Wow Lars, Thank you! Gotta say you did an amazing job of rearranging the ideas in my video to flow better, and then added a whole lot more. Really enjoyed this! 👏 Gotta add that a couple of days ago I found out how severe the AI talwnt-shortage is. Talked to a friend in a place I used to work, and 5 guys there have given their notice in the span of about 2 weeks. I asked him whether they are from the AI group, and sure enough - 4 out of 5 are AI, one of them actively poached by Microsoft with a doubling of his salary! That's why whenever I tried pulling the conversation back to Tesla, my friend pulled it back to AI hiring, just short of telling me "don't you get it, dummy? This is EXACTLY about Tesla. The whole talent problem is a thing, and if Tesla wins it - as they now very probably will - then they win everything" Part 2 focuses on other stuff, besides hiring. coming soon.

“Great” software engineer is a matter of context. There’s not one dimension of software greatness. But regardless of what a person is great at, they need the right team and process to thrive. Tesla’s main advantage is that it is an infinitely better environment for SW engineers (who are willing to work insane hours) than legacy HW manufacturers, who …. I speak from personal experience… are openly hostile to software best practices and SW driven innovation. All efforts to modernize these companies are just lipstick on that legacy pig.

Thank you Bruce for your comments, I’m an electrical engineer, very in frequently involved with software design myself, I have done it, but mainly power control design, and you are exactly right about having a good team. When I was at a well-managed company with lots of autonomy and was able to get the resources I needed, our small team could get a lot done, and almost nothing got done at another company I went to because the management was so dysfunctional, poor allocation of resources and just an overload of incompetent people getting in the way. I do agree with the premise that One excellent engineer is certainly more valuable than 10 or 50 perfunctory engineers, for sure that is the case in R&D, which was the field I was most involved with, but also applicable to manufacturing engineering, etc, Maybe to a slightly lesser degree. Not so sure about that though

The trick of “leadership “ is to organize , motivate and support people, many of the type that could otherwise be “loose cannons”, around a common, mutually beneficial and preferably outsized intent, aka “vision”. Achieving “visions” also requires grunt work. (10% inspiration/90% perspiration) and, as any baseball fan will tell you, you never know who will make the pivotal play. Love your comments both Steve and Bruce

Thanks Lars, once again fabulous work. I have worked as an engineer for 25 years now. The number one thing I have learned in that time is that talent = success. The number two thing I have learned is that the difference between an amazing and growing company, and a turd is the recognition of this fact by management. I currently work for a turd, but I am near the end of my career, and in part thanks to Tesla can retire quite early.

2:27: Yes, because elecrric cars are easier to build than ICE cars, less complexity, less parts, faster production. But when comparing to Audi's factories, those are mostly ICE factories. It's an apples vs oranges comparison. To truly say that Tesla is better at building cars "period", you would have to compare like-for-like, such as comparing EV factories of equivalent sizes. That would be a fair comparison of car building know-how. Until then, it's an apples vs oranges comparison.

They have a few thousand that are actually using the beta program. They do have 150,000 drivers that are trying to get in, and that are being rated on their driving scores. The mining valuation of asteroids is done within the current valuation model of these commodities. They are valued as such because of their scarcity. Now if they become abundant, their intrinsic value can't be done like this, as the real question is what actual value does that being to our kind and its economy. The sum of raw materials cannot dwarf the actual value delivered.
@bartekjankowski8000
@bartekjankowski8000 2 жыл бұрын
The market price would problably go down, but let's say you need a lot of nickel and iron for your future battery production. You could (somehow) park that asteroid near your factory and treat it like a very cheap mine for next 50 years of production. You then have fully secured your supply lines for those materials. You removed risks that come with variable market prices, and don't have to care if there is a war in country that supply your metals. There is a lot of additional value apart from the value itself.

Tesla is a Silicon Valley company and they understand first mover advantage in their DNA. With robo taxis and AI, first mover is very likely to be the winner of the market, because more data means more learning means a consistently superior product, and whoever moves first will have more data. Anyone entering the market second will have to try to achieve sales with an inferior product that is improving more slowly, because they have less data. There will be effectively one robo taxi and AI winner, which right now seems quite likely to be Tesla. If Tesla wins both, there will be no precedent for how valuable and profitable they will become.

Read "They Knew." Tesla's doing what the US Government should have done in 1970.
@larrybuzbee7344
@larrybuzbee7344 2 жыл бұрын
It was never possible for the US gov or any other to do what Tesla is doing. At their best, governments maintain a business environment that enables companies like Tesla to exist despite competing power blocks. The fact that it not only exists but thrives must be attributed to the entire system that enables it, despite inefficiencies and opposition. When pointing fingers at The Government, a little self awareness goes a long way.

@@MSYGABRIELA Agreed, but it makes no real difference. I'm 67 and have watched the ball bounce for several cycles now. As opposed to most of my cohort the only thing that disappoints me about the ongoing disruption of old paradigms is that it took so long to happen. Unfortunately most old white guys in and out of government will fight this tooth and nail till their dying breaths and even after for those with good estate plans and nasty foundations executing the will of their dead hands.

I do believe Tesla will grow and be unbelievably successful, But it's important to keep your humility. A couple of points, H3 is valuable only in a fusion reactor (which don't actually exists yet and have been 15 years in the future for 50 years). Also that asteroid may have unimaginable amounts of resources but they are still very far away and currently the cost of transporting those resources will be greater than just mining them on earth. So none of this is a given. Anyways, If we humans can keep it together for another couple of 100 years the future looks awesome. Keep up the good work, I do like the upbeat vibe from you video's but do be careful of hubris, it's not a good look. Regards.

You got it: in the AI world, the winners take all. I don’t see more than two companies can lead the AI industries, Google could be the another one since nobody knows much about Google /NASA team. Will bring to the table. And for that simple reason, all talk about Tesla valuation means not much to me, I will just get every penny I can get it, buy Tesla and wait for as long as I live to see what it will be.

The cylindrical format is not needed for LFP for heat management or safety. The only reason to do 4680 format would be if it is faster to manufacture. It may well be but I wouldn’t be surprised if the simpler prismatic cell format could be made faster

This vision of the future might play out, though with considerable uncertainty about timing. Or we may hit a wall from some fundamental limitation that perhaps we know about, or perhaps don't. One we do know about is the nature of artificial neural networks - they are clever enough to be trained to evaluate complicated inputs, but not so clever about deciding what to do. A decision that an immensely larger neural network can make easily with minimal training (our own brains) requires immensely more training - a not-so-clever brute force approach. The ability to be trained to mimic intelligence is not the same as intelligence. But there's still plenty of good things to do - and plenty of money to make - from excellent mimicry.

The value of mining the solar system is large, but not nearly as large as you state. Firstly it ignores the huge cost of returning materials to earth. This means that industry/factories will have to be developed in space for the material to be useful. More than that huge number of people would need to be living in space because the cost of returning finished goods to earth would be huge. Not an easy or quick task and not going to happen at scale anytime soon. Secondly, once a space industry/livings has developed sufficiently the abundance of these raw materials in space and the ease with which they can be mined means that the price will drop dramatically.

It seems to me the value of AI is paradoxical. The better it gets the more jobs it displaces. The more jobs it displaces decreases the money people have to spend on AI services. Thus the better it gets the less it’s worth.
