The SR+ is an underestimated car, it is incredible good value. For that price your car has amazing specs and tech on board. I don't understand why everybody is focusing on long range or performance. Also a non-stop 2.5h drive is perfectly manageable and incredible relaxing to road trip in a safe way. SR+ for the win!

Well this made me feel good - this is the exact car we have ordered for my wife's company car (if it ever arrives that is - been on order for a while). Can't imagine we'll ever do 1,000 Klm trips in it - but 300 or so - should be fine. Of course there are limited superchargers here in Greece at the moment (well 1 actually) but more are coming apparently.

Korean EVs are better VFM, typically £10k cheaper for similar or better spec and 7 year warranty. The only advantage Tesla offers is efficiency because they are two technology generations ahead of legacy car makers - though Kia/Hyundai are always hot on Tesla’s heels and the Classic Ioniq is probably more efficient. The Tesla supercharger network benefit is diminishing fast as Ionity and other fast charger networks are rapidly installing all over Europe - check out Bjorn’s reviews of Audi GT and fast charging speeds that thrash Tesla. Since the legacy car makers are waking up to EVs, Tesla have to look to their laurels cause technology is quickly copied as Samsung have shown with smart phones. But car making is still new to Tesla hence their massive problems with quality control on body assembly. Musk has always known he would have limited opportunity to make hay.

@@ellistreloar2047 I don't agree. The Supercharger network is at least 5 years ahead of any competition and is crushing them long term. Reason: Plug and charge, instead of plug and pray. In the Audi E-Tron GT Video it was shown again, that stalls that don't deliver as promised are a normal thing for non-Tesla drivers. RFID chards that don't work, app, here, app there, not working chargers, non-existing chargers(north of Trondheim) The 4680 cells with the Berlin Y will establish the usual lead again Tesla has battery wise. I don't see anyone catching up any time soon. I don't accept RFID chargers, I only plug and charge Supercharge. Therefore, only Tesla's are an option for me. On top of that, Tesla has the best charging prices in Germany without subscription. 37 cent/kWh instead of 79 cent/kWh. I don't accept subscriptions either. So Ionity multiple fails for me. I will never ever recommend anyone a EV with only Ionity support for friends and family. What I will do: Get my dad a Berlin Model y with 4680. Get Model 2 for the rest of the bunch from Giga Berlin.
@ellistreloar2047
@ellistreloar2047 3 жыл бұрын
@@kasmopaya2676 Yes, yes, yes! I agree with all your comments about the Berlin Y. I hope that they will not have the usual Tesla body assembly quality problems and it will likely be my first Tesla. I was planning to get a Model 3 last year when I joined a Tesla owner's online group and discovered lots of complaints about bad fitting doors, windows, panels and trim. With the windows shut I expect to keep dry in a car - we have a lot of rain in the UK! Regarding Tesla charging network, yes, it is the best right now but others are catching fast. RFID systems will quickly be replaced by wireless bank card payments and solve that nonsense. Also, the average UK car journey has consistently been less than 10 miles for the last ten years, so frequent DC fast charging is relevant only to road warriors with frequent journeys exceeding 250miles. The majority of EV owners charge on cheap overnight rates at home. My current energy cost is less than 2p/mile with occasional public DC charging . If I used only public DC chargers it would be more 10p/mile.

@@ellistreloar2047 Interesting numbers, thank you. In Germany it's the same, most people drive only short distances on average. BUT, if you drive a long distance, it has to work flawlessly. I am prime example, 64.000 km on my 2009 Corsa, but sometimes I travel a long distance. Even with the small city car. So a VW E-UP can not do, what my little Corsa did. That is a fail for me. Tesla's can do what my Corsa did. Therefore, easy choice for my next car, actually ordered my first Tesla, a Model 3 SR+ just a few days ago, delivery this month. I also had concerns about production quality and therefore waited for Berlin Y to resolve these issues. But with the MIC made in Giga Shanghai, this issue is gone. They are top-notch, not even BMW mini can keep up with the quality in China from this new factory. I expect the same, or better from Giga Berlin and will order a Y when things run smoothly. Indeed, so many new technology's going to happen at Giga Berlin, will be production hell 2.0. They need a lot of luck to get a quick ramp up. (Elon expects up to 2 years)Also, the reason I ordered a MIC Model 3 right now. Relaxed waiting... Have a great weekend.

@@HermanWillems Hi there, in Germany we got about 10.000€ from the government if we buy a electic vehicle. Meaning when i sold the car about half a year later, i got 5000€ more than i payed for it. I knew this right away when i bought the car, because people where doing this since 2020. Meaning the model 3 was far cheaper overall than my corsa. Never i my life was driving a car cheaper, let alone a Tesla. Getting my 3. Tesla next week and 4. next year. I actually saved up for that Tesla and never bought a expensive fossil for that money. Could have bought any sports car i wanted when i bought the corsa, but i did not. Way to expensive and boring shit... But a Tesla is really a step forward in the right direction. Easy decision. By the way, the Model 3 turned out to be far better than i thought. An absolute animal on the German autobahn. Unbelievable performance and grip. Best car ever. Right now i have 60kWh LFP SR+ M3 and its an efficiency monster, beating Model 3 P with 21" on long distances. 300-350km range with 150km/h speeds on the autobahn. Nobody can beat that for that value.

Quality content as always. One question: Can you add a column for consumption including charging losses. That would represent the concrete costs for such trips. Should be quite easy to calculate as you propably get an invoice for every charging stop. Only uncertainty is the charge still in the car after the 1.000km. But most cars have a accuracy of 1% so it should not be a problem overall.

I think these problems aren't only with Teslas on external charging stations. That's why people stick to superchargers. You go there, you start charging everything works. In germany I had a guy who was sure his Tesla was faulty because of low charging speed, but actually it was just the chargers that promised like 150 but only delivered 60-70 and he tested twice until I told him to just go to the supercharger. No surprise he got the better charging there. Some chargers make really unpleasant sounds too here in germany, hyperchargers which should give up to 400kW but they only deliver 150 often enough. Mostly used by people with cars that charge really fast who need those hyperchargers, like the taycan, then they only charge as fast as a m3 at a supercharger. It's a bit sad.

I recently did a 400 mile (~650km) trip (San Francisco to Los Angeles) in 100F+ (up to 110F/43C) outside temperature and found it interesting that the car (M3P, pre heatpump) didn't ever really try to cool the battery below about 50c (122f) for the whole trip. This seems consistent with your experiences where it doesn't actively cool the battery when it doesn't truly need to. When I climbed a hill near the end, there was an ICE car on the side of the road every few hundred feet which had overheated, and one even one was in the middle of a lane blocking traffic on the highway.

HI Bjørn, as usual very good video and very good insight on real world usage of an EV. Just on the point of actual distance reported by the car, versus real distance (or at least, Google maps reported distance), how trust worthy is also then the reading of consumption? I know that reported distance and reported consumption are directly related, but even so, could the consumption be also also effect for other reading errors (like for example electrical current)? I'm asking such, as in ICE cars, I see that both errors in reported distance and consumption (yes, measuring electrical current, is quite more precise and than measuring volumetric flow). Thanks and keep on the good work, as you can be proud of turning me around misconceptions on EV's!!!

Bjorn, I’m glad to see your emphasis of consumption AND charging speed in this video. Your recent German car reviews generally praised charging speed BUT their efficiency is very poor compared to Tesla and Korean EVs which are 4 year old designs. Have VAG, BMW, MB engineers been asleep on the job? Samsung have shown how easy it is to copy technology. Why are the German cars so inefficient?

My 2020 Model Y charges fully to 100%. A warm battery is a happy battery. Can't wait for you to get your hands on a Model Y. I hope that M3 has PPF? New EV owners in the US experience similar charging issues with EA chargers in the US. Another great road trip.

I did Italy to NL in single stretch with the SR+. Consumption low, did extra stops and breaks just to relax. 19 hours straight 😬 But yes this is a good car, even with limited range long trips are absolutely no problem.

"Unable to charge, charge station not powered" weird message for a feature. Either it's a bug or maybe the charge station has a feature with Tesla to disconnect at 97%? I was able to charge to a 100% not long ago, but on a Dual Motor version. Would be interesting to know what software version they supposedly changed that...

Thanks for all your tests. Just choose the fastest charger available when most convenient. If possible avoid tesla v2 if a higher is available. I think we are testing cars not charging network. One thing I forgot was LG vs. Panasonic battery SC, so it's of note that some new Tesla models cannot utilise more than 150kw anyway.

Impressive and I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but we need to remember that this test was done basically in ideal conditions, where Bjørn was able to pick always the next best possible charging station to ensure staying at the optimal charging curve. And the warm weather ensured low consumption. Add in to the equation some real life with winter/cold weather, non-SC charging stations and longer distances between the chargers - this would mean that he would need to charge to a higher SOC and leave more buffer for variation, and charging would not start with such high power. End result would be quite a much different.

I did a test after this one and it turns out that I would still do it in 10 hours even if the temperature was only 10 degrees outside.

@@bjornnyland I don't doubt that. And of course, to carry out tests like these and to make them comparable, it's best to try to get the optimal result. However, you do have quite a luxurious situation in Norway with the SC/3rd party charging network you have there. Like you said it yourself, why would any Tesla driver pick any other DC charging station over SC; Teslas pre-condition their batteries and only very seldom you have any problems with SC stations. This means that a Norwegian Tesla driver can really hammer it, if he/she wants to minimize the travel time. However, in many other countries the reality is still so that SCs don't cover all the places where people travel and then they need to use other commercial DC charging stations. Combine this with a longer distance between the stations and sub-optimal weather, no pre-conditioning due to 3rd party charging, cold weather/cold battery, a need for increased safety buffer --> and suddenly one needs to charge to +90 % SOC before hitting the road again --> duration of a charging session increases a lot. Hence, in real life, driving 1000 km with a Tesla or any other EV can (and often will) vary from your result drastically. This needs to be kept in mind by everyone looking forward to get their first EV.

Sincere question: has Björn or anyone else tested if the stated consumption values in EVs board computer are actually showing true consumption? In an ICE car you fill up to full, drive and then fill up to full again. Take filled volume and divide by distance traveled to get fuel consumption, l/100km. The diff between reality and board computer can be quite big. I guess you could do similar with EVs if you keep track of how many kWh you charge. It is interesting to know if Teslas seemingly low numbers shows reality.
