@lucklessleenyc

i would say 60% of the rides here are rather careless. which is why there is a high rate of incidents here. these kinds of riders do have a degree of skill, wont take that away from them but there's A LOT of luck involved with this aggressive style. i respect the ability of the riders shown on this channel ( why i come back every once in awhile ) but they are very selfish with how they ride. i hear most people say " we understand the rhythm of the streets" but that's all just a mock up for saying they're careless about those around them and want to ride how they do. new york will be new york. luck runs out *shrug*
@stop223
@stop223 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucklessleenyc I think they don't ride like this all the time. But since it's a race they push their luck. As you already said they are very skilled, otherwise there would be much more crashes...
@aemontarg6934
@aemontarg6934 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucklessleenyc It's a risk reward. Yes there is risk to others around us but when you take into account that most of these tourists or even locals do not check their surroundings or stop like deer in headlights when they walk regardless of the right of way, the luck involved isn't so much in the rider as it is the environment around him. Not to mention the risk is far greater for the rider than it is for the pedestrian if the pedestrian isn't elderly or a woman with a stroller, it is more likely the rider will wipe out to their own peril than to directly impact the pedestrian and hurt them more than the rider. Again it is a chaos-order balance of sorts as you certainly respect the ability of the riders and it is no doubt enviable to be able to do this sort of thing and take that adrenaline pumping, skill-based risk. It really comes down to how you define being careful as anything else the degree of caution is relative to the danger. To some extent following this thought, if you are harmless you will never be a competent rider and same goes with life in general..

At 4:50 you can see the guy in the olive green long sleeves who overtakes everyone from the back going up a decent hill. And what's amazed me was how visibly you could see his bike lurching forward each time he finished a pedal. Everyone else's bikes are just moving forward fluidly, his is literally jumping up that hill. That dude is a beast, he made it look easy.

Was the ride worth giving drivers heart-attacks, endangering pedestrians, and causing personal injury? C'mon, I everyone knows we run lights and stuff. But this just gives us the bad rep. Your group rides irresponsibly, and it was endangering other people's lives on the road. Especially that guy who collided with a pedestrian at the end.

naw dudes, thats just mashing. if you maintain a steady cadence its even easier to climb seated; less tiring and more control, although i highly recommend getting out of the saddle at the end of the first climb to stretch out dem legs. If you cant get up the hill seated with race speed, you should prop lower your ratio. Its just tiny hills, not mountains anyway. also: broadway bomb is open for all bike types. Even doper if a fixed rider wins...

@Doublethizzle

@@ADRNG Oh yeah, I remember coaster brakes as a kid. I don't think I could even ride a bike that doesn't freewheel. Which, the bikes that have the 'pedal backwards' set-up would mean that you must *always* pedal and not allow your feet to rest. Of course, I am nearing 50yo now AND it looks like these guys were pedaling the entire time. So . . . maybe I am just getting too old? It still seems that brakes are far better than foot braking, non-freewheel, or the slide trick. It most certainly seems like my age is the issue because I just want to yell at them to put brakes on their bikes. Either way, I would absolutely love to take a vacation in NYC to ride with these guys. Ever since seeing Quicksilver in the theaters as a kid it has been a dream of mine to ride the streets in New York. I wonder if there is some kind of thing like that? There must be right?

I think brakes are deemed unnecessary weight. Some of these guys don't even have grip tape on their bars! Bottles go in back pockets to avoid the extra weight of a cage & two bolts. Mad bikes, mad skilled riders.

some of us fixed folks just never planned on stopping or slowing down. that used to be my mindset. definitely attracts a certain personality type. you’re signing up to be fully committed and aware of everything around you. i’d say the benefits are you get more of a workout, learn to read traffic, and feel more connected to the bike in a way. now my knees feel like i’m 70 since i refused to run brakes on my fixed gear. slowing down and skidding really messed them up 😩 i wish i just rode a road bike 15 years ago haha

This is not even dangerous or careless driving - it is killers' driving. Guys there are special race tracks for that kind of stuff. Both for roadies only and for MTBs. Go there. Racing in the city you are putting other road users at risk which not only is stupid but gives a strong argument to government to introduce a government control over cyclists - same as we do for cars. With that, you are doing a massive disservice to the whole cycling community.
