Terry Pratchett's Discworld Noir (Part 01)

My second favourite adventure game. Discworld Noir was by far the best of the three Discworld games as it had an original storyline & didn't feature the voice of Eric Idle. The PC version is the one to play but unfortunately it doesn't work on modern OS's. So unless you have an old Windows 98, 2000 or XP machine lying around your only choice is to pick up a copy of the PS1 port (exclusive to Europe) which is a pale shadow of the PC original.
Far lower detail, missing animations & audio, very bad performance in certain areas, lower resolution, scripting bugs, random audio bugs. The PS1 port is a tough pill to swallow for people who remember the PC version fondly. So it's lucky that the story & characters are strong enough to carry the game despite the problems.

Man I wish they would make more discworld games like this, but I guess with Terry passing away we may never get any more. RIP terry the best author of all times.

Im from Argentina and I come from time to time, to remember this classic. The first time I played this game I had around 12 and today I have 30. The humor of Lewton, the story, the surprises, the twists, the voices, the characters.. Always going to remember this gem with joy and melancholy.

Criminally underrated game, and one of the very best adventuregames of all time. They simply don't make games like this anymore. I will miss it for the rest of my life, seeing as I can no longer make a single OS run it. *sob*

theres a playstation 1 version that you can emulate on pc, mobile etc. think its possible to get mouse support but ive played through it on console. its pretty good.

It`s because at this time classic point & click adventures and 3D graphics were taboo. It needed it´s time until it was excepted and if this game would have been released later, maybe it would have gotten better critics.

Yes I loved Lewton's wisecracks and Chandleresque dialogue. Getting old games converted, or rewritten for modern machines is a labour of love for a lot of people. If I didn't have about a million other things to do (very few of which I'm actually attending to) I could see myself doing thanks sort of thing

The interrogation system reminds me of L.A. Noire, especially Lewton's notebook. Some of those old games really were ahead of their time...

The dialoge in this game is the finest I`ve seen in a computer game. I play this on my modern pc with windows 10. You gotta run it with administrator priviliges, and 16 bit colour (which you set in compatibility settings). Then everytime you are on the game title screen, press alt+enter to enter window mode, and always start the game by pressing "new game" and escape past the introduction. When you have controll over Lewton, press alt+enter again and the game works perfectly fine.

This. Gem. It's one of my favorite games of all time. But people still don't understand why. Shame. D: I did the game in french, and despite what people say about the french dub, I find it quite good (Lewton seems depressed all the time, and it's not that bad, because he seems to be ironical about everything, rather than amused like the english one :p)

This can be played on windows 7 using vmware there's also a patch on gameworld! Also starting game in windowed mode and switching to full screen after a few minutes works this works for me but not for all!

What are the "scripting bugs" and "random audio bugs" in the PS1 version? I haven't noticed any.

What version of the game do you have - and what are you playing it on? The Scrolls Patches was a great resource for patched to help old games play on newer systems. If you have a MAC there's crossover - and various emulators for PC's and MAC. At the end of the day - you can try compatibility functions - or like I have -got an old XP pc from ebay. These older games are classic - nothing compares much these days. Improved graphics aalone do not make a good game.

+therealbluedragon What do you think about Grim Fandango? When Discworld Noir came out, Grim was my favourite adventure game and I was desperately longing for something with a comparable athmosphere. I then had gotten into tthe discworld books and liked them, but Discworld Noir really hooked me on the series. Plus, it was a great game on its own and while Grim Fandango and DW-Noir pretty much only share a noir inspiration and a dark sense of humor, they are both great games and great examples of the good games that came out during the "dying" era of adventure games..
