I always die laughing when 30 seconds in to the fight Foreman is like "Norris is taking too long" and Merchant goes "The fight just started George!" Oh Foreman.

Norris did something before this fight that a lot of ringside observers will never forger. NV Athletic Commission chairman Chuck Minker was sitting ringside in a wheelchair with a breathing apparatus two weeks away from dying. Despite his condition, he insisted on seeing this fight. Norris entered the ring and walked around it, yet with everything on his mind he spotted Minker and reached through the ropes and extended his gloved hand to him. A beautiful gesture to a dying man.

chavez immediately said after their first fight that taylor deserved a rematch. I was taylor who moved up to welterweight following the chavez fight and then to junior middlewieght to fight norris. I think taylor's camp didn't want an immediate rematch

Hah! I love George Foreman and Lamps, that's why when I watch these old fights I always grab the HBO version if it's available. Nothing better than George saying something occasionally dumb but often very funny, the man should have never left boxing commentary. HBO fights have never been the same since...

There was really no reason for Steele to stop the fight sooner, as Taylor was still able to fight.

People always comment on Norris' competition and often pointing to this fight as an insignificant win for him since Taylor was shot after the Chavez fight. But there is no indication of that, Taylor looked very much still fresh and sturdy in this fight. Was definitely still a viable opponent at that time.

Terry was bigger, stronger, and just as fast. MT had no chance.

I agree with you about that. But in hindsight it's clear that Taylor had been taking too much punishment. And you hear so many people say "he deserved the win" -- but didn't Chavez deserve it even more?

after the fight chavez said that taylor deserved a rematch. taylor moved up to fight davis. that was I believe chavez second defense of his WBC title, there were issues with don king as well, but dont say chavez was not willing to fight him cause that is not the case. again chavez was in his second fight at welterweight and back then moving up in weight was a big deal because fighters didn't gain that much after the weigh in. hey you didnt reply to the other comments about steele.

That's why I think Steele should actually have stopped the fight sooner. But all the "two seconds away from glory" bullshit makes people think it was wrong to stop it at all.
@uncletony6210

it was actually waived at 5 seconds. the official time was wrong. Significant because 2 seconds was not enough time for JC to land one more punch, but five WAS.

look. It's obvious that the first chavez fight had no effect on Taylor's subsequent performances. As unfortunate as the outcome of the 1st Chavez fight was, Taylor here looks faster, more fluid and simply better than at any point in his career. problem is he was a much smaller guy, never really had a big punch and Norris was a great jr middle. Of course chavez refused an immediate rematch. Taylor dominated him the first time and would have done it again.

My best friend fought Taylor and beat the shit out of him in the ring. Knocked him down several times. However, since Taylor was the champ, the only way he could have won is to have a knockout. But Taylor knows that Johnny beat the crap out of him.

Just watched an interview with Meldrick Taylor BEFORE the Chavez fight. I am here to tell you HE WAS DONE (AS FAR AS BEING DAMAGED) BEFORE the Chavez fight. I mean, he was mumbling and hard to understand, glassy eyed, stiff and robotic like he was having a hard time coming up with reponses to the interviewer. Meldrick was the fastest puncher I have EVER seen and I have been watching boxing since I was a little kid. Maybe which boxers get dementia depends a lot on genetics. Really sad story!

LOL That is pure bullshit!, Meldrick called out Chavez after he beat a young undefeated prospect named Aaron Davis for the WBA welterweight championship in January of 91, but Chavez said that he didn't want to fight him because he felt comfortable at junior welterweight. He was the one that didn't want an immediate rematch but instead chose to wait to fight him like four and a half years later!

Davis was the champ. Taylor moved up from 140 to 147... he shoudl have stayed at 140 if he really wanted to fight Chavez again. When they did fight again Taylor was washed up.

Meldrick had all the tools to be a great boxer. He had the speed and the ability. But I think he was not tough enough. Some people can take punches better than others, and I don't think Taylor was ever meant to be a boxer. He was certainly athletic enough to get away with it, but he didn't have the toughness to stick with it.

+Andrew R McCloskey agreed, norris challenged chavez who won his first title at 130!!! What a cowardly thing to do. He never fought anyone his size that was good and his best victories came against faded boxers or smaller guys moving up. Norris never fought jones,benn,toney,Jackson rematch,McClellan,etc. all these guys were at one point just a few pounds above him. Too much of a bully to take those guys on. But chavez was better than both norris and Trinidad and everyone knows that.
