I'm a 2022 MYP owner. To me it seems that the R1T, Air, and Lightning all worked on the first attempt. That in itself is stellar. It was really awesome that you got to see three different manufactures (other than Tesla) charging. The cables and be swapped out. The layout of the stalls can be adjusted. Overall the fundamental ground work is super solid for other manufacturers. This is exciting.

Being a retired GM Technician. At the time they hadn't decided on the connection issue. GM was pushing an inductive charge paddles. At first the 6kw version was kinda ok. But when they started developing their 120kw version it was a Moster. Even the cable needed to be water cooled 😳. But the only one's that we saying that this would never become the standard. Was us Technicians who were trying to assemble these monsters. Even the engineer's who were designing them finally started to realize it wasn't going to work. As both a Tesla and non-Tesla EV owner I am happy about them opening up the system. It's just a shame that Ford, GM and others are not yet doing what Tesla is doing. WV pushing it off to Electrify America doesn't really count/work, and we see the mediocre outcome as a result.
@kylemccourt663

Yup... already seeing Electrify America chargers not working. On my last road trip I went to a station that only had one of 4 operating and 3 people were waiting. Wound up driving 30 mins back to find another while I was already dangerously low. But I would have lost my day off waiting if didn't make a move or went to the local slow Ford charging station. I knew it was going to be problematic with VW funding Electrify America as penance for Dieselgate. I knew once the chargers started breaking, the support wouldn't be there. Tesla has incentive to keep theirs in working order.

As a model 3 owner i have no problem with opening up supercharges to all EVs. It might need some understanding and patience between users for a while to sort out parking positions, but iv always enjoyed a chat with other EV owner’s anyway. Im in Australia and our state government (NSW) is co-funding installations of chargers with Tesla on the basis these superchargers are opened to all EVs. All Teslas here in recent years have CCS charging, ie dont use the proprietary US Tesla plug so no magic adapters needed. Anything that accelerates EV uptake is good.

I'm sure Tesla will only roll this out to less-busy stations to start, but it should help push EA/EVgo/ChargePoint/etc to improve their networks to remain competitive. @@nc3826 Yup, that cable is painfully short. But to be honest, they were designed for use on Tesla cars. However, Tesla had the intention to open up the supercharger network for years now. They should've had the forethought to make a longer cable.
@nc3826
@nc3826 Жыл бұрын
@@Superman-xr1oh I get the original rationale, of the short cable was to get Tesla drivers to park in a certain way to reach the cable.... Which avoided having an excessively long cable lay on the ground... From A purely logical teslacentric standpoint it makes sense... Elon is a control freak, minimalist.... He wants an open network, but only on his own terms.... Where every EV produced, needs to be configured the same as a Tesla... So in his mind, Tesla is not responsible, for this issue.... But since government funding is involved... Longer cables should be required... Which often makes him change, the direction of Tesla, while he bitches about government interference.... Just look at the DC fast charging standards used by Tesla in China and in Europe....
@rogerstarkey5390

@@nc3826 Guess what? Tesla IS NOT responsible for this issue. If you see a product already on the market, think "I might want vto use that one day", then design YOUR device so that it won't fit, it's not the fault of the other product.
@nc3826
@nc3826 Жыл бұрын
@@rogerstarkey5390 Guess what? I agree Elon IS NOT responsible for accommodating non-Tesla owners, in the USA.... and then the government will not be responsible for reimbursing them.... But Guess what? On your side of the pond.... Tesla was forced to install CCS on its vehicles.... and longer CCS cables on their superchargers.... It's nice to see that Elon can act responsibly somewhere.... And NIO is reported to be offering its much superior battery swapping technology in the UK this year. So congratulations.... So you won't have to waste time reiterating Elon's, myopic point of view. Such as his ludicrously overly optimistic timelines. BTW let's hope we finally see see more of those Tesla semi trucks. That was promised to be on the market about a decade ago. Since the world is not standing still.

I don’t want to be inconvenienced while the other companies figure it out and try to push their own solutions. The Tesla plug is small and elegant, and our chargers just work. Here in Europe is more than a year since Tesla started to open the superchargers to other EVs, and I guess that didn't created much problems on the long term, although I'm not a Tesla owner so I can't be sure 😅. Also there is to say that especially in Northern Europe non Tesla charging network are well developed, and the fact that some Tesla drivers use non Tesla fast charger (since Tesla use the CCS combo in Europe no adapter is needed) helped reduce the problem compared to what can happen in the USA
@KatAdair
@KatAdair Жыл бұрын
@@francescoboselli6033 Interesting…thanks for the perspective. I don’t understand why the CCS charger handle has to be so large…Tesla’s is small, convenient, and lightweight. Since I have problems with my wrists, it takes me two hands to handle that plug. Not a problem with my Tesla. The “taking up to charging spots” is a big issue for us, though. Maybe Tesla can build an algorithm into the app that says if “someone has a Rivian or a Bolt, assume they are taking up two spaces and adjust accordingly.”

I can't lie, as a relatively new Tesla owner (Sep 2022) I don't look forward to this rolling out on a wide level. There is some level of comfort in knowing that I can always find reliable charging during a road trip in my tesla and the charging network was the #1 factor in me choosing a Tesla over some other EVs that I may have thought looked cooler that a tesla. Now when the app shows charging spots available but you pull up and a non-tesla is taking up two spots, I cam't lie I would be pissed if I'm in the middle of a road trip with the kiddos in the car and I have to wait because of this non-tesla taking up two spaces. To be clear, I'm not against non-tesla being able to use tesla charging stations, but I am against being inconvenienced because of it, especially when I chose a tesla strictly so that I would not be inconvenienced when charging during a road trip. They should have worked out the logistics of the experience better before rolling this out widely.

Cool channel and content. Found it from the MKBHD video like a lot of others but you have a new subscriber. I know you mentioned the requirements in the infrastructure bill to be able to access funds (I love this decision) but I really hope that eventually we legislate this fully to standardize both charging and access to charging stations. This is a good start but we need to go further. I couldn't imagine how difficult widespread automobile adoption would have been if Fords could only get gas at Fords and were barred from Chevy gas stations or vice versa. It's just anti-competitive and changing it is going to be a major step in in assuring widespread electric vehicle adoption.

I do hope they go for asking the charge port to be either back driver side or front passenger side so that we can keep short cables.

I'm a Tesla owner and I'm excited about this, it's exactly what the EV industry needs right now. Hopefully it pushes the other networks to improve. I'd love to see the same exact solution on the other chargers (lockable adapter ala Magic Dock).

Some of the Superchargers in central NJ lately have introduced very significant price discounts for off peak!! For example, the WAWA just off Route 9 on King Georges Road is just $0.17 per kWH from midnight I believe to 10:00 AM. Also at the Shop-rite on Route 35 in Perth Amboy. (Use the savings to have some Taco Bell over there during the charging session!) Great stuff!

What you needed to do was move more to the right, so that your charge door wasn't as much in the way. (You also had your F-150 angled to put the charge port door more in the way, so you could have angled the other way to make it even a little better.)

Put the charging ports behind the back or front license plate instead, like they use to do (filler holes) with gas powered cars. Much less likely to be any danger of getting run into nowadays.

24:00 here in europe when Tesla started the opening there were lot of charging issue with some brand, updates were done on both side. It is true that the ccs protocol is very complicated (XML frames over TLS using IPv6 over PLC), other charging network also have issues at the beginning. so you should see less issues in US with Tesla opening.

Tom, Yesterday I was at our local San Jose VW dealer lot and they had more than 40 unsold ID4s ! Their horrific infotainment and charging software with Electrify America was one of the reasons I canceled my ID4 order! And I did it twice. I planned a long-distance Road Trip and realized that it takes MORE stops and longer charging times with BEVs such as Toyota and ID4 than Tesla. And the experience of charging is also seamless as you showed in this video. It's amazing how unreliable the software is on Electrify America and they are owned by VW!

Canadians can’t use Tesla Superchargers in the USA, no. I installed the Tesla app, added my credit info but no Non-Tesla Charging button became available for me. Tesla’s FAQ also states that for non-Tesla charging to work, your account needs to be from a country that has the feature enabled. Canada is not on the list.

In a different vein, I have owned my Mach E for two years and wished someone had provided an in-depth video on ownership and how to maximize range in the COLD months and the HOT days of summer. I now make it a point to educate the curious on this reality when asked about my experience, the cost of charging at home vs. on the road, as well as the range. If you've done such a video, I'd love to get that link so I can share it and allow you to better articulate those kinds of answers. I appreciate your videos and share them often, keep up the great work in educating the rest of us. And BTW, thanks for your videos on L2 chargers well ahead of my Mach E purchase; I was completely overwhelmed before I saw them. Cheers mate.
