Earlier in the year I had a parking brake fault flash up. 2016 MS 85D (just passed 250,000 miles about a month ago) I was waiting until we could get it into the workshop but one morning the near side wouldn’t release. So trailered it to the workshop and we had the rear brakes apart. It all seemed ok, but there was a lot of muck inside the servos. So they were thoroughly cleaned and fresh grease applied. Bench tested and refitted with new o-rings. The handbrake then worked ok and I noticed a small improvement in efficiency! However we couldn’t access all the diagnostics and the fault warning persisted. A couple of months later, the car went in to Tesla Bristol for a replacement hv battery fuse. So I asked if they could check the handbrake. The found a broken wire and had a new connector in stock, so it was fixed for the price of 1 hours labour.

Hi Matt, thanks for sharing. I do hope you get your beloved MS home soon. Your rear discs look like they need a bit of a clean up. I know when I wash my MS that the rear discs then stick overnight (handbrake on with wet discs) and when I drive away next day they release with a thunk. That is my cue to find a quiet piece of road and stomp on the brakes a couple of times, so the rust gets cleaned off the discs. I am sure that this is not new to you, but for the benefit of any readers who don't do this, they risk the rust setting in deeper and eventually new discs are needed or at minimum a skim. Ironic really, Teslas needing new discs even though their brakes hardly get used at all!

My discs were only rusty on this video as the car had been sat unused for about six weeks waiting for the insurance claim to get sorted and then parts ordering at the bodyshop before I took it over to them.

In the service mode, there is a brake burnishing sequence. It will guide you, look for it and follow the instructions

2013 Model S in Canada. Has had two brake jobs in 10 years. I use the “brake hard on a back road once in a while” calliper clean up method.

Sadly that won't work with the separate parking brake calliper. It's a maintenance item that needs maintenance.

when did you get the Model S back from the body shop? Or have I missed a video.

I haven't. This video was filmed 4 months ago when I was taking it to the bodyshop.

Am I right in thinking that Tesla combined the parking and braking functions into one calliper on the Model 3 &Y? That way the brake shoes get operated more frequently. They are still a maintenance operation every two years though.

Which lubricant did you settle on for the actuator gears? I'll be attempting to replace the pads next month and want to lubricate the actuator during re-assembly. Thanks for the video!

I ended up just straying in some white lithium grease. Because that is in an aerosol with a stray, it's easy to squirt it in.

Good advert for a full brake service at 5 years?
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 11 ай бұрын
Yes definitely. And the main brakes really need a lubrication every year on the MS.

What do you think of Tesla moving to NO column mounted controls - relying entirely on moving steering wheel buttons and swiping the screen ?

Getting ready for fully autonomous? Tesla are known to cut parts if it saves money. They did it with the parking sensors, yet took nearly a year to get the vision alternative working. But I do wonder how much it actually saves and if these cost cutting measures are worth it. Take the stalks for example, they are going to lose some sales because of this move. What has it saved them £200?? Put the price of the cars up by the price of the parts. No one will care.

The Tesla workshop manual states the park caliper bolts should be torqued to 57Nm

Span? Spun surely? Good video again. Did they use a lot of Mercedes parts for suspension and steering on early M S’s?

Plus-Gas overnight should help, re lube I think there’s someone on UToob covered it

I don't know about the suspension, but on the early Model S like mine, the steering wheel stalks and window buttons are Merc parts. The stalks are horrible. They get really notchy/clunky and feel like they're about to snap.

Will these part work with 2016 model x. The part no for those pins are 1013298-00-A but couldn't find a reference between Delphi and OEM

Yes, if your MX uses the same Brembo brakes. I'm pretty sure they do. Autodoc is a good source for parts or just looking up bits and part numbers. Just enter the Tesla part number to find the correct aftermarket part.
