@RoadUser_Motovlog3 жыл бұрын
One good reason to NOT having switches on a touch screen for wipers, turn signals etc. : because those are safety devices. You don't turn on windshield wipers for aestetich reasons, you use them because you can't see anything and you need to get the water away as quickly as possible, and to to that you tap a lever right at your fingertips. You need to flash the cars in front of you if they're gonna crash into you and you want to make yourself visible before making an evasive maneuver, and to to that you pull a lever that is also at your fingertips. You need the turn signal lever to quickly tell the drivers around you that you're gonna change position on the road to make sure nobody crashes into you, to do that you press a lever that you find -you guessed it- right at your fingertips. Those are all safety related features, they need to be reliable, you need that tactile feedback to MAKE SURE you're pressing the right button, and that is something that a touch screen will never be able to do. I ride a motorcycle, and motorcycle have a big ol' red killswitch to turn off the bike in case of an emegency and to flash other cars/bikes you literally have to pull a trigger that is located a few millimeters from your left index finger. You need those features to work almost instinctively and that's why they better belong on an old school, loud, mechanical switch. Sorry tesla, i love your stuff, but that's a hard pass for me. (also because i'm poor but that's a whole other argument)

The reason Formula 1 cars use the yolk style wheel isn't because of the tracks. There are actually quite a few hairpins in F1. The reason they use these wheels is actually because they use a 180-360 degree wheel lock (depending on the track). This means that you turn the tires fully in one turn of the wheel. The reason it's not normally on cars is because this is way too much for the average person.

@aaronbounds13363 жыл бұрын
49:08 - yeah, you could drive to lots of places. It is likely that you will end up stopping, for one reason or another, somewhere along the way. So, why not supercharge, even if it's just for 10 minutes while you go to the bathroom. Benefits on the micro and macro levels: batteries weigh a lot and the fewer of them on the vehicle, the more efficient it is; the less it costs to make the vehicle, the more batteries are available to put in other vehicles, and for every trip that is not using a 100% charge (which is almost all of them) you're not carrying around all of those extra batteries. As recharging times get closer and closer to the time it takes to fill up a gasoline vehicle, which they are getting pretty close now, maximum range is less critical. People get all bent out of shape over range on electric vehicles when it is completely the case now that range on many gasoline vehicles is the same as or less than range on electric vehicles. It's the infrastructure that is the real issue. Infrastructure is getting better and better, especially with Tesla. As people's expectations more accurately align with reality, they will calm the eff down and realize it's just fine. It is pretty common for gasoline vehicles to have a practical range before people feel them up of between 300 and 350 mi. Some are less and some are more but on average that same is reasonable. And yet nobody is going to aftermarket mechanics and auto shops and outfitting their vehicles with auxiliary fuel tanks so that they can get that range up to 4, 5, or 600 mi. It's simply not necessary. It's not necessary because gas stations are ubiquitous and feeling doesn't take very long. The supercharger network is well on its way to being ubiquitous. Also, imagine if your vehicle could be fueled up where it parks every night. How often would you need a gas station? Only for road trips. Once people can rationalize that and truly internalize it then range just isn't the massive barrier to electric vehicle adoption that the naysayers would like it to be.
@AOTanoos223 жыл бұрын
In todays age the i3 has no place, but keep in mind the BMW i3 came out in 2013, wich was way before Tesla and EV's for that matter were mainstream. So the Range extender may have been adequate in 2013 as battery tech was way behind back then and range anxiety was a real concern. The I3 has a carbon reinforced chassis and basically all its parts are recycled, thats why its still that expensive. But yes, in todays age buying a BMW i3 is questionable.

Also the Range extender version is US and Japan exclusive now and the latest version i3 is from 2018 (with no range extender option). 1:07:29 - You're not wrong for mentioning all of these topics but short kind of a downer. How about offering some of the current benefits and upcoming solutions to these problems that are already being put into practice. Version 3 and higher superchargers have a much higher throughput than previous versions of the supercharger. Also, all of these people have the ability to know, before they get there, the occupancy level of each and every charger at that particular station. So, if they show up and complain about waiting in line for a long time, that's on them because they knew about it before they made the decision to go there.

Compatibility is great, you can still use chrome extensions, and it's more memory efficient. The sandboxing features like Application Guard is great for security purposes, the vertical tabs and collections are useful, and as a web developer, I use it for debugging and testing my code. I'm a big fan, and this is an absolutely great thing for Windows users across the globe. They are given a competent, GOOD browser right out of the box. 56:49 - MKBHD! Less superchargers than gas station. Oy. Maybe this was just a sensational comment you made to illustrate a point but the only thing that I took from that is a fundamental misunderstanding of electric vehicles. Odd coming from somebody who's had one for so long. Could infrastructure for electric vehicles be more ubiquitous? Yes. Could range in electric vehicles be a little bit higher and would that in turn esuage people's hesitation toward making the switch to electric vehicles? Yes. It's a whole different ball of wax though. You know as well as anybody else who drives an EV that the overwhelming majority of recharging happens when the vehicle is otherwise not in use anyhow. High 80s percentage of charging is not Supercharging. That translates into a high 80s percentage of the time - 89% last I was aware, what you have referenced as a problem isn't a problem. Look, I understand that things could be a little bit better in a few major categories but to suggest that there needs to be as many supercharging locations as there are gas pumps is overboard, there's more of a problem now than there actually is. Now, it may be the case that when all vehicles are electric there are quite a few more high power DC fast charging locations that are charging speed range. Time will tell with that. And my town of 100,000 people, there is one supercharging location. I drive by it daily and rarely do I see anybody at all, once I saw it being half full. Of course I don't sit there and monitor it 24/7 so it might be the case that it's used more frequently than I suspect but I've been driving by the same location for several years now and it is seldom used. Locations where there's a much higher density of Tesla's but it is also the case that in those pretty wealthy areas, most people with Teslas have a place to charge overnight, so I did not know how much of that charging is "needed".

Rob Mauer on Tesla Daily posted a video of him driving Model S Plaid. He seemed to have no problem with the yoke steering wheel. He was using the palm of his hand to do U-turns.

(Near end of video). If there is a line for Tesla chargers, you don’t have to wait. You can charge at any charger- the ones that other EVs have no choice but to use.

Loved the episode guys just wanted to pitch in about the i3/ smart car debate. Smart do have both the fortwo and forfour as pure EVs and Kyle from out of spec that you had on has both the I3 with range extender as well as the fortwo ev. Might be cool to get his perspective on them 👍

Motor trend showed that it wasn’t on regular road. They were able to get 1.98 sec only with 1 foot rollout subtracted and use of VHT prepped surface. It still is the fastest production commercial car out there which I wish was Tesla would have said.

I’m a long time mkbhd viewer but I’ve always kind of avoided this podcast because it didn’t seem all that interesting. I guess I was wrong. This was a really good podcast. Keep it up!

I agree for the most part about your thoughts on the i3. However, no one buys a BMW new they usually lease them and BMW almost always have a good deal running. (What I'm saying is no one ever pays sticker on them) So that's the only reason you see them on the road. By the way BMW just announced that they discontinued the i3 for the United States. If you want to actually buy an i3 you buy them used there are tons of really good deals out there. I would only recommend this car as a second car they are great around town but if you need to drive out of town this is not the car for you. To be honest this would be a great car if the range and charging network was better.

40: Right, the Plaid Day "One More Thing" was actually Two that may eventually overshadow (i.e., bigger than BD) 4680, due to the newly realized efficiency features being applicable to all battery formats. I.e., Ultra-light/efficient, carbon-wrapped motors, plus octovalve enabled battery thermal management that enables fast charges & repeated fast discharges without "winding (as in whew!)" the battery.

Range anxiety and the number of super and destination chargers are concerning for those of us in the middle of the country. In TN, there are 3 Tesla superchargers and two destination chargers in the entire state.
