I love how she's scared and hesitant until the guy in the hoodie sings. It's like he projected his energy onto her and he just gave her this push to let go of all her fear and insecurity. Before he even opens his mouth, you can see her getting excited and I love it 😍😍

From what i heard, Keala Settle has always been part of choruses in broadway musicals. She has a very powerful voice and wide range, so she always does the belting parts you hear in musical choruses. But Hugh Jackman approached her and told her that she has to take this role, she was reluctant and afraid of being in the spotlight because she has never done it before. Which was why she said she didn't want to come out infront of the music stand at first because she was scared. She clearly broke down a few times while singing in the presentation, and she turned to Hugh for strength because he was the one who encouraged her to be brave and show what she can do by taking up the role as Lettie.

Lort I'm so glad I don't have to type this because you already did. Because this is even more powerful when you realize the story behind it and that she hadn't actually accepted the role at this point. Basically she accepting it when she grabbed High Jackman's hand. She realized she was worthy of the opportunity she waited her life for which he'd placed at her feet and she refused. Good thing her refused to cast anyone else and kept nagging at her. She only agreed to sing for the green light session. Now look! He was right. It was her role. And the song even write just for her voice before he ever asked her.

Keala Settle was the first understudy as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray on Broadway, then played the role in the first national tour for THREE YEARS. She was nominated for a Tony Award in her performance at Hands on a Hard Body, played Madame Thernadier in the 2014 Broadway revival of Les Miserables. Lastly, she's the original Becky (I think, can't remember the track) of Waitress on Broadway.

Y’all the other day I tried showing this to my cousin, explaining that I had watched it at 1 am and cried. We got through maybe the first minute and all she could do was laugh at the the performers exuberance and Keala’s hair flips. She told me that I probably cried just cause it was a late night. No hate to her, but it really takes a specific type of person to appreciate and be moved by this performance. Absolutely other worldly, love it.
@HopeUnquenchable5 жыл бұрын
I think it would take a specific type of person to NOT be moved by this performance; the lyrics alone are so powerful and resonant, but these guys called it right: Keala _became_ the song - all of the emotions, not just the exultant ones, but the scared vulnerable ones as well, and we got to watch her face her fears and come through fighting ✊
@3xplorercr2zy4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but it's like your cousin has never been knocked down. I grew up with my own parents telling me they never talked about me or my brother to their friends because we hadn't done anything worthy of them to brag about us. Grew up being called stupid, weak, etc, and my own mother asking me why couldn't I be less like me. So this song absolutely resonated with me.

The setting and atmosphere definitely sets the mood; I watched this with my family noisy around me in the living room, I didn't even feel the whole movie :/ But when I watched it again in private, it was great and I was touched. A bit of background for you... Hugh Jackman got his start in musical theater in Australia. you can probably find his previous work on KZbin. Most of the people you see in the background singers are some of the best singers in the Broadway community. The Guy who sings with Keala is Ben Thompson from (American idiot) also there is Andrew Keenan Bolger from Newsies and Jeremy Jordan from Newsies also Cynthia Erivo from the Color Purple. So us Broadway Geeks totally can "geek out" on this!!

You nailed it; the song took over the room. If you're a singer, and if you're lucky, there are times when a vibe happens, and it's like being stoned, being taken out of yourself completely, and if you're really, REALLY lucky, the entire room will go with you to that place. I saw when it happened: when she sang, "here I come," and she realized she really was going to have to leave the safety of her music stand, so she pushed out in front of it and just let go into the meaning and the emotion of the song. That was a real thing. I feel like I've been honored to have witnessed it.

Some theaters are having sing along showings of "The Greatest Showman". You guys seem like you'd love that! And I decided if this song doesn't touch your soul, you have no soul. I listen to it several times a day.

Well maybe not “no soul,” but if this song doesn’t move a person, I suspect that that they haven’t yet lived long enough and had enough rejection and **** happen to them to identify with the message or with Keala braving her insecurities to become the song.

😍😻 no lie she made my heart all tense when she sang this song. It's one of them songs that is addictive but with so much meaning. I'm so pleased she did perform in the Greatest Showman because no one else could of done it better. Another great reaction. Love your intro #Catchy
