I agree. Phantom braking much more common on two lane roads. To me it seems like the car is just way more cautious on narrow roads. Maybe caution is necessary at this point to avoid making mistakes that might be more dangerous. Like an ounce of prevention sort of thing.

I think there is at least a few things that cause phantom breaking. I know for a fact that it thinking the oncoming car is in the lane youre driving is going to make the car break (this happens more on narrow roads as perception is harder there). It probably also happens when the car doesnt know if there is a path forward. Narrow roads would have this problem on bends because visually it seems like the road is becoming smaller. There is probably other factors but its hard to tell sometimes with AI. As the saying goes NN work in mysterious ways.

You’re right. It will get better. But good to know where the AI needs improvement to make sure to pay even closer attention when using it.

In Australia if you don't stop completely you would get a ticket if a cop spotted it. And you would be lucky if you got away with even 3 Kph over the speed limit.

It would be interesting if you drove at the speed limit, rather than 5+mph over, if the braking would be better?
@teslajl4593

Was actually thinking about that. Going to try. Will keep you posted. If it helps the phantom breaking I’ll be honked at for going the speed limit. Lol

You should report some phantom brakings with the snaphot button, especially at spots like the railway tracks where it always happens.

Good point. I will be better with that. Thank you. Always wonder if those really do anything,

@@teslajl4593 They do. It doesn't fix the problem in the regular sense but it will be put on in storage until it is labeled by the labeling team (now possibly auto-labeled). Then it will be added to the training dataset. It will then be part of training and after a few weeks behavior should improve in theory but keep in mind it competes with other data. Some examples might not make it to the training until way later since they have to be fixing specific problem to have the team labeling it but i am pretty sure they are working on phantom breaking. Alas if people report behavior where it should have stopped or slowed down but didnt it will take the net result in that equation or just not have high confidence until it notices the differences between the scenarios (this can result in unwanted slowdowns until AI finally gets what is different between those scenarios) So anxious drivers might make the car more anxious and i am guessing thats where mild setting comes in. If people freak out with a car going fast around the corners it can train the AI to slow before corners. Sorry if i write too much i just know a little bit about this topic and i find it fascinating.

Keep your foot on the brake pedal and not the accelerator! Driving 101 🤔

I would always tend to agree but my experience with FSD is that it’s so ultra careful that I’m rarely if ever afraid to drive into something. I have been more concerned about phantom breaking. Had a bad experience where the car behind me had to react really fast once.

Well, the "phantom braking" you talk about is caused by the speed modulation built into AP. The reasoning is basically that the car tries to be able to stop in most situations within the detectable space. So if there's a blind bent or the car is not absolutely sure where the road is going, the car might slow down a little to maintain the ability to stop in case there's a stopped car. That's basically what you're told to do in driving school as well at least in well-educated countries. Not sure about the US which has basically no driving lessens.

That would make sense I’m some situations. Buy then why does it happen on some straight aways where visibility is 100%? A have a fee examples of those on the same roads every time. Could be what a previous viewer said about the camera recognizing something close to the road and the AI can’t label it?
@RubenKelevra
@RubenKelevra 2 жыл бұрын
@@teslajl4593 well there are other stuff in AP which can request slowdowns, like cut in detections, pedestrian detections etc. Sure if there are unknown objects on or near the road this might trigger a caution event or will limit the driveable space to the edge of the object, which then let the car slow down to it like its a red traffic light. When the car gets closer it will recognize the object and then continue. I mean it mimics basically what you would do as well if you don't recognize an object near the roadway.

@@teslajl4593 my point was more: This is not phantom braking, since the car does not brake. If you hear the brake pedal pump, then it's phantom braking and that's basically gone from FSD. There are extremely rare events where it actually hit the brakes hard and not just "take the foot of the accelerator".

@@RubenKelevra I understand and it makes sense. I just came back from a 170 mile road trip. All highway. FSD the entire time and no phantom breaking. And I was thinking… that’s real nice.

On the narrow roads like that, I find that phantom braking often happens when there is an intersection or a driveway that isn't noticeable from a distance. Also, when the road has a lot of patches from potholes, I think the discoloration makes the system nervous. There are several other things that cause the system to slow, so it’s difficult to blame it on any one thing.

Yes. I do get some comfort knowing what situations to watch out for. Always makes me nervous having it happen with a car right behind me. But the phantom breaking is a few mph, not like the old breaking on the highway where you could get rear ended.
