Great video showing how easy this is to do! The tools will pay for themselves after a few rotations. Some chain store tire shops will rotate for free, but they might not use a jack pad and they use pneumatic guns to loosen and tighten the bolts. They probably won’t use a torque wrench, either and I’ve heard that these air tools might warp the brake rotors. I always give my wheel and tire a good washing before reinstalling. It’s so easy!

Thanks! So there is no difference between the RWD and AWD in terms of frequency or process? I have about 7,500 miles on my AWD TM3 now. Was going to take it to my preferred tire shop, but I have to check if they have experience and the jack pads. I have one from a brake caliper cover kit. It looks like you can get away with just one if you don't use those jack stands. A friend of mine reminded me that it's important to check for even tire wear and get your wheels aligned if you notice any uneven wear. How did yours look?
@MTNRanger5 жыл бұрын
I'm going to cover that in my next video that talks about tire wear. RWD tires wear more in the rear and probably need rotation more frequently than AWD. My tire tread was 8/32" new. At 6500 miles, I had 6/32" in the rear and 7/32" in the front. At 13,500 miles, I now have 4/32" in the rear and 4.5/32" in the front. If I didn't rotate at 6500 miles, I would have to replace the rears by now. I'll probably be buying new tires in late summer before they reach 2/32". I would recommend buying (or making) 4 jack pad adapters and keep them in the car for emergencies, inspections, tire shops. I'll be covering the adapters in a third video.

@MTNRanger5 жыл бұрын
@@hx3169 I recently talked to a mobile service tech and asked him about tire wear. He is seeing anywhere from 20k to 35k miles. A lot depends on wheel size, tire type (all season vs summer), tire treadwear rating, driving style, highway (less wear) vs local, AWD vs RWD, tire inflation, etc. Mine are all season Michelin Primacy MXM4 235/45-18 and brand new come with 8/32" tread. Most tires come with 10 to 12/32" tread, so already, the tire is at a disadvantage. I'm looking at the Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus and the Michelin Crossclimate+. Regarding the foam, it is supposed to help with noise, but I have heard people haven't noticed much of a difference when they switched to different tires.

The Tesla wheels are unidirectional as far as i know. You switched front-back, you did not ''rotate'' the wheels. Is that what they do in the service centre? Have you observed it your self or asked them of the exact procedure?
@MTNRanger4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I watched the mobile service do my first rotation. Yes, they move the wheels front to back on each side. They use one floor jack, which makes cross mounting impossible. There is confirmation of this by other owners. teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/tire-rotation-frequency-and-pattern.140909/

Good video, MTN Ranger. I didn't know we can lift both front and rear wheels by using just one floor jack at the rear. I had been using 2 jacks on my last 2 rotations. But not anymore. Thanks to you. However, I think you set the torque to 139 lb-ft because you went 9 lbs above the 130 marker. The actual marker is where the pointer (looks like an escalator) touches the center line. The manufacturers print the numbers slightly above their markers so the whole numbers are in view when we set them. If the numbers are right at (across from) their markers, the handle will block half of them and make them hard to see. Quite a few KZbin channels have good instructions on how to set the torque wrench. Keep up the good works!

Don't think it was a good idea to leave the jack stand under while u lifted higher....if the car drops due to your jack rolling then it will most likely do some damage. It might even puncture the battery and cause a fire. Hopefully others see this and avoid. Take the jack stand back out, lift until ready to stick it under again. Another question, is it a thing to lift the car on one corner? When the service guy came to do your car did he also lift on one corner? I plan to do my own rotations and I only have 1 jack. I rather buy another jack if lifting on one corner isn't standard procedure with the Tesla mobile service.
@MTNRanger5 жыл бұрын
Yes, one jack on either front or rear jackpoint will lift the whole side. Maybe it’s not visible in the video, when I use jack stands, there is a jack pad adapter that fits the jack point. So there is no issue of puncturing. Using two floor jacks is an option too.
@mana11115 жыл бұрын

How can Tesla change tire rotations from 6,250 miles to 10,000 to 12,000 miles? This makes no sense since tires on a Tesla will wear sooner than on most other vehicles, because Tesla's are so heavy. Seems to me that Tesla extended the rotation mileage just to make their cars more maintenance free. But there's nothing that special about their tires, other than the tread pattern and the noise dampening foam. Also, I'd do a cross pattern rotation instead, as that would make the tires last longer than front to back. Yes it's more work but it lets your tires wear more evenly.
@MTNRanger5 жыл бұрын
I totally agree on the rotation interval, it makes no sense to be over 10k miles. I did cross pattern on my previous cars, but the Tesla mobile service guy recommended front-to-back. My wear is pretty even from left to right sides. Just front to back due to more wear on the back due to RWD. There is no issue from me if someone wants to do cross pattern for their situation.
