I went with a used Model S. It's been a dream of mine to own once since they came out and I just don't really like the way the Model 3 looks. Something about the shape and the proportions are just all wrong for me. Same goes for the Model X. I also have children and the extra space will be nice for weekend trips. I might even get a hitch for my bike rack. To anyone out there that hasn't driven a Tesla. Once you do, you might buy one immediately. They are amazing to drive. The other thing that was a big decision maker was the screens. I really love the screens on the Model S. The fact that navigation shows in the instrument cluster area is just so awesome. I really enjoy the album art on there too. And the 17" screen is just nuts. I really love it. I will most likely splurge for the MCU2 at some point for the 4G and responsiveness but I'll see how it goes with the MCU1 for a while. It's really cool that stuff like that is up-gradable. My decision was admittedly not as practical but I fell in love with a car and that was the end of it. Better to buy what you like than settle on what you don't.

I was looking at 2015 Model S but went with 2019 Model 3. I’m very happy. I love the S and I think it looks better and is the BOSS but simply too big for my needs. I also wanted full warranty.

In my head there’s two problems with buying a Model S vs Model 3 in 2019. For the same price of around 38K you get a new model 3 with 4 years / 50k miles warranty, and 8 years / 100k miles battery warranty. Or a model S with no general warranty and 5 years battery warranty. So for 38K you got a car that if goes wrong in the first 4 years you’ll really have to fork out. And the second point is insurance. Might be not the same for everyone but a model S is almost double to insure for me in the UK, and that’s with 7 years no claims. I’ve looked at multiple cars and comparison web sites / direct quotes. Model 3 ordered in July still waiting...

A model S like the one driven in the video (like mine) has an 8 year unlimited battery & drive unit warranty. Better than the model 3 battery warranty limited at 100k miles so its worth getting that fact right. Insurance in the UK with direct line approx £500.

@@morten93 The value of the unlimited km warranty depends on how much you drive. We've got a 14 Ford Escape (Kuga in the EU) and it only has 67k kms (shared by 2 drivers). I'd definitely choose the Model 3 because of the general warranty, the full battery warranty (100k miles is more than enough), and the 0 battery degradation.

never ever buy a first gen car. Always wait for the facelift. Many errors occur in early building process. It's a generell rule for ALL Brands and cars.

@@ranzigerkaefer sorry but are you saying the older used tesla isn't worth buying until 2017 and up, or that any model 3 is worth buying? the 2017 +S vs the 2022 model 3 are both around the 5 year mark so i assume (not sure though) that both have worked out some of their faults by that point? what do you think?

Great review; a question I have been debating for a year. I have to say though that if I’m honest with myself, I have to go with the used Model S. Here’s why: appearance of a Model S is significantly more professional, and just plain sexier. The room inside the cabin feels spacious and definitely has an “I made it” feel vs the Model 3 that feels more cramped youthful and more claustrophobic. The trunk in the model S is far more useful especially considering the hatchback. I could actually transport a decent size OLED Tv home from Best Buy in the Model S, and there is just no way of transporting the same size tv in a Model 3. In parallel to that, The Model S might actually be able to transport some camping equipment and small furniture, or perhaps a canopy for the beach or soccer games. I think my mind is made up, Model S it is when my Mercedes C300 lease is up in three weeks.

Tesla only lose about 10 percent range even at over 200,000 miles. Making claims like losing 15 miles of range after every 25,000 miles is not only false, but also scare people away to switch to electric car.

It's not a linear loss rate vs time. It's exponential decay in the first 30,000 miles then levels off to signififcantly lower rate loss. You are right about 10% at 200k miles but the 15mile loss in first 25k is likely tue - not false.

I was loaned a 90D for 2 days while Tesla fixed a dent in my Model 3 Performance . Literally couldn’t wait to get my 3 back, it’s like getting into a go kart after driving an old Jag!

The S will not loose battery capacity linearly as you said in the video. Rather it looses range initially and then stabilize.

Batteries don't degrade linearly as you described. The SR+ has slower home charging than the S.

Where are you getting your range loss data from? It's typically 5% loss after the first 50.000 miles and another 5% in the next 150.000 miles. Range loss slows down as the battery ages. If you take good care of your battery, then you may see just ~2% loss after the first 50.000 miles and ~6% in the next 150.000 miles. The new Tesla battery pack, going into production next year, will go 1 million miles, even abused.

Zoltán Kárpát pRange loss is Teslas own figures. Their batteries are crap! Hence why they just spent 218 million on a business with much better battery tech. Cheaper EV models lose 25% of there capacity in between year 1-2' New batteries are desperately needed if EVs are to keep progressing

@@James-oo1yq she said it was for that car and it might have been stressed. So far tesla have show a lot less degradation than other brands. Model 3 cells seemed to be even better and the new Maxwell tech should be even better again.

@@James-oo1yq That's funny. Nobody "needs" better batteries. If it was up to traditional car makers, they would stick with current battery tech for another 20-30 years. Tesla has the best batteries currently, but they still want to improve, that's why they bought Maxwell Technologies. They perfected a supercapacitor manufacturing process, which can be applied to Li-ion batteries. Add to that Jeff Dahn's research, and the end result will be a 1 million mile Tesla battery pack. Current Tesla battery packs can only do about 350K miles on average, 700K if you really take care of them. The new packs will do 1 million miles with abuse.

Aluminum is terrible with salt, it removes the oxide layer by pitting and results in the the Aluminium corroding and pitting. Trying putting Aluminium saucepans in the dishwasher.

Great review. The Model S rear wheel drive traction issue can be solved with good tyres. I dont use energy efficient tyres on my Model S as they dont give me the traction I require. The Model S, in my opinion, is one of the best RWD cars in winter conditions. Having said that I have proved in the past that a BMW M5 with 4 winter tyres is better in the snow than a 4x4 with 4 summer tyres.

I have a rear wheel drive 2015 model S and have NEVER had any traction issues and haven’t heard others having any issues. I also have a lot more room in the frunk than a 4WD.

As a 2016 Model S 70D owner i would have to agree. Granted, it all depends on your preferences. I went with my 2016 Model S 70D because I’m a demon for speed. Although the acceleration is faster in the newer model 3’s the speed is nowhere close to the older S models. But again as i said it comes down to preferences. I don’t commute far plus i need more space for me and my gf to go on hikes and scooter riding. If you want luxury with speed, comfortability, and performance and don’t want to break the bank go with the model S. If you like technology, the fact u gets more mileage, care about the warranty, or want all the new bells and whistles then I’d recommend a model 3.

Regarding diminishing range, it appears that range decrease slows down after the initial first 5% or so. In other words the loss of range is not lineal and you are bound to lose range the quickest in the first year after which it slows down.

You neglect the most important thing about charging is the range per unit time. If you want to add 100miles of range for instance then the Model 3 will be twice as fast as the S.

@@sooocheesy she did talk about charging but the point I was making is she didn't mention that the Model 3 had higher efficiency, crucial for longer distance travel. This means that even if they charged at the same speed, the Model 3 can do more with it. (it can also charge faster, which she did mention)

In respect of both the Micro (Tesla) and Macro (EVs) your In Depth Product Knowledge is unparalleled, equally your ability to communicate that knowledge in a suitably paced video is brilliant. So.........How am I qualified to comment in this way? Well, I have owned a 2015 Model S (85) in Midnight Silver Metallic for ~ 3 years. But I really NEEDED to know for myself how the Model 3 stacked up. So I bought an SR+ in Pearl White. Yup, you were testing my exact cars 😳 . I did this so i could decide, based on FACT and experience, not just reports or opinions of ‘others’ . I have had the Model 3 now for ~ 2 months (6k miles) . So? Which stayed and which didn’t? Which won the overall right to stay on our drive? Well, unexpectedly , they BOTH did, on the premise (or tbh) the promise of “His n Hers” 😇 , i was able to get away with it. 😂 Bye Bye Range Rover. But now i want to drive the Model 3 as much as i want to drive the Model S. Perfect. Mrs C now adores the Model 3 , but thinks the S is a bit too big for her in town. I had one of the very first 230 1014 Model S cars imported into the UK. Apart from traction concerns (no 4WD), my battery failed at 47k miles, while driving at night overtaking in the fast lane going up a hill. Lit hazard warning lights and glided to the hard shoulder and waited for a pick up truck. Tesla did an amazing repair under guarantee in 8 days when hiring me "diesel" replacements YUK! But they rang me almost everyday to give ma a progress report so West Drayton Tesla service quality was 5 star.

Very good and fair comparison. As a 3 time Tesla owner ,P90DL and 2 P3D’s I agreed I prefer the 3 right now and X as my second choice in utility . Now when The revised Plaid version arrives ,which I have been awaiting , the X may become My first choice!

It was such a tough decision but I went with the used model S ( 2015 p85d ) . Same price as a model 3 but I get unlimited free supercharging, sun roof, ludicrous / launch mode, surprisingly a lot more space, and so much more. Also there is waaay to many model 3s on the road now a days which makes the car feel less exciting then when it was rare to see. I also still have over a year and half of battery/ drive train warranty and also purchased a 5 year full warranty from a third party company that covers almost anything that goes wrong for an additional $5000 Canadian.

Really great review, but I would also be very interested in the total cost of ownership over say three or four years for these two options if bought today (ie used S and new TM3) and how that compares. It’s hard to predict the residual values of a used electric car, but perhaps they are fairly strong which means the total cost is a good comparison.

Good grief - if there's not a clear impetus for the features of one over the other, then why wouldn't you buy the Model S??? A new Model 3 has got a much greater potential for rapid depreciation than a car that's done the fastest part of its depreciation!

I had the option to go with either and landed in a 3. Imo the 3 is much more fun to drive and something about it feels like the future. We have 2 kids and we all fit in it just fine with plenty of storage space for a stroller, diaper bag, etc.

If I had 1 child, the Model 3. It's less cumbersome around town. However, with 2 kids the Model S is superior. Especially in rear wheel drive guise. The space competes with a wagon or SUV. It also has a more luxurious ride and a bit more cachet. Both are desirable though and better than the rest. That includes the Model X.

There are so many things wrong with this video. 1. The Model S only had paid supercharging for, I think, the 2018 model year. Before that, it was free, and since 2019 it's been free. 2. The build quality of the Model 3 is pretty far behind the Model S. The Model S has an alcantara headliner and leather everywhere. All the buttons are either rigid plastic or metal. The Model 3 buttons are quite scratchy and cheap, and everything feels a bit more flimsy. IMO in terms of quality the Model 3 compares with a Mercedes C-Class and the Model S compares with an E-Class (although it's a lot bigger, especially its boot). 3. The ride quality of the Model 3 is also rougher than the Model S. Maybe the Model S she drove didn't have air suspension, but the new ones have air suspension that is now adaptive. The Model 3 uses regular coil suspension (which is still great, don't get me wrong). 4. You get charging adapters for free in the Model S. So yes, you can use public chargers. Which even a road-tripping Model S driver would use about once a year, if that. 5. The rear headroom is similar in both cars, maybe the Model 3 even gets the edge. But the Model S has much more comfortable seats and the rear legroom is like a standard wheelbase S-Class. (The Model 3 is above its rivals, such as the Mercedes C-Class, in this respect too.) Both are great cars so it's a shame that so many things are incorrect and misleading. The Model S is above the Model 3 in all objective respects, but that's to be expected since it's 50% more expensive even when fully equipped.

Batt degradation is fastest when new and tapers off, you can't just extrapolate linearly as loss of capacity slows over charge cycles.

I prefer the Model S as there is little difference in price between a low spec Model S and a high spec Model 3 but for me the big difference is that lift back boot entry in the Model S which somehow you avoided showing.

I was confused on which one to go for I knew model 3 has more warranty while model s has got lifetime FREE SUPERCHARGING I live near a supercharging station therefore I would be driving the car for literally FRRR therefore I went for an old Model s as I hate the interior of model 3. I don't know about others but I just don't like a single screen so called minimalistic interior. Plus I don't think there will be a problem fixing it for me as I have worked on these things and know about tech.

For me the front angle of the M3 is the worst part. There’s something “off” with the windshield design that gives it a bulbous-pod type look. I preferred the look of the prototype to the production model.

I love the option to go "Car Camping" with the model S. Put those back seats down and you have a really decent mobile hotel room for two adults in the back there. It's just wonderful to be able to travel so cheaply and conveniently.

I love the way the Model 3 drives...but it's no looker...the Model S is a MUCH better looking car IMHO. Also, whilst I found the back seat in the 3 comfy there is very little space for your feet under the front seats (due to the high battery filled floor)..I'd be interested to know if this is the same in the Model S? I note that the new Porsche Taycan has a 'foot garage' in the floor (battery) to get round this very issue👍🏻.

Main issue with used cars is the insurance coverage. Once the car crosses 10000 miles there is full insurance coverage in Europe.

Enjoyed your comparison. Thank you. The base SR+ Model 3 is sadly over £40k (with Tesla's £990 delivery fee) rather than "well under" and therefore subject to the luxury vehicle tax, currently five years at £320.

Good for a car reviewer, but what about when they go wrong, there are loads of door handle, MCU and drive train issues that are hugely expensive to fix. With so many cars with warranties close to their expiration, and only being to buy modular replacements from Tesla, the costs can be horrendous.

Your extrapolations about battery degradation are false and only based on assumptions..: Most tesla loose about 4-9% range on first 100.000km and then range loss hovers and stays at 10% capacity loss (for high milage Model S cars)

Same here. P85+ for my wife. Best vehicle purchasing decision ever. Have a Cybertruck preordered for me. Will help my daughter get a Model 3 for her next car. Never going back to gas.

Honestly: The Model S is already slightly too large for most european roads. The space it offers it takes up from the road. The Model 3 is just so much more compliant with the existing infrastructure, though: It's already around the larger cars.

I don’t feel the Model S works enough in the UK as a comparison for people who are looking for JUST a good deal. The S certainly makes for a good value option, but it’s so much bigger that for people who really don’t need or can’t make use of the added practicality, it’d be far too cumbersome. It’d probably be a different story in the US though.

this assumes that battery degradation is linear. I don't think it is. I've seen graphs where it dips steeply withing the first year or so than gradually decreases or flat lines after that.

I went for an end-2015 S85D, iso new 3 SR+, for the same money. S85D on 2015 already had AP1, which is very good, the M 3 just didn't had enough space for my 3 daughters. My S has free supercharging, but it shouldn't mean a lot since money spent with a payer's M3 is not worth the mention. I got the CCS converter for 300€, for enhanced carefree fast charging options (hope to use it 2 or 3 times...). The S85D would be a fast car with half the power. I Just wanted the S air suspension but with adaptable dampening. I hope the depreciation of the S is lower then the M 3 (after the first year of the M 3, to make fair comparison). That depreciation will still make the total ownership of the S85D more expensive than a 2015 BMW 525d fully spec'ed... but to me, it's well worth it.

Did anyone else notice the interior/road noise difference between the cars? Most noted at the 4:55 to 5:00 period. Striking. Could it be related to the camera mount?

Model 3 road and wind noise, I've heard, is a lot louder. But Model X is really quiet, I don't know much about the Model S and 3 noise that much, as I haven't had any experience with it, except for a lap around a neighborhood in the S. I noticed that there wasn't a lot of road noise or wind noise though.

@DrivingElectric great video , where was this filmed ? roads looked quite nice, would love to drive them. note: the 75d has 259HP Used ms prices are very good , i picked up a 2014 P85 for £35k has 54k miles, 416HP, 600NM torque , 0-60 3.8s all the options + free supercharging . battery was well looked after by previous owner , up to 66k miles now still seeing 265 mi at 100% soc . 8 yr unlimited mileage drive train and battery warranty.

Some of the 75d are 'uncorked' a software update which takes 1 second off the 0-60. After 2016 i think.

The Model S looks just soo much better I like the wide stands of the S. I don't like the "Mazda 3" look of the model 3 :-( I wish it had the similar Model S look in a little smaller package.

Super review. Covers so many things I was looking for. Depreciation of the model 3, which would be from new in this case, will probably exceed the used model s, so I’m leaning to the S.

i loved the video and review, but i'm not so sure about that HP amount of 415 in the 75D, i thought i remembered seeing that amount , in a P85 !? which I have. but recently the battery was replaced with a 90kw battery pack under warrentee. makes me wonder what my HP is now...

I wouldn't trust an S out of warranty. The prices have dropped significantly on the used Ss, but I think they need to drop a bit more before it would make sense over a 3.

The battery and motor still have 8 year unlimited mile warranty, where as M3 is limited to 100k.

@@rkan2 but if you guy a 2016 model S that means in 3 years you could be SOL whereas if you buy a model 3 today you could go 5 years no problem, maybe even more unless that's not how the model 3 warranty works?

I own a soon 6 years old 128k mile Model S 70 and the 13miles per/25k is not accurate. I still have over 200 miles range when it was new the range was 220.

I'm not sure these facts have been checked. The headroom is better in the 3 by quite a bit & the battery degradation is not linear (there are people with over 100000 on the clock and less than 3% loss with the model 3)

Thx for this particular comparison as I'm kinda turned off by the continuing paint and panel alignment issues in currently produced cars and, frankly, that front end design on the 3 just rubs me the wrong way. I think I would be more pleased with a used model S as it's got that little upmarket buzz. I've seen prices that I consider reasonable with relatively low millage.

Bad comparison. That Model S in the video, even used, is about twice the price of the Model 3 SR+. Compare it to a 2013/2014 Model S, which is around the same price.

Andrew Petrella paid $41,500 after utility rebate for a Performance Model S with warranty in near perfect condition directly from Tesla’s website. I was a pre-unveiling M3 reservation holder with a mid range config for $51,700, but cancelled my order in favor of buying a used Model S. I love the Model 3, but it was a no brainer to buy the $10000 less expensive P85+ over the Model 3 at the time. I am completely aware of what I am not getting (AP/Sentry, faster charge rate, faster MCU, added nimbleness, greater efficiency, bioweapon defense mode) but I spent 10 grand less to get a roof rack, more room, dual displays, larger frunk, openable sunroof, free transferable supercharging for life, 21” turbines, Performance motor, carbon fiber, power hatch, option to add 3rd row seating, higher foreseeable resell value, arguably better styling, ride height adjustable air suspension, a more premium sound system, & presenting door handles. My friend who has nearly the same M3 config I almost bought tells me I’m really missing out on the autopilot, and I’ve heard nothing but good things from those who have it and use it, but my wife I like to drive and aren’t ready to give up the wheel quite yet. I added Garmin mini cameras to make up for Sentry mode, and feel the MS is more than nimble enough for everyday driving. The Model 3 is a sportier feeling car better suited to attack the track, while the Model S has a smoother ride due to its longer and wider wheelbase and air suspension. Some of my observations are subjective and of personal preferences so in no way am I downplaying the accolades the Model 3 brings to the world. I will be helping my daughter buy a Model 3 as her next car, as she doesn’t need any of the extras that my wife prefer in our Model S. To help bridge the gap in MCU’s Ivam prepared to buy a new MCU for around $3200 when it becomes necessary, but I have been very impressed how well the 1st gen MCU’s have been able to continually receive updates to feel fresh and current- mind you, not including all of the wonderful things a newer MCU can implement. I am also not going to benefit from certain OTA features lacking AP, but hopefully I can retro fit it if Tesla offers it one day. Oh, and to bring filtration to something closer to BWDM, I’ve swapped in a HEPA cabin filter, though, my fans don’t spoil up high enough to create positive cabin pressure like BWDM does, but I’m completely okay with that. The little bit of money saved going with a preowned S is going towards a preowned 3 for my daughter and towards the Cybertruck that I have on preorder. We are a Tesla family for life. In short, new or used.. S or 3, you can’t pick a bad Tesla!

I have a non-Tesla EV and I agree with the Tesla folks, those of us who have thermal-cooled batteries aren’t experiencing that amount of range loss. 13 miles per 25k in that car seems very high. Maybe they were constantly charging it to 100% everyday? Either way I have 27k in my i3 and have less than 1% degradation, and it’s no tesla battery.

All cars built after October 2016 have the Full Self-Driving hardware. But the FSD computer came out in April

The Tesla hardware and software has changed at a very fast pace over the past 3 years. If you want the latest and greatest technology buy a NEW Model S or Model 3 or Model X If you can be satisfied with older technology then buy used.

As usual the Tesla drivers say that 'Most' drivers can charge at home!! This is rubbish . True if you can afford £50,000 for a car you probably live in your own detached house with a frontage where you can charge. The rest of the 80% of car drivers live in less auspicious houses so have to charge elsewhere

When are the mileage range test from the government going to be more accurate to real life use. Even the new standards are not realistic. People should not accept shoddy information from the government range test. We need accurate information to make a buying decision and compare vehicles.

Yeah, I've heard that Model 3 has a really big issue with wind and road noise. I only know that Model X has really good wind and road noise control, but I don't know too well about S or 3

The 3 I drove was quiet but my S is noticeably quieter at freeway speeds, though, I’ve seen “wind noise reduction kits” available for sale on the aftermarket, which may help reduce wind noise. Sill though, the Model 3 is quiet enough from what I remember.
