Rob you said that AP being restricted on where you can activate “is already the case” - you can activate AP anywhere there is a small segment of a lane line. That’s the only requirement, and that has long been a risk. I’m not endorsing the article, but I’m not dismissing their concern either. I even reported a pretty dangerous intersection before, and the community response was “AP isn’t designed for surface streets and intersections” (despite supporting red lights and stop signs outside of FSD) but that doesn’t change the safety implications that it can be enabled ANYWHERE that has a lane line or the appearance of a lane line.

Even just having it red hands disengage if you go into a neighborhood or roadway without lines would be reasonable. Right now the driver is encouraged to not disengage in those areas as it won’t re-engage. If it won’t re-engage, it shouldn’t remain engaged and powering through the unknown. Warn the driver and require takeover. That would solve most of their concerns. Not all, but most.

And guess what? I can activate the adaptive cruise control in every single car that has it everywhere. Not a single car out there has that geoblocked to highways. The Fed might have its attention riveted on unemployment. It's down, which suggests inflationary pressure to the banksters who serve on the Fed. They might decide to nip it in the bud before too long. But I think it's fair to say that nothing the Fed could do with small rate hikes will have any effect on unemployment. The reason is not complicated. It's de-risking and de-coupling from China. A lot of mining and industrial build-out will happen over the next 5-10 years. It has to happen. China is no longer a reliable part of our industrial supply chain. In the longer run, AI looks to be coming for an awful lot of jobs. Productivity will shoot through the roof. That will cause unemployment to soar like never before. And again, the Fed's tools will be ineffective. They really have lost the plot. They did not understand how supply chain breaks caused prices to surge, and sought to control inflation with rate hikes. Inflation is coming back down for now, but mostly that's because supply chains are working better again. But will there be more breaks? I think yes. And I think supply chain breaks may impede Tesla's product ramps in 2024 and 2025. Not stop growth, I hope. But slow it. Anyway, I don't have a lot of confidence that the Fed will adopt a policy that matters much. Wrong analysis, wrong tools. Thanks for your reporting, Rob.

It would not be inappropriate for Tesla to disengage auto pilot with a warning to say “put your hands on the wheel” whenever someone seeks to exceed the designed autopilot limits for the use case in question. This would not prevent PROPER use of autopilot while making the implementation more idiot proof.

Obv. Tesla isn’t at fault, BUT their phantom (false-positive) braking is a serious problem that - for myself - has created an instinct to override any braking by pushing on the accelerator. So the poor design has affected my behavior to be less safe. They COULD have designed it to err on the side of precision rather than recall, which I know is not the right decision in a level-5 system, but is a better decision in a level-2 system where they have a driver monitoring and braking as-needed. This would have taken better advantage of the supervision of the driver for capturing edge cases, aligning driver behavior better with existing cruise control, and not impacting their long-term ability to capture data and train a level-5 system.
