But how can you then win with an EV if speed limit is the limit and you count charging/break? I like the comparison but it basically means an EV can only be quicker if it charges faster than filling up the gas car, right?

@@SimonEllwood That‘s what I meant! You will therefore never reach a 9h benchmark with an EV, which is fine for me as I need bio breaks. So I think it means that the M3 LR is already a match as we need to take bio breaks…

Tesla will be upgrading and of course installing new 300-350kW maybe a possible v4 SC in the not to distant future.... then the MS plaid might charge as fast to 70% as fx. the Ionic 5 charges the same kW. Gonna be interesting.... since you are right it is more inefficient, but charges way fast than M3 and even MS plaid.

A pity that the new chargers are kinda slow in comparison to Tesla own SuC. So yeah it is more satisfying to actually prove that the calculations are correct. That is awesome. 20-25 minute difference between the Model 3 LR and the PHEV (fosssil) foor the 1000 km challenge is nothing. Essentially it means there is no difference between this EV and a fossil car for a real world long range trip. It may be even faster because you can charge while you eat when you stop for food unlike a fossil where you have to "fill up" either before or after you eat. Seems like a TeslaBjorn race might be in order. Maybe a rematch with the Porsche 911?

Hi Bjørn, I have exactly the same TM3 LR 2021 (82kWh). In my territory, I usually have "rapid" chargers with an output of 50 kW. I found one interesting point every time I started chaging, it usually starts at 40kW and stays for about 15 minutes between 39-41kW, then jumps to 46-49kW. Are there any tricks or methods for preconditioning the battery before charging at 50kW DC charger? I think it's a cold gate ... even in the summer for a 82 kWh Panasonic battery. In winter it should be more pronounced :(

Oh dear, you’ve raised some doubt about the eTron time, Bjørn…you’re going to have to redo it the the same conditions as the Model 3 LR 82 kWh. ;) Our experiences yesterday, highlighted the importance of, true, efficiency, and charging speed. We pulled into Darts Farm, Exeter UK (SR+), with eight 150 kw chargers. It’s an extremely popular place, where people seem to go for a day out, and buy ‘home-grown’ produce, local meat etc, and chill in the vast acreages of land, walk the dogs and enjoy the sights etc…there was a circus there, so even more cars and people. Tesla owners, drive through the carparks of ICE vehicles to the chargers. It’s usually busy, but keeps flowing. Yesterday had brought everyone out, and there was a constant arrival of Tesla’s, resulting in a consistent queue of around eight to ten vehicles…sat in 31 degrees centigrade…hot for us. If the cars weren’t so efficient, and couldn’t charge as quickly, it would’ve been a nightmare (each car had to wait around 10mins for a free charger). This is what makes Tesla’s, along with the supercharger network, so efficient and doable. (Tesla have another charging station planned for later this year, at Exeter…with the relaxing of ‘lockdown’, it can’t come fast enough;) More stations are in progress around the country, and they’re adding to existing areas. Which makes you think there’ll be a tipping point at some stage, where any serious ev manufacturer will regret not making much more effort in building up reliable, easy to use, charging networks for their cars?

Would you not recommend people going for 800v car instead of 400v, given when the infrastructure gets even better, the 800v cars will get even faster times? I would love if you try the Ionic 5 again when a trip can be easily planned on only 800v chargers to see the difference in maybe 2 years time.

If you subtract distance but keep the low consumption values of ‘slower driving’ you are helping the car/ time twice. I now there is a bigger difference with slow traffic than the slightly lower consumption but you are still helping the car anyway. But it’s totally ok, you ended up only subtracting 3 minutes
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. Lower speed might reduce consumption by just 5-10 Wh/km. And for that stretch, it would mean 5 kWh less which takes 1-2 minutes to charge.

In Norway 9h because of the 110kmh speed limit. If you live in another european country with 130 limits then 7h 42m. Bjorn's tests are always simulating best case scenarios. Unfortunately in most real life cases, charging infrastructure isn't built optimally along your route. Some of today's evs show that it's possible to move almost as fast as an ice car. This means the only real limiting factor is charging infrastructure.

@@Scrap-press Although, you do have to take into consideration that higher speed increases consumption. So you can't just subtract the higher driving speed from the total time, because in reality your charging stops would also become more frequent and longer with higher driving speed. Actually, I don't think you could go any faster (total time) even if you drove faster precisely because the total time is the sum of driving speed, number of charging stops, length of those charging stops and of course charging speed. Consumption also doesn't rise linearly, but it rises more and more the faster you go. I think 110 kph is quite close to the sweet spot. Even if you were driving on the German Autobahn, the average driving speed couldn't increase that much or you would actually just get worse total time because of the increased consumption.
