the thing that makes this incredibly natural is the silences between the dialogue. They're bigger than you'd normally get in a show and make it feel like a real conversation between 2 people who've only just met.

It's also important to contrast Richie's approach to these two situations. He views polishing the forks with such disdain and embarrassment at the beginning, but by the end is enthusiastically offering to peel more mushrooms with Chef Terry, showing appreciation for both the task and the person doing it. Such a clever demonstration of his growth in this episode.

Arguably the best episode of television this year. It showed that Richie does belong and has a place amongst all these insanely talented people, and the same for Ebon as an actor. They put him next to one of the most sought after actors alive and he completely holds his own. It’s a remarkable episode with several nuanced layers of meaning and emotion.

That simple statement genuinely helped remove distractions in my life that kept me from my loved ones, career, hobbies, and simple things that bring me joy. It makes me happy knowing how many people are impacted the same way by this wonderful show.

I haven't seen the show, but it was such a nice detail about her finding her dad's notebooks and seeing they contained the message of not forgetting the strange and vivid moments we pass through, only to have the job carry her away from this strange and lovely moment, which occured because of the job. Although I was pretty much on board with the episode as I anticipated it, and that was (very) broadly how it played out, the first time I saw "every second counts", I groaned a little bit. High performance demands that you focus on the right things, and there are reasons that athletes talk in cliches. Among other things, these are the things they try to keep telling themselves, hoping to keep their head in the right place. Best not to get distracted by giving a nuanced answer. It could shift your focus to things outside your control. For all that, if you stick too hard to the mantras and motivational quotes, you risk turning them into empty phrases, and yourself into a miserable robot, abusing yourself and the people you depend on for happiness and/or success. Never actually dealing with the stuff that is holding you back. At the start of the episode, it could still go both ways, and it wasn't obvious to me whether this would be a genuine high performance environment, or the manifestation of the psyche of a highly functioning sociopath; certainly useful for learning essential tools of the trade, but not somewhere you'll want to stick around. So the first time that sentence popped up, it felt like an aggravating corporate motivational poster. The episode happens. I start trusting, like Richie does, that these people genuinely want the best for each other. I don't mind the sign the same way, though it still feels like a mantra that is not really successful in achieving its intended effect. Most of the episode, I don't think about it too much, and as the end nears I've more or less forgotten about it. There is so much to take in, after all, moments that my escape my notice. Then we have this lovely scene with chef Terry. Everything slows down. But soon, the world catches up, and she leaves before she can tell Richie how her father signed his entries, trying to remind himself to spend time where it mattered, and take it all in. But the camera shows the sign one final time, and the Other. Shoe. Drops. Its message instantly re-framed and turned on its head, while still retaining the first meaning. This show's writers are pretty good.

on one hand, there's the new wave of high caliber chefs who are trying to move away from the screaming tyrant. On the other hand, she's not in that mode yet, throw a chef deep in rush service with things going wrong left and right and you'll quickly see how they are.

The amazing thing is when you watch it the scene back, the compliment is well-earned. If you listen to how Richie converses during this scene, it shows some great people skills particularly considering she's the chef-owner. Quiet when she wants to be quiet. Carries the conversation naturally, doesn't make it about him, gets her to open up, and quickly goes to some deep stuff but without being intrusive.

One of the things that makes this scene so impactful is that almost all the other head chefs you see in this show are these perfectionist assholes who get what they want by yelling and demanding. Also they are almost exclusively guys. So when you hear things like “chef Terry is always watching” (Terry being a name that can be masculine or feminine), you kind of assume it will be more of the same. But the slow realization that we have as this scene unfolds, is that THIS is Chef Terry and that she seems to be successful without all of those negative traits. And Richie who has been trying to be a leader using the yelling and alpha methods now realizes that leadership isn’t what he thought, and it makes all the difference for his character. They mess with your expectations so much in this season, hats off to the writers of this show.

Of course, she also employs the "fu Garrett" guy to be the bad cop, who is their day to day manager. I do love the show, but I actually think they slightly overdid the kindness and light tone overall this season, possibly for a reckoning in the next.

I loved how this scene completely changed what "every second counts" means. It isn't about speed but about making the most of every second we have in this life. While the restaurant runs with to the second precision, what they're doing is making every second count for their guests. Not often that a TV program has a moment that makes you sit up and think but this did. And Olivia Coleman... just WOW!

One thing (of many) that I love about this scene is that it portrays so perfectly two people with mutual respect for one another, despite the vast difference in their standing or experience. Richie asks questions gently but unafraid, and Chef Terry meets him at his level but doesn't coddle him. There's a deep understanding of where each of them is coming from, even if they don't know the details of the story.

Watching people care about Richie and watching him take pride in himself and decide he was going to start taking himself seriously…it felt like, this is what life is supposed to be. I just realized while rewatching this, that when she brings up her father and the strange notes he kept, it ties in to her idea for the restaurant to keep notes on the guests and pass them along for better service. EDIT: Someone else mentioned that it’s likely he also signed his letters with “Every Second Counts”, just like the sign in the kitchen.

Richie is such a profoundly sad character and watching him finally take the ropes that all his friends and family have been throwing him to pull himself up was very rewarding. Wonderfully written character, beautifully acted by Ebon. Forks was one of the finest episodes of any tv show I've ever seen, it was the high point of the series and the series is absolutely teeming with excellence. Season 2 knocked it out of the park. Almost every character grew and evolved in the ways they needed to in order to take the restaurant and themselves to the next level. Richie's growth was my favorite and this was my favorite episode of the series so far. This scene was beautiful and poetic... yet powerful in the most subtle way.

OKAY, likely a LONG spiel why this scene is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE scene from the Bear: it's been months now since i watched this show, and particularly this scene. i actually wanted to look it up one day, and saw it hadn't been uploaded by anyone, which i thought was crazy because again, it's my favorite, and surely someone else would at least think highly enough of it to upload it, or at least discuss it. but no one has since the last time i checked so here we are. given the amount of time that has passed, i may not be remembering things how they happened, so sorry in advance! - we are conditioned to expect fast tempo and insane standards for really top of the line restaurants. i believe "every second counts" is shown early on in the episode, and given the brash nature the staff talk to each other, and the fast pace of everything happening during this episode, many of us understand that motto to align in the manner it would with a fast, hectic environment; eg: "faster! faster! every second counts!". A lot of what this episode shows up to this point aligns with we would expect. Yet, when we finally meet the head honcho, whereas we stereotypically would expect someone like Chef Ramsey, or a don't-speak-unless-spoken-to-type head figure, we instead get this warm and welcoming Chef Terry beautifully played by Olivia Colman. I actually had to rewind when this scene first started because i thought i had missed who this character was supposed to be. Pay attention with the pace at which they speak. I think with TV, we are used to this fast pace of dialogue, so when we get to these deliberate pauses, it immediately feels unnatural in the context of TV, but they are so relaxing! It's such a welcomed break, but more importantly, i feel the pace and pauses lend to the realness of the conversation, and help make it feel as intimate as it is. - its impact on Richie: I think many of us share a perspective with Richie. "Why do you do this?" "Time well spent??". Throughout the show, we see Sydney, Carmy, and Marcus and their obvious talents and youth, and what they have to offer. We easily understand why Richie would perhaps feel intimidated, and has fought to hang onto whatever value he had within the old system of the restaurant. We might wonder like Richie does "where do i fit in all of this?". We see how he hinders other people at the (bear) restaurant, and would easily believe that people might view him as useless as he feels. This scene is the payoff for all those feelings and thoughts Richie deals with. Some might feel this scene is maybe perhaps too heavy handed in delivering all this, but 1) it feels so good that who cares?? 2) it might feel that way when youre stopping to analyze it all. In the end though, it's an incredibly thoughtful scene that beautifully weaves and ties off a lot of stuff aforementioned above. First, when Chef Terry says "it's never too late to start over", notice how it cuts to Richie, and the moment it spends with Richie as he seems to internalize those words. I feel it really hits him as he has felt up to now that he is done and can't really become anything of value to anyone. The way he's looking up, and then looks down, takes a moment, then continues the conversation--- whew, absolutely love it! You really feel he takes those words to heart for once. Related with this is how he thinks Carmy views him. I think Richie starts this episode off by cleaning forks, right? Richie believes that a big reason for their contentious relationship must be that Carmy thinks so little of him. So Carmy has sent him off almost as punishment to come to this restaurant and belittle himself by spending hours upon hours to just clean forks. You see this manner of thinking again in this scene when Richie apologizes "im sorry [Carmy] pulled a favor" and Terry firmly answers "i don't do favors". I love that this statement is not explained further, and they just continue to the next point of the conversation. If Richie is like me, I don't immediately understand the response "i don't do favors" -- perhaps Terry is just being nice, or doesn't think of "favors" as favors, or who knows? I forget about it as quickly as it came. BUT, this brief mention pays off at the end where she turns around and says "he believes in you, you know?". And the way that Richie STILL automatically doesn't believe it. He chuckles/scoffs in disbelief and asks "what makes you say that?". And then Terry, true to form, matter-of-factly and plainly replies "He told me. he says you're good with people; he's not wrong". And that's it. She turns around and leaves. No further explanation. Nothing. This moment kills me because I believe it's the first time it sinks into Richie on how Carmy truly feels about him. So by the end of this scene, you/Richie really understand that Chef Terry is someone who says what she means, and that's it. When you think back about her "i dont do favors" response, you understand that she truly doesn't view Richie, or him being there as a favor. You understand that she truly thinks peeling those mushrooms is "time well spent". I feel it makes you/Richie think back and realize perhaps the lens you viewed everything up until now has been the wrong one. You can go back and realize the deeper value of what you have seen, and what has been said by people there at that restaurant. Lastly, the episode has focused on details throughout the whole episode, and how and why they matter to the people that pay attention to them. More or less, people respect and appreciate the details to respect and appreciate the people they serve, and themselves. So when this scene ends, and it cuts to "every second counts", you think "oh shoot, ...thats what he signed off with!". But then you realize your preconceived meaning of "every second counts" as a motto that demands pace and excellence is not really the meaning it gave to the restaurant there. Instead, it was more so a reminder to appreciate and give care to the tiniest of details, and moments, as doing so can ultimately be what makes it all "time well spent". I could go OFF even MORE on this scene but I won't for all our sakes. It's just such an incredibly comforting scene that I'll carry with me forever. I hope this scene provides some of the same feelings to you as well.

She is so bloody brilliant and believable in EVERYTHING she does. IMO, the best actress out there and has been so for at least the last 10 years or so. After her unbelievably awesome performance in Broadchurch, I find myself watching EVERYTHING she does. Never disappointed.

Something I never really picked up on until now is how they're both raised by a military father but grew up and became two ends of a spectrum. She became like her father, with a fondness for structure/standards. And Richie became unlike his father, unstructured. Yet, there they both are. Same place, same time, peeling mushrooms. Absolutely love that.

What I love most about this scene is that Ritchie might be the only person who knows the true significance of ‘Every Second Counts’. It has multiple applications, but in its purest form is about how substantial the most mundane task can be. Great reminder that life is beautiful.

This is a story about childhood trauma. OC's character has resolved, grown & is at peace - but she recognises in Richie someone was is still carrying that burden. Their acting / interplay is brilliant (screenplay treats the audience as adults not needing YA exposition) - her words & behaviours give him a pathway to the light

This was just such a wholesome, intimate conversation that made you feel like not only were you a fly on the wall, but somehow part of it as well. It took so long for this scene to be uploaded but it was worth the wait. Also, Chef Jess is so pretty. I like the subtle tension there is between her and Richie even though Richie seems to be oblivious to it.

In the earlier scene, when she comes down to ask if Richie wants to go over staff reviews with her, and then says everyone will miss him, she looks back, twice, as she's leaving, to see if he's watching her. (He's not, he's polishing forks) It's a clear tell. The writers definitely wanted to present her as into him.

This scene. This scene is my favorite scene in the series thus far and BY FAR. Especially the part they don’t show in the clip where Richie makes the realization when he sees the EVERY SECOND COUNTS sign. There’s NOTHING like seeing a guy realizes that he was worth, and discovering that he can be and is good at something. This episode and the ones after it made Richie my favorite character in the show.

Great season! They took it up a notch from season 1. What I appreciate from the characters portrayed by Olivia Colman and Will Poulter is the simple and quiet dialogues. The dialogues with Ritchie and Marcus during their stage revealed so much about Carmy in the most subtle way, even if it was a sentence or two. I loved how everything connected with these episodes. Can't wait for season 3. Every second counts :)

Such an important conversation for Richie. You can see the self sabotage in him when he apologizes for "Carmy pulling a favor". Even after Love Story, part of him still won't let go of the "attack" he's feeling. He's so close and yet can't let go of his bias. Chef Terry does everything in her power right until her departure to get Richie to understand this isn't an attack. She wants him to be part of their family, of her and Carmy's, in the restaurant business.

I try and carve out some time to get back to the basics of what made me love my craft. It's meditative and deeply satisfying.
