Update as we close out 2024 winter - It's been holding up since the repair so far. I'm at almost 80,000 miles. During the coldest period this last winter, it did make some odd noises (like pinging/crackling) when it ran on the coldest days, so hopefully not an indicator of impending failure. But, so far, so good.

I just had my heat pump fail while in service for trying to figure out why my 2021 model Y is getting power limit (speed reduction) warnings after supercharging. I haven’t been able to do proper road trips because of this for 2 years. I’m working on a video about it this week. Love my Y, so I hope they eventually figure this problem out!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm dealing with it now and facing about the same quote from Tesla. I'm afraid to get their real quote and more so, to see how long it will take them to fix it since here in Sweden, there is a strike against Tesla and it's -14C outside. Perfect timing, ha ha ha. I'm glad that you got yours fixed though.

What is the actual fault? Surely it can be repaired without replacing the whole unit? A third party repair shop should be able to take it apart and have a look.

So what was the actual reason for the failure? Have they fixed this issue in newer versionsof the heat pump and super manifold?
@JohnVanDeVoort
@JohnVanDeVoort Жыл бұрын
They didn't state a failure. But I have the old one and plan to disassemble it to see if I can determine the cause of failure. I did ask if rough road conditions contributed (since we have some rough roads with frost bumps in the winter). Tesla service technician stated that this wasn't likely. I did see some other posts about operating heat pumps in extreme cold climates. My car checks that box, since I drive in negative temperatures (up to -30 deg C) in winter months.

They have had a bunch of different problems, from self destruction of heat pumps because of the cold to manufacturing errors and so on. They are replacing tons of them. A lot of them only a few weeks old. Tesla should just have checked with companies that know how to build heat pumps and especially how it works in cold climates. But they always think they can do better than others and, well, no.

There’s litteraly piles of heatpumps and manifolds in dumpsters at Tesla shops in Norway now, mainly from Y’s from Berlin since october to january. Brand new ones, failing 1-10weeks old. Apparently a manufacturer error of some sort, some claim it to be the pipes. Would be interesting to hear what caused it on yours.

It is very unfortunate to have such a high repair cost so shortly after the garantue expired. But on todays Ice cars you can fear on nearly all for timing chain or belt problems at this mileage and you are between paying half of your bill if you're lucky and you heard a rattling sound fast enough or paying 3 times your bill if you haven't had any warnings and just a complete engine failure. I have experienced both, so i would like it more to be able to drive without heat than to cannot drive at all (and of course also have no heat or even seat heating while waiting for towing service)

@JohnVanDeVoort
@JohnVanDeVoort Жыл бұрын
The warranty is 50,000 miles. My car had 58,600 miles at the time of pump failure. I don't recommend selling before warranty expiration, but may consider it (with other factors, such as how well the chips/computer hardware are staying updatable) if I make another new Tesla purchase. That said, I'm definitely keeping this car as I have full self-driving beta (I bought FSD in 2020, before it doubled in price) and wouldn't want to spend current FSD price to add it to a new purchase.

My 2021 vehicle is currently in the shop for the same issues you mentioned. In addition, my main computer needs replacement due to camera problems. The total cost is approximately $5500, out of warranty. The labor rate is $250 per hour, and they only offer a 1-year or 12,000-mile warranty for the parts replaced. This experience has made me reconsider Tesla as a maintenance-free vehicle, as there seem to be serious quality issues, as evidenced by others' videos and forum posts. The biggest concern is that you can only get service at a Tesla dealer, and I don't have trust in their service. These issues started shortly after I had my windshield replaced at the Tesla service center. I'm thinking about selling my car and returning to ICE age 😂
@timh5887
@timh5887 5 ай бұрын
That is not a "heat pump". It's the A/C compressor. Looks like they sold you the Super manifold and the Octovalve unit. Keep those parts, because there are some non service components on it you can't buy separately. All 6 actuators on the front side are not a service item. You also have 3 temp sensors on the front. I'll bet money they didn't diagnose anything and sold you the complete Super manifold with the Octovalve as a CYA. Glad you got it fixed. $1K is super high for that repair. What is their labor rate ?
@JohnVanDeVoort
@JohnVanDeVoort 4 ай бұрын
You're correct about the AC compressor vs. heat pump. I checked the invoice and it was stated as such. They didn't break out labor hours on this one, but I had service last month. Tesla is currently charging $215/hour for labor at the service center nearest to me (Maplewood, MN).

I pushed on that several times. The car is outside of the 50,000 mile standard warranty, but since this system is involved in temperature control in the battery, my thought was that warranty for the 'drivetrain' would cover it. Unfortunately that is not the case. Since the goal of my channel is to provide information about my overall Tesla experience, I will include both good and bad experience. Although service was great, Tesla's non-warranty coverage of this relatively early major component failure wasn't the best experience. I want to help make others aware. It's a great car and my experience may just be a one-off.

I actually made a comment in the video that I edited out of the final version similar to that (about lack of quality). What I added is that hopefully after the third production year, and also adding heat pumps into other Tesla models since the Model Y, that quality of the heat pumps should be better with more production experience. I'm crossing fingers that that is the case and that this new heat pump will be better quality than the original one that failed.

You have three years right to claim an original error, and this is clearly an original error since so many have had the problem in the same time and Tesla issued fixes for it. Depending on when you bought the car, the seller have the burden of proof for six months (until april 30 2022) or two years (after may 1 2022). Read the law and also read more at Hallåkonsument and Konsumentverket, and use that together with the articles written about the problem, and if they do not comply, then go through ARN.
