No one needed commentators or media sway to forecast that Curry should absolutely win. You didn't bet on Honeyghan, did you? So you wanna pop up 35 years after the fact making it like it was easy to see, but no one really saw it coming. Lloyd did and that's how huge upsets happen. But first of all, there is a such thing as an upset so I don't know what you're talking about. And this fight fulfilled every part of the definition. No one was picking the Honeyman. Curry showed up all skeletal and looking like a shadow of the guy who was tearing the division apart. The result registered shock in the boxing world. What makes an upset if that isn't one?

Hard hard fight for Curry. Curry's style was just right for Norrris. Curry kept coming in and as he did Norris was just teeing off with upercuts, body shots and head shots. All credit to Curry though for coming forward on a KO monster like Norris and making it a classic slugfest!

Curry's investment is hoping to turn the fight with one big punch. It's based on the Julian Jackson fight and the notion that Norris does not have a great chin.. Curry is not Julian Jackson. Nobody is. He just could not badly hurt Norris.

Don't think it was a plan as such. The old Curry was a consistent fighter, would throw plenty of hard, accurate, fast punches. His workrate was not there anymore, in this fight. Could fight for intensity for short bursts, but could not sustain it. You can hear his corner urging him to do so all through the fight, but he couldn't do it.

It was borderline tbh. Norris was very fast and was always tempted to chance one more shot, which cost him a few times. I think Curry's knees are just touching the canvas as Norris lands the final blow, so not a DQ for me. Don was done anyway. Even if he'd survived the round Norris would have overwhelmed him in the next.

Terry Norris, one of my favorite fighters, had over 300 amateur fights. When i started boxing in National City, i saw Terry spar at times. He sparred too much. Sometimes every other day, and everyday over eight rounds. That’s waaay too much.

Bryon Watkins for the amateurs its okay but for a pro who already had so many amateur fights yea it was too much at that later point in his career, fighters like that should only spar when they have a fight scheduled and do less rounds of the actual hard sparring.

@@Omar-if1cu the brain, sloshing around in the skull can't differentiate between a punch delivered in sparring or in an actual fight. I know when I boxed after hard sparring sessions I could hear a popping sound in my head when I leaned my head back. I'm sure in a relatively short 4 year amateur career I sustained a bit of damage. Given that brain tissue does not regenerate it's a risky proposition to say the least as it may hinder one from certain forms employment after boxing is done. I met old amateur boxers that were walking on their heals, with hesitant slurred speech.

I used to go to their squadron and spar because they brought in all amateurs from the area in during the late eighties to go against Terry and his brother. I went to my prom with a huge knot on my forehead that Orlin gave me. But after just running into them a few times since, I bumped into Terry like five years ago. I was with another guy who used to box there. And despite his speech being slurred and all that, the man is still sharp because he recognized us both instantly and was super friendly like he was meeting old friends. Made us feel really good.

Yeah, no doctor so amateur armchair stuff from me, but I'd say that the part of Norris's brain that's been damaged is motor skills concerning speech, which is slurred badly. But off of video he is coherent, so there's nothing wrong with his memory or reasoning ability. He and his wife run a fitness business and he still looks in fighting shape. Like almost every fighter he should have quit a while before he did. He looked shot when he lost his title to Keith Mullings, but fought 2 more times (both losses). No doubt his all-action style caught up with him, plus the brutal sparring that went on in his training camp.

At this point, my pal and I were in our mid-forties, having last spent time with Terry just out of high school. And literally, his recognition was instant. And unlike us, he had a lot of memories to hold on to and still, his recall was instantaneous. He always would forgo his skills for his need to bang it out. He became a do-or-die slugger when he coulda taken more of a Mayweather route with his skills. And by the time he fought Mullings, his legs didn't look right. Then I had to suffer through him losing to Rosenblatt and that one French 154-pounder whose name escapes me, though he was actually pretty decent. Putani? I forget. Anyway, good talkin to you man.

I think The Honeyghan fight Messed Don Curry up and they should never have took that fight at Welterweight, He was struggling to make the welterweight limit and should have gone straight up to Light Middleweight, They underestimated Honeyghan who was on the up and unbeaten at the time it’s a shame cos he really could have gone on to even greater thing’s but I don’t think he ever got over that Loss and getting KOed by Mike McCallum , He was one of my Favourite Fighters back then and a fine sportsman , As for Norris he was a very very Dangerous and Clever fighter and Very Durable, and been in with the Best of his era ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tyson became youngest Heavyweight Champion at age 20, won 3 titles and became undisputed heavyweight champion from 1985 to 1992. .. He went to prison in 1992 and his record was 42 - 1 . He did 3 years of prison which did diminish his boxing skills, but after 3 years of prison he still managed to win and recapture the WBA HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP against Frank Bruno in 1996, then he won another IBF HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP against BRUCE SELDON . He didn't have enough prime ability to beat the HOLYFEILDs and Lewis' s after 3 years of prison, but he still beat some tough top contenders after prison such as BUSTER MATHIS, CLIFFORD ETIENNE, BRIAN NEILSON, JULIUS FRANCIS, LOU SAVERESE, BRUCE SELDON , FRANK BRUNO & ANDREW GOLOTA............. So in a 20 year career, Youngest Heavyweight Champion, Undisputed Heavyweight champion, Destroyed hall of fame great MICHAEL SPINKS , 2 Time Heavyweight Champion after 3 years of Prison, and his record was 50 - 6 with 44 KO's.......... I would say that's pretty much LONGEVITY

Norris? He was always disliked by the boxing press, for some reason. Think it was his habit of issuing challenges to smaller fighter yet never considering a move up to middlewight himself. Since Norris always made 154 easily I always thought that was a harsh take. Always came off as a real nice guy and is the same in retirement from what I can tell.

Good fight. Curry was really gassed later in the fight, almost like he maybe had some underlying cardio issue where he just didn't have the endurance. He looks like he's in good shape, it's not like he's all fat and slow, but if your legs give out around the 6th or 7th round, you're not going to make it far.

It's hard to tell if Terry hit Donald while he was down. I'm sure the ref saw it. If he did hit him while he was down, I would have given Terry his third DQ loss--all for hitting guys while they were down. It's funny. While they were standing up, Donald was the one fighting dirty.

I remember reading the Daily Mirror (UK newspaper) preview beforehand and the gist was this: that Curry was a mile above Honeyghan, who was considered a strictly European level fighter and would be outclassed in 6 rounds. Whereas I thought that was a harsh assessment, I'd watched a lot of Honeyghan's fights on the way up and he'd shown nothing to suggest he would give Curry any trouble at all. Fact is, Curry who was as a sharp and fast a fighter as you'll ever see (don't know who you were watching!) had none of that against Honeyghan. Lloyd was a reflexes fighter and the Curry we'd seen up to that point (and the Mccallum fight, actually) nails him, under normal circumstances. Unfortunely for Don, he fought like he'd just run 10 miles in a plastic suit and spent an hour in a sauna beforehand (which, considering the insane amount of weight he had to drop to make the 147 pound limit, may not be too far from what happened). Zero snap, speed, sluggish reflexes, absolutley nothing that were his usual standout qualities. Anyway, I know Lloyd bet on himself to win that fight, so I hope you did likewise. I think your reasoning was about as far off the mark as is possible for anyone who actually watched boxing in the mid-80s, but a broken clock is right twice per day, I guess 😅

There were remnants of the class of Donald Curry but he was diminished even from the guy who fought Nunn....the Light Middle Curry of 1987 would have decisioned Terry Norris...the 1985 version would have knocked Terry out...dont get me wrong Terry is a great legend and he was champion for almost a decade he was very very good i just feel imho he beat a shot Mugabe a shot Curry and a shot ray leonard....still no one else was beating Leonard maybe terry made him shot..same goes for mugabe...so Terry should get resoect for those wins...terrys title reign started when there were faded stars his career ended with welter stars de lay hoya,whittaker,quartet...and those 3 fights didnt happen altho they had been planned since 95/96...a shame as in between his competition was weak no one to fight

Too bad donald the cobra curry didnt train as hard as he should have....he got lazy and loyd honeygan made curry pay for it...and curry simply lost it by this fight...curry lost his edge his zeal....

Wouldn't be shocked. He was dropping a lot of weight back in the mid 80s getting down to 147. His recent fights before this had been at 160. From what I hear, most of Curry's focus in training for fights had been getting his weight down going back quite a while. In contrast, Norris was one of those guys who loved training, always looked in fighting shape. You can see the difference in their energy levels in this. Norris was training like a top professional, Curry to make weight limits.

Don't know how Donald got away with posing in front of his opponents before he punched for as long as he did but he did until the fight with Honeyghan and his other losses but that was his style until the end of his career. A good fighter though and it showed in this fight with Norris, his 2 fights with the magic man Starling and other fights!

im a huge terry norris fan he was awesome but had a glass jaw which made his fights scary to watch because even when he was dominant one punch could stop it. Julian Jackson damn hf you haven't seen it go watch

The fact is that Curry was damaged goods by the time this fight took place, just like Mugabi and Leonard were by the time Norris fought them.

Imo Curry would have knocked him out in 2 or 3 rounds if the fight took place pre 86 or even the curry that fought Mccallum,but after the honeyghan then Mccallum fights Curry was never the same again.Sometimes in boxing nothing recedes like success,Michael Nunn the same to a lesser degree.

I give both Norris and Camacho credit because they both knew they had to win by K.O. or by a wide margin because Sugar Ray had to be dam near dead to lose a decision.

I can look back at most fighters and make sense of their careers. Curry is another issue. Like how did he go from being so awesome to so exploitable? He didn't really get old. There wasn't like a specific beating that took it out of him. I didn't hear about any drug issues. It was like suddenly he just wasn't all that and that's after he proved himself against good competition. I just can't really explain it.

Going off what I've read and from an interview with Curry on here (in which is is really vague about his losses) I'd say he lost his desire. I think boxing became something he could do, rather than what he wanted to do. When desire goes so does the edge that's needed for top-level competition. Curry was a fighter that relied on top-level reflexes to make his style work, because he spent a lot of time in punching range. Curry had something like 400 amateur contests and was boiling down to make 147 well before losing to Honeyghan. I remember pictures of him training in a plastic suit shortly before the Colin Jones fight in early 1985. He seemed to lose focus when plotting his next move after unifying the Welterweight title, the aim being a super-fight with Hagler at 160. He delayed the jump up to 154, supposedly on Ray Leonard's advice, then missed out on the opportunity when Leonard challenged Hagler himself. After that it all went wrong. He looked a shadow of himself against Honeyghan, sluggish and weak, then the one-punch KO against McCallum. You can see in this fight that he's determined and shows flashes of his once great talent but Norris is an excellent fighter, at his peak at 23, whereas Curry seems old for 29.
