Highlights of the huge upset between "Terrible" Terry Norris and Simon "Mantequilla" Brown in December 1993.
This fight was the 11th title defense for Norris' WBC Super Welterweight Championship which he won back in 1990m when he viciously knocked out John "The Best" Mugabi in the first round with a thunderous right hand in Mugabi's hometown of Tampa, Florida.
His knockout win was named Knockout of the Year 1990 by Ring Magazine.
Norris then defended his WBC Super Welterweight Championship 10 times and some of his notable defenses were against Troy Waters, Meldrick Taylor, Sugar Ray Leonard, Donald Curry, Carl Daniels and Jorge Fernando Castro.
On the other hand, Simon Brown moved up to the Super Welterweight division after losing his WBC Welterweight Championship to James Buddy McGirt. Brown was coming up with a 5 win streak as a Super Welterweight before taking on Norris.
Earlier in 1988, Simon Brown won the then vacant vacant IBF World welterweight title against Tyrone Trice via a 14th round TKO and have defended that title 9 times, notably against the likes of Luis Santana, Bobby Joe Young, Jorge Vaca, a rematch with Tyrone Trice and Maurice Blocker in a WBC-IBF unification title fight.
Simon Brown's victory (in this fight) against a prime Terry Norris was named Upset of the Year 1993 by Ring Magazine.

Such a shame Simon Brown tends to get overlooked when talking about the eighties welterweights.He was a hard hitting and long reigning champ.His war with Tyrone Trice was incredible.

Jeff Jackson I remember watching this fight live and the shock of it all,rspecially at Terry's height in the P4P so when we broke the fight down,saw how Terry leaned over his front foot and very plodding,Simon Brown was there to expose,kick his ass and baptize him at the same time because Terry became very much a balanced fighter after that!!I love this channel!

Brown had Norris hurt in every round of this fight. Norris' style left him exposed against good counter punchers.

Norris also has no chin. But fair play to Brown.

Well a major flow in Norris style was him leaving his chin too high after an exchange , (this is were Abel improved his training method in teaching GGG to always tuck his chin after combinations)he also bent to the right too much hence being susceptible to those right hands and leaning to the point he gets inadvertently hit in the back of the head not only in this fight but many other fights were his opponents were not afraid of him.

Watched this live at the time and couldn't believe what was happening. I'm sure Brown was a hard hitter, with decent skills and chin to match, but something was seriously wrong with Norris this night. Was he weight drained or weakened by something else, because he beat greats, made Leonard look like an old man overnight, and took cleaner shots from bigger punches and never looked this bad. Hats off to Brown though, I remember being really impressed he did it.

I remember Terry Norris very very well when he was at the height of his career. All sorts of "buzz" about a fight with Chavez who was also a great fighter then. Poor Terry....he's suffering now from Chronic Brain Damage and has difficulty speaking. Wish him the best.

Getting knocked out by a helluva right hand from Julian Jackson, ok...getting knocked down by a Simon Brown jab is another. I am convinced that something was wrong with Norris on this day because I have seen him take much bigger punches by better fighters and not react like this!

We've seen the same thing happen with other fighters. The most obvious was Kell Brook when knocked down by a relatively weak jab/hook from Terence Crawford. This was very probably as a result of 2 gruelling fights previously with GGG and Spence Junior where he had his eye socket broken twice. A fully fit Kell Brook, fighting before his defeat to GGG where he went up 2 weight divisions because no-one would fight him, would never have gone down so easily and would have given Crawford a much, much harder battle! It happens in boxing.

Terry, as the career punches started to accumulate, became so vulnerable to the brain scrambling shot to the temple. He was really never the same after this fight. The Julian Jackson KO early in his career was just a young fighter in with one of the great punchers in boxing history not respecting the veteran who had bricks for hands. No shame in getting poleaxed by JJ who did the same to many good fighters but at this stage, Terry was just starting to show the signs of a fighter who would eventually end up with neurological issues due to boxing for the rest of his life.

That was a rabbit punch at the end. It was Browns night, but that was an illegal punch. To his credit Norris came back and beat Brown in a solid-comeback fight. Norris fought the wrong fight against Brown by going toe-to-toe with and not using his legs. In the second fight he stayed on his toes, will frequently going inside and brawling with Brown and then using his legs and dancing away. Norris was unusual because he was a puncher-boxer who loved to brawl but also had those great boxing skills and legs to move around the ring. When Norris was more of boxer-punched he was very hard to defeat. Great fight for Brown. Their rematch was a very good fight for Norris.

Cyz says "right on the chin" after the straight left first knockdown. Go to :36 and see how the shot is right on the left eye and NOT the chin. Terry wobbled every time he got hit and as the announcer noted that last glancing blow on the back of the head should hardly have put him down and out. Imagine Norris against a prime Hearns at 154? He would have been in a coma from the first right. NO DOUBT the Duran that iced Moore at 154 would have done the same to Norris. The first clean landing straight right hand from Roberto stretches Terry.

Norris' corner should've stopped the fight when he was stepping in pot holes going back to the corner after round 3. I didn't know he took that much punishment because his brain is damaged. Few boxers know when to call it quits.

@rusty0303

That commentator was Bobby Czyz, former light heavyweight and cruiserweight world champion. He knows of what he speaks. Terry Norris was a glass mandible away from ATG status. He had all the skill and no ability to take a solid punch. He dominated Brown in the rematch because he got in shape and stayed on his toes for 12 rounds, instead of standing flat footed in pocket and right in Brown's wheelhouse.

Terry Norris could've been the most complete fighter in the last 30-40 years if it wasn't for his chin, it was a great weakness and his style of fighting wasn't for someone who had a bad chin. Other than the chin he was a fine fighter who could do it all but chose to slug much more than he should've.

Ahmed Ishmael I would have to agree with that assessment. Norris was in every way a junior Middleweight Sugar Ray Leonard. Except nastier if thats possible. Like Leonard he had the best legs in the business and impeccable combinations as well as superb reflexes. He also had good snap on his punches and was one of the most effective offensive fighters I've ever seen. His only flaw was his tendency to stay in the pocket too long and keep his head up a bit too long when he went on offense. However when he used his legs and employed lateral movement he was VERY difficult to hit clean. Norris was virtually unbeatable when he BOXED and moved in and out after pummeling his opponents with wicked punishing combinations. The reason his chin was maybe a bit sub par was the fact the he engaged in over 300 amateur fights and his sparring sessions according to many sources, were simply brutal. Each fighter is built different and some can sustain head trauma and not reap any side affects over the years. Others like Norris simply were not built to sustain consistent head trauma. From looking at this fight it appears to me that he may have been concussed in sparring before this bout and he wasn't sufficiently recovered. Either way at his best in his prime years he was a spectacular fighter and would have given any fighter from the 80s and 90s a hard way to go.

Norris way too open for the punches, no defense at all, and that chin was too high as well, an invitation for the blows. The last punch was illegal though...
@kevinaraujo4945

No defense is correct it seems everyone that praises Norris doesn't see that he has no defense. He relied too much on offense and forgot that boxing is a offensive and defensive sport. The reason he got knocked out is because he doesn't duck punches. His head is high leaving open for counter puncher's
