Your argument relies on the foreign business in question being a monopoly power. Regular businesses can’t just “charge what they want” they have to keep in line with other competitors, in this case domestic competitors which are at a cost disadvantage and make slimmer margins. So, when the tariff is enacted against the foreign company, they either have to raise prices to ensure they maintain a profit (and their domestic counterparts will follow suit) or they have to abandon the market, leaving the domestic firms with less competition and less downward pressure on profit margins and they will raise their price.

You are wrong on tarriffs. The missing logic in your argument is that US importers (or others in the chain) will not reduce margins as you state. The demand may go down, but the prices will go up and, if people want the product, they will pay the price and businesses in the chain will all maintain their margins. Trump's idea is to give more of the business to US firms that make the product. But, when the American made products are sold, it is at the higher price. Who pays the increased price? You and I, not China as Trump clainms. Trump wants to push increased costs (the Trump sales tax) on the lower income levels and reduce the billionaires' taxes. Your logic is faulty.

Demand may go down. If a domestically manufactured product sells for less, that is what is sold and the importer goes out of business. That is the purpose of the tariff.
