One of the long term affects of this that I have not seen discussed much is the harm done to Tesla's ability to attract the best talent. Tesla just fired an entire department that was inarguably the best in the industry. Why on earth would anyone who is high value talent want to go work for someone who has shown a total lack of appreciation for industry leading talent?

There is more to the firings than we on the outside can see. Elon is an impulsive child and if someone stands up to him, he throws the whole department under the bus.

100% . I work in the industry (not related to charging), and I know people who have worked there as well. Based on their expierences, and this latest example, I wouldnt consider working there at all. Layoffs are for sure part of the industry, but they are usually done somewhat logically, and there is some effort to maintain a positive company culture. From what I have heard, that has been horrible these last couple years at Tesla.

Hey Paul? Take a look around this comment section. Go to 3 or 4 other videos and peruse the comment sections there. His decision that you think is so stupid...is caused..maybe you better sit down. He made the decision because of what has happened and what is to come...caused by an ever growing army of twits, twerps and dipshts that fill the comment sections of every EV video on the largest platform in the world. And if you need more convincing, look for people in the comment sections that are exactly...like...you. Not only is it millions of Anti Musk Super Twerps but its CURRENT TESLA CUSTOMERS jumping on the Anti Musk RoboTwerp Network of Idiots sheepwagon. Hope you sat down. Oh and the worst part? The twerps dont even know what theyre talking about. Its amazing, and pathetic. They will destroy the company..or heavily damage it and turn around to me and say "See? I knew Musk would screw it up."

I have been a follower and fan of Elon's work since 2010 which led me to defend many of his highly questionable decisions over the past 4 years. For those of us following from the beginning it was easy to look at his great early work and give him the benefit of many, many doubts believing that his goals were noble. I can no longer do so. Since the payout of the first huge compensation package his actions appear more ego driven and less (if at all) focused on the mission statement of Tesla. The world needed a mass produced truck at a reasonable price and he took enormous company resources to create a polarizing, impractical, expensive and extremely hard to produce product of his ego. He has now cancelled the affordable EV and vaporized the most successful charging roll out on the planet. As he maneuvers for more ownership of the company and massive compensation packages he cuts costs by eliminating the income of the working class employees and raises the prices to consumers. His actions and leadership no longer represent anything noble or remotely impressive. I anticipate it will become harder and harder for him to convince everyone he's the smartest person in the room as we witness his dissension into the simplest of human failures, greed and ego.

I rarely get this angry. When he began planning the Cybertruck...when was that you think? I really dont know but I would guess...ten years ago? Eight at the least I would say. Where was the EV market at the time? Barely was one. So Mr. Former Musk fan, you believe the design was ego driven right Musks former #1 fan? Do you remember the interest level of the Cybertruck when it was announced you could put down a deposit and get on a list to get one? Hey where are you going? Come back..okay. Youre going to make up stories its a rule you have to sit here while I show how much bs it is. So, hindsite being 20/20, when designing the truck..before the market for EVs was even established, do you think he should have designed it to be much more utilitarian in appearance? Cos interest level went through the roof. So....Mr #1 fan...man with fans like you...who needs enemies? Huh? And he vaporized the supercharger station rollout and the whole department right? Guess what Mr. #1 fan? You wont believe why he did it. I want you to go on the wolds most visited site that everyone goes to...oh were here already. I want you to go to 4 or 5 EV videos and I want you to look at the comment sections. You will notice that they will be filled with former #1 Musk fans. I call them the Know Nothing Anti Musk Robotwerps. And I know you are an esteemed member. I clearly proved you dont know anything. So the comment sections filled with the twits and twerps...have you frigured anythign out yet? All these bad things are happening....Oh my gosh...cos of you. You and all the others. Ironic huh? I suppose after the damage is done you will turn to me and say "See? I knew he would screw it up". Thats exactly what you will do. Think about what it is you all are attacking. Think about what happens if youre succesful. The EV market is in its utter infantcy. Very fragile. What in the hell are you people doing?!!

I owned three Model S's in the past. I watched the company go from customer-first to stockholder-first-and-only. I was tempted to order my new photovoltaic system from Tesla until this news came about and it reminded me why that was a stupid idea. You just never know when Mr. Mercurial Musk is going to pull support and rip you, the customer, off. I think the reason he let go of the entire team was to demonstrate his power. Rebecca Tinucci was probably told to lay off a chunk of her team, the team that has continued to out-perform as far as everyone can tell, and she resisted. I think Musk decided to just wipe them all out as a demonstration to the other Tesla executives: "Hopefully these actions are making it clear that we need to be absolutely hard core about headcount and cost reduction" By the way, you know what no one has talked about? What about all of the service people that were laid off? Tesla doesn't have enough service centers nor techs to service the cars they have out right now, and they made it just that much harder to get your car serviced into the future.

If I thought I was becoming a burden on the company, or I was coasting along in a job I could easily do every day without challenging every aspect of what I'm doing, then I probably deserve to be fired. I work in a small company with many fellow employees who make obvious mistakes every day that cause untold overheads on the rest of us. If all those underperformers could be legally let go and we could take time to hire one or two new very good replacements, that would be very good for the company's future. Terrible for those employees let go for sure... but that's life. Their loss is the gain of someone new who can do their jobs many times better.

I think a large part of this was to send a message internally at Tesla (which seems like a big gamble), but there were also a lot of products teased by Tesla for release in the second half of last year that never came to fruition. I think this is a few different things in one: A message internally for layoffs, response to the market towards EVs/belt tightening and prioritize a focus on delivering products again. We’ll see if this works, or if they also end up rehiring some people, but this has happened at Tesla before just not so publicly or extremely to this team specifically. I’m not sure I’m even optimistic looking forward, but any Tesla news is always big news, so my guess is this getting blown out of proportion. Coincidentally Tesla is still probably in the best position to respond and be fine within 6 months so overall changes might not be noticed in the end to the consumer (other than maybe total number of new location roll outs).

When they came out with the new standard that was their death nail. The new Superchargers are all the tech that's needed for some time. They don't need a team to role out the tech they already have. That, and BEVs are on a level streak right now, not a lot of exponential growth is going to happen for a few years.
@starseeddeluxe
@starseeddeluxe 20 күн бұрын
@@anydaynow01 Can you explain what you mean about them rolling out their new standard? My understanding is that recently, every single major car company in North America, including GM, and Ford, have agreed to make the Tesla charging port as the "North American Standard" charging plug. One company refused, but they won't be able to refuse. That means all the cars in North America made in the future, will have the Tesla charger compatibility. So Tesla already WON the game. They won. They have all the companies under their dominion, because they are the owners of the "North American Standard" charging port now. It has even been approved by SAE, and will be an official SAE standard. I am not an expert on these terms, or the politics, or monies involved, but my point is, Tesla didn't need any major new innovations right now, and they can afford to fire ALL of their charging team. Provided that their software can be maintained, they already have control (indirectly) of the entire charging grid in North America. I also saw a vision (just a wild guess and speculation on my part) that Tesla will control the ENTIRE POWER GRID in America in the future. This is because Tesla will be the only company capable of replacing the entire power grid (for obvious reasons).

Well, as an european, I’m happy that here Tesla got to adapt to the CCS2 standard, and not the whole industry to Teslas standard. Here, all the cars, except the oldest ones (who use Type 3 or CHAdeMO, for instance), are CCS2, including Tesla, and everyone can charge on none-Tesla chargers. To put it in other words: unlike in the US, in Europe, Tesla doesn’t rule anything.

Hard to say if that would have even mattered here in the US. The other operators are pretty terrible in comparison. It's possible if everyone agreed to use either Tesla or CCS at the very start, things would be different, but hard to say. America's general reluctance to EV's is the real killer I feel. Tesla should have open sourced their connection from the beginning. It's one of the downsides to being first at things. Once you create something (Tesla creating the 1st mass market connector in this case) it can be hard to change. Similar to our home power grid, we started at 120V for outlets as it was good enough, and our stubbornness to change before it's too late is not a good trait for progression. I wish we would have ditched 120V right away and at the very least went with just the 240V phase to phase.

I thought the reason was obvious. Supercharging isn't a money maker. It was needed to sell cars originally but new stations won't sell more cars at this point. Elon needs money for his Twitter money pit. He just got snubbed on a multi-billion dollar compensation plan from Tesla. He needs Tesla stock to go up. I think if he doesn't get the next compensation plan, he's making sure the Tesla stock goes up to as high as he can go beforehand. That will allow him to either 1) if compensation is not approved, sell much of his stock and disinvest his interested in Tesla and offshoot into separate private companies . 2) if compensation is approved, then he'll have the money he needs and more importantly more control over Tesla.

I think Elon thinks the Supercharger network as is, is so far enough ahead in terms of location coverage that it's ok to put it on pause to focus on what he thinks (due to investor and Wall Street pressure) is the more important thing for Tesla to focus on largely just so the "here's how many cars we sold this Quarter" and thus the stock price numbers can go up. It's really not that difficult to see how Elon is prioritizing trying to make that real and is using the money it takes to keep Supercharger employees paid and network expanding to try to do it. It's fucking stupid but that's what's clearly happening. Has nothing to do with whether or not you think they're real things or not. Elon wants them to be and that's what this pivot is for.

Tesla was opening chargers faster than traffic demanded in a lot of locations. We are producing chargers at a given rate, and let's see if we can find places to install them.

Nobody has demonstrated they can supply the product and/or the service at the price yet. . Maybe he was just fed up with the "Tesla will do it all!" Attitude from others? (Or maybe the "Why doesn't Tesla do it all?" Variation?) . For all we know (just thought of this) there may have been a .... "funding agreement" as part of the NACS conversion which "we" weren't aware of ? Maybe those companies who are "pulling back" became reluctant to fulfill obligations? (Speculation, but possible) . Maybe those companies need to suggest *they* could build the product that works, under licence? . If the object is a ubiquitous network, open to all, (without "monopoly") that should work? The high priced companies could then build for ....25% of current installation cost? While claiming Government incentives? They win. . If the Auto manufacturers take the opportunity, *they* get a branded network, that works, and those same incentives. They win. . The Government gets better value for public funding. They win. . The customer gets (or should get) cheaper charging, with more choice. They win. . Tesla gets royalties, (still *really* good value for the others) they get spare cash to fund the big money products (Commercial storage?) And they still get network expansion.

You see this in the physical site layout and the limited cable length, as well as the voltage/current limits of the equipment and wiring.. so they largely Suck for non Tesla vehicles. I am worried about the ripple effect of this. This could be a major blow to the entire industry. Tesla needed to dominate, even more than they are now to show it can be profitable when EV market share does eventually reach 25%. That would incentivize other players to really make a good push for competition. This action will set that back a ways I feel. As for upgrading sites, it would still be beneficial to upgrade a V2 site to V3, even if you had to keep the same site capacity transformer for a while, or even forever. Not having full load sharing is the main downside to V2, I'd argue almost more than being limited to 150kW if it's a regularly used site. Then at some point the transformer could be upgraded. That 750kVa transformer is what, ~600kW after losses/PFC? That's enough for nearly 3 cars at full rip on V3. Likely fine for an 8 stall site.

As for upgrading the sites, switching sites from V2’s to V3’s makes good sense, even if they are short on power and bit. V2’s share power between a pair of stalls where V3’s share power across the entire site. At that site in the video, the 750KVa is perfect for 8 stalls, but could be managed for 10, but it would require engineering skills that seem to now be gone. But a more typical 8 stall V2 or a 12 stall V2 would make perfect sense to upgrade to V3’s and better share power across the stalls.

@@nallemanstankarochfunderin5962 it's kind of interesting. CCS2 is better in many ways for US businesses that want parking lot charging as businesses often have 3-phase power so a "charger" install is trivial and super cheap to get decent enough rates via AC. But overall the NACS standard was probably better for the US with it's slimmer design if fewer phases on AC because of it's (mostly) compatibility with a lot of installed infrastructure - right up until Tesla did this. Now it's in an awkward spot - I suspect it'll still happen because momentum is there for automakers anyway but it's just making yet another rival standard rather than unifying anything. Abandoning the plan and going CCS2 would be a huge disruption - but with the big advantage that is already used in the EU so the vehicles already are designed with it in mind, manufacturing is a thing and so on. So it may actually be less disruptive to go that route. Doubt it would happen though.
