I love how they integrated the motor vertically instead of horizontally, it is usual that the axis of the motor is the axis of rotation of the joint, but in this case the motor goes vertical to transform the movement from rotary to linear with a gearbox , similar to a muscle, in the university it is usual that almost everyone does it the other way, it really did not occur to any of us in my class at the university and neither did any professor. Really smart.

@Ken_1971 Жыл бұрын
Errmm .... I am not sure if you really understood the term "vertical integration" correctly here ----> definition of vertical integration : Vertical integration is a strategy that allows a company to streamline its operations by taking direct ownership of various stages of its production process rather than relying on external contractors or suppliers. Means they design and produce every part of the robot themselves ... so no external supplier is delivering any part of that robot. Of course i might be wrong and the motor is indeeed built in on the other axis and the mechanics works differently. i could not see that in the video though.

People don't understand the difference between this and Boston Dynamics. Let me explain. The reason the Tesla Bot looks stiff and slow is probably because every movement is exactly planned for the demonstrations. The Boston Dynamics demonstrations are obviously planned as well (they are NOT interested in making the robot think like a human as many people seem to believe) The difference is that the Boston Dynamics robots are able to react to their environment. For example the feet slip randomly while walking. That makes it more robust, faster, and not every movement of every motor needs to be planned in advance
@hxllside Жыл бұрын
This problem is much more difficult than it seems. Boston Dynamics uses AI to predict the position of the robot, the environment and physics in a process called model predictive control. I learned the basics of that in a really good university course.

Four key points... 1.The video is created to give the talented candidate a walk through as though the team members were describing their frontier work to you alone. 2. Vertical design means system specs drive the design of the bespoke subsystems. In contrast, other robot teams build from a catalog of available components. Tesla engineers design and build everything exactly as required by the system - with manufacturing at scale always a constraint. 3. Why are the actuators and not the sensors highlighted? Because the sensors simply feed raw data to the computers, whose design is done by software engineers - shared with the vehicle team. What Tesla is recruiting for here are English-speaking hardware engineers - the best in the world. 4. Why are only the small parts shown? Because that's how top down specifications lead to bottom up realization. Hardware engineers solve the whole system in very small steps and solutions.

What people don't understand is that Tesla will never make the most amazing actuators (or at least not in the beginning) but actually create them in a way that you can mass produce them and then have an affordable but useful bot, which, once again, likely wont be the most amazing thing you ever saw, but it will offer an actual value. Just like the Model 3+Y they aren't the most amazing EVs on the market, but they are affordable yet truely useful in real life. The very same things that made the Model 3+Y the most successful EVs on the roads. Maybe not the very best stuff out there but at their price point they actually are still pretty much the only EV that you can actually use as primary car. Mach-E and others are nice cars too, but they just don't have the efficiency especially when driving at higher speeds in the winter to be actually usable properly.

One spring constant is not optimal in all situations. When actuator bandwidth allows it, it is often better to implement compliance via feedback. Then it can be dialed up and down as necessary. With all the technological expertise we got nowadays, actually an autonomous forklift would make more commercial sense than the Bot.

@@favesongslist a large Martian colony in the near future, is not economical viable. Don't fall for all those SpaceX CGI hype videos about an hypothetical Martian colony. The same as using a Rocket for point to point traveling, or the Hyperloop.

@@RogerM88 i never thought Mars was about money. Starship is one amazing development for someone that has already disrupted space flight and NASA has paid Billions to land people on the Moon, after being currently the only manned launch capability in the USA; that lands it first stages, I guess to you that is all hype.
@RogerM88 Жыл бұрын
@@favesongslist Starship has many design issues for Crewed missions beyond Earth's Orbit. Don't get easily hyped with all the claims. For a reason NASA Engineers figured out the most efficient and safer way for Crew missions it's a modular approach. Starship is like a 3 in 1 vessel, Ascent module, Spaceship, and Lander, that adds too much complexity for the mission. I strongly believe, a Crewed mission to Mars will be made with a modular Spaceship assembled at LEO, using Nuclear engines, for a faster interplanetary voyage, while landing on Mars in a smaller compact module. As for cargo missions, Starship could have some application, but the main engines being so close to the ground, plus it colossal size to be refueld beyond Earth, could mean it not being used far from LEO. And for commercial applications to LEO, it would need to have a functional payload hatch, that would require structural reinforcement of the hull adding more dry weight and requiring extra maneuvering to deploy the satellites or probes without a Canadarm. Not a surprise SpaceX is now considering a dispenser system. In conclusion, not a surprise Starship be essentially used for Starlink missions.
@favesongslist Жыл бұрын
@@RogerM88 Interesting reply. Totally agree that Starship has many design issue that need resolving and that many initial flights will be to launch V2 Starlinks before testing the tricky landings, then the LEO refueling issue that thankfully SpaceX have been working with NASA for years now, NASA have just recently given SpaceX an extended additional Lunar Starship contract so must be fairy sure there are no major show stoppers. SpaceX so far have been refused access to nuclear fuel so i do not see that being a viable way forward this decade at least, but like you would like to see this move forward. Right now with all the raptor improvements in performance I do not see additional weight required for any reinforcements being an issue. I do not believe we will see a crew larger than around 16 flying to Mars in maybe NET 2029, That should not require a fully recyclable life support system, beyond what is already proven on the ISS. Still a lot of logistics support from unmanned one way robotic missions first.

They're obviously needs to be a smaller FSD computer I guess you could just chop it in half It have them both connected by fiber optics and put the two parts where it be most practical and so they take up less space so you can focus on articulation with the shoulders and torso or you can mount the computer sideways, I see you have multiple prototypes too so obviously progress is being made great work! This will be Tesla's greatest product if it succeeds!
@mm-hl7gh Жыл бұрын
why fiber optics ? what do you believe is the advantage from optical fiber compared to copper ?
@mrnobody.4069 Жыл бұрын
@@mm-hl7gh fiber optics are faster and when two computers are separated from each other and far apart within the robot you wouldn't just use normal wire s because a lot of data has to pass through them both it's also why we use fiber optics to connect servers computers to routers everything standard copper connections would just be a little slow.
@mrnobody.4069 Жыл бұрын
@@mm-hl7gh oh and it's also a part of the hardware AI problem with a connection between two computers or its own RAM would be too slow to run the neural network efficiently even if you're CPU is fast enough the connection is not even between internal components and that's why we also have specially designed AI hardware and neuromorphic computers just to deal with that!
@fredbloggs5902 Жыл бұрын
You obviously don’t know the FSD computer is duelled as a backup that’s not required in the bot, so size is a non issue. But keep going, your ignorance is hilarious.
@mrnobody.4069 Жыл бұрын
@@fredbloggs5902 actually I knew it had two processors but it's inside the same case splitting it in half so even though it's a smaller computer each part has one processor and they're connected to each other to make an essentially the same computer but In a way that would be better for design you have completely misunderstood the entire comment and that is hilarious to say the least! All it is it's just having two smaller FSD computers with just one CPU that's half the size communicating to another one at very high speeds that's also half the size In a way that would make it a full FSD computer except for that they're smaller and you can orientate them differently to save space for other things like more actuators more skeletal structure or batteries or whatever the heck you want!
