The speakers in the LR are FAR superior to the RWD version - it's absolutely amazing!! Stalks don't make any difference - you soon get used to it - as Elon says, the best part is no part I love the Highland, but waiting for maybe Juniper but definitely the Model 2

@@tdtesla thanks for the comment. I think it really depends on where you live in the world. I think if you live in the USA honestly, the indicators are not a problem at all as most driving is straight and then just a left or right turn. however, in European countries like the UKUK, we have so many small and mini roundabouts linked together that the target is always moving and the buttons then change orientation from left right to side-by-side to upside down so it is a bit more tricky here.

@@MBrownAnd it's not just roundabouts. Many roads, in many countries, are curved, so the wheel is turned when you have to indicate into another road. The US must have most of its roads in grid patterns.

Great video Mark, really enjoyed it! Totally with you re. the stalks, I think it's a huge backward step. I was holding off buying a M3 until the refreshed model came out, and now that it has, I'm afraid the lack of stalks is a deal breaker. I'm so disappointed because it's such a beautiful car. Yes, the indicators on the steering wheel for me is a dealbreaker, I just can’t understand how people say you’ll get used to them because it’s physically completely impossible to use them safely as far as I’m concerned. You either don’t indicate or take your eyes off the road and fumble around for the buttons half way around a roundabout, both situations putting pedestrians and cyclists in particular at risk.

I think is just like the lack of physical buttons for HVAC controls. Yes, you can get used to them, but is it an improvement? No. Will we have to put up with it so that car companies can eek out more profit because there are less parts? yes.

You don't need to initiate a turn single for a roundabout it's right of way. No need to let people know which exit you're taking. 😂 also in the states you're required to turn the signal on 100 feet before the turn so there shouldn't be an issue with the signals on the wheel.

i test drove this for an hour and went around several roundabouts. it's a slight annoyance sure, but if you cross your right hand over the wheel and grab it where the indicators are before beginning the turn, then just pull the wheel into position, your hand is already where it needs to be to indicate out, and it become second nature. knowing which button to press is also easy too - as with a stalk, the correct button is always going to be the one corresponding to the direction you're about to turn the wheel. in the end i felt that the buttons are superior for 99% of driving situations, with that 1% being right turns at roundabouts.
@wensiangfong

the problem is most people don't wanna accept new thing and not willing to try. People like to stick to whatever they are familiar with. It is not that hard to adapt, i been driving it for a month+ i feel it is easier and more comfortable.

Hey, thanks for the comment, but that’s not the case here when we have a roundabout as the steering wheel turns up the buttons are no longer right is up and left us down at the top right is right and left is left and then when the wheel turns upside down, they actually reverse the placement, so it’s it’s quite hard to work out where they are and obviously each roundabout is different in size, so the buttons can be completely different place every time

Great video Mark! Cheers! I see Cybertruck reviewers commenting on the steer by wire making u-turns with only half a lock/turn of the steering wheel a low speeds. Wonder if Tesla are prepping us for steer by wire coming to the other models by removing the indicator stalks? The indicator steering wheel buttons with the reduced turn arc of the wheel would seem far more usable. Steer by wire dependent on 48v low voltage upgrade like the Cybertruck, but no doubt it's coming in the next few years.

I own a 2021 Model 3, and I am so glad mine has a proper turn signal and stalk for gear selection. What a horrible idea to remove that and replace it with a button. People forget to use their turn signals enough already, which causes many accidents. Changing the functionality will make this problem even worse. The reason auto designers went with the stalk is because it is ALWAYS IN THE SAME PLACE. That's important. Horrid idea by Tesla to remove the turn signal stalk. +1 for the blind spot lights, -5 for the turn signal.

@@flyentityThis is the problem, no matter how used to it you are, you can NEVER avoid having to look down at the wheel to see where the buttons are, move your hands to the buttons then do a bit of mental gymnastics to make sure you press the correct button. Test driving the car didn't male me feel any more confident. I love my pre Highland Model 3 and, in Australia at least, Telsa offer the best ownership and service experience. But if I didn't already have a Model 3, I'd seriously look at a used car instead of the Highland.

@@vasil7410 you will get used to it unless you are a slow to adapt. When doing same small roundabout, the position of your steering wheel will the same most of the time, you will know where the buttons are and which to press, i been using it for a month, and i don't even need to think where to press when signaling. There is this situation where after i turn left then i need to turn right straight away into my house. So while turning left my steering is already at upside down position, so i always know the signal button will be at right side instead, n the button to signal right will the bottom one.

@@wensiangfongWhat you are describing is memorising every roundabout, every curved road and every turn you will ever drive on, then hope that you can position your hands precisely where the buttons are, without looking down at the wheel. Worst case, you still have to move your a hand to the buttons. And what happens when you drive on unfamiliar rounds or forget the hundreds of turns you would normally drive through? Sounds like an unrealistic solution to a totally unnecessary problem to start with.

Don't see how it can park reliably forward without one (you didn't demo parking forwards to a low obstruction). The no indictator stalks thing I believe is Tesla’s incremental move to steer by wire since moving your steering wheel all the way around will become unnecessary. But yes, I too prefer stalks myself. Also, the European market doesn’t need them any more than the US market needs them. We have tons of windy mountain roads, curvy freeway interchanges, and, believe it or not, roundabouts and traffic circles as well.

Here in the UK. We have sometimes multiple roundabouts link together, so you may need to indicate five or six times as the wheel is spinning and your travelling 30 to 40 mph, so as I say, it’s not a dealbreaker, it’s just not an improvement of how easy it was before

Thank you very much for a great video Mark! The new model 3 is just so nice, the new design looks so good and modern. I have never owned a Tesla, but this upgrade feels so right. As you say, the suspension, comfort and materials are way better than before. I tried the new Model 3 Highland once, and to be honest, I didn't think the lack of indicator stalks was an issue. Of course, in roundabouts its not optional, but the feeling without indicators stalks feels unique and modern (even if its not an improvement). I really liked the feeling. And yes, we have a lot of roundabouts in Stockholm as well 😋 Now I have to choose between standard range and long range. Thank you for your reflections on that too. 😎 It is likely that you will have around 8,000 Euros less to spend over a period, as you probably will get the money back when you sell the long range version. I would think that the value on the second-hand market corresponds to the difference in the price as new, at least in Sweden.☺ Hmm, I go for the long range!

Good review Mark. The only issue I have with parking - 2023 MY - is going front in to a space as the cameras can’t pick up anything close at ground level however I’ve always preferred to back in and the rear camera does a really good job so it’s a non issue. Indicators are an interesting one and I can’t fathom the thought process to remove the stalks but I’m sure I’d get use to the change and maybe indicate less which may or may not impact other drivers. Doesn’t seem to bother BMW drivers (!) so perhaps I’m overthinking it.

After 2 weeks I tried to drive my old car and I couldn't turn the indicators correctly, it was much worse than trying tesla Highland for the first time. My conclusion is that tesla stalksless system is much comfortable and better for me. You just have to give it some time which is not always possible by testing a car for a short period of time.

Having tested it I think the stalk removal is a huge miss. I do like the new fascia, but the 10% range improvement claim is just marketing, the consumption is hardly any lower than my TMY. A big disappointement was the fact that they did not integrate a front bumper camera and HD radar. I was not wowed by the new inner light strip, I do prefer the previous wood veneer. I did like the seats, sound proofing and suspension.

I jumped from a "traditional" car into my Model 3 and loved the minimalism and novelty of the Tesla. The only thing I didn't like was the speedometer on the centre screen, so I added an aftermarket HUD. But the stalkless indicator has gone to far for me too. And being such a fundamental control in the cars, I would not be comfortable with an aftermarket option. I definitely agree that the stalks need to return (thank goodness the people who make the S3XY buttons have announced that they will be making aftermarket stalks for the Highland Model 3). I don't care a bit about the people in the backseat do the rear display is a complete waste. I know Tesla saves money by standardizing but it would be nice to have the option of deleting it and reducing the price of the car. I suspect Tesla has pushed for vision instead of ultrasonic because they use the data collected to improve the robot project. I am inclined to buy an older Model 3 and just have the rear door windows swapped out for the new double-glaze glass. Best of both worlds.

I agree with the indicator-bashing. However, I think you need to look to the Cybertruck, and specifically steer by wire. Max rotation is what, 170 degrees in either direction? So I think that’ll mean you’ll generally be physically be turning the wheel less, and therefore the buttons stay in the same place relative to your thumb. Would still rather have the stalk though! Its removal doesn’t *add* functionality.

ultrasonics is pretty irrelevant for me especially since parking is parking. I just need cameras and eyes. Removing ultrasonics will cut that cost completely from the car for a function that isn't essential and make it cheaper The lack of stalk is interesting. I can get used to it. But the real solution is simply what the cybertruck has. Steer by wire. So you will never have to do a full 360 on your wheel ever again. I feel like a lot of technology from cybertruck like steer by wire will be moved to teslas existing portfolio. The designs like changing to a yoke wheel for visibility and being minimalist checks out to the pursuit of autopilot.

It’s a shame EuroNCAP concentrates on stupid invasive ‘assistants’ that we all switch off rather than how safe is the user interface for the driver? Tesla would score poorly - dangerous indicators, have to look left to see the speed which, depending on your driving position, could be obscured by your arm.

The lack of the stalks (both of them) is a deal killer for me. It’s fashion over function and it is really dumb. I also cannot believe that Tesla still continues to not have heads-up display. Turning your head down to see the screen is often, but not always, a safety hazard. Making the decision to put the change lane warning lights near the mirrors was a good one (late in coming of course since almost every car has it now!), but no heads up display is plain stubbornness for the sake of what?
