I'd love to do a comparison with a 2022 Taycan Turbo S, which has more power and better tires than the prototype lap in 2019. I suspect the time gap would drop somewhat, but for now it's pure speculation. Discussing it on Taycan forums, it seems likely that Porsche could produce a Plaid-like version of the Taycan, perhaps as a 'Weissach Package' - some more aggressive aero along with a decent bump in power, especially 'overboost' during laps rather than just during launches, and maybe a switch from the Michelin Pilot Super Sport (used in the test) to better rubber? Is there a market for such a car by Porsche, considering you can go out and buy existing models which are much faster on the track?

By the time Porsche comes out in response to the plaid, tesla already has the plaid + ready for production. Oem players really need to start poaching tesla engineering talent. @alexandreleite48772 жыл бұрын
@@ericship8383 hey, power to weight has strong influence in acceleration, but weight itself is more important for cornering, stability and braking. And power, aerodynamics and rolling resistance defines top speed. It is a balance. And the power curve determining the average power effectively used is really important. Electric cars have a flawless power curve.This is why, generally speaking, Electric cars are faster in a drag race than ice cars with the same peak power. If you take three identical cars, same weight and appropriate gears and the same power curve, the Electric is faster, then the turbo and then the naturally aspired. The key is the power curve, the power in lower rpm for é cars is higher. But normally the dynamics of a lighter car goes better on a racetrack.

They didn't qualify it by saying "in a straight line" or only on a drag strip once you've preheated the battery. Musk even gave several interviews where he said the Model S was going to be faster round a track than a supercar. If you're going to make a claim like that, you open yourself up to people testing it, so Tesla can't complain about videos like this. The Model S is an astounding vehicle. In a straight line, it's like driving a missile. It's colossal size and weight means that it'll always be at a disadvantage on a track racing against smaller, lighter cars that can out break and out corner it. I agree with you on the vague claim. However I own both cars. Be it an older 2016 GT3 and a 22 Plaid. Totally different weapons. Kind of like Bruce Lee vs. Rocky. Tesla will never eclipse the history Porsche has on track. It's Porsche's DNA. Yet Porsche still hard pressed to find that blinding speed in a line and he utility too boot. I totally give this one to the GT3 actually my fav in the stable. The new Turbo S might even be better, However the Taycan is not quite there yet on a long circuit. Lets come back and compare when the Roadster arrives. Musk is indeed a car guy, and to win will just hire some P car folks to dial in the Roadster. One commented the Pano was a better comparison, I agree. As for ICE cars, the writting is one the wall, as sad as I am to say that. Hyundai, killed the ICE development dept. Dodge killed the Hellcats. Ford will be next with the Vette the last to go of the domestics. Porsche will figure out how to make a 911 EV spank all commers is my estimation. They just don't need to quit yet. The Tesla battery developments on the horizon will shed hundreds of pounds off the EVs in time. Porsche would be wise to use that tech as its open source tech. Palgurism is not a bad thing.
@WestCoastSupercarsandClassics3 жыл бұрын
This is a great conversation, thanks. Porsche is gonna stick with an ICE 911 for the time being and is doing the Cayman and a 918-style car as EVs. The 918 thing will use the Mission R platform most likely but it'll be expensive. I'm guessing it'll come in close to 7 figures, and it'll be stupid quick all round. The Cayman/Boxster is supposed to come in at around 3650lbs, RWD to start. The batteries will be made by Porsche in their new factory and will feature silicon Anodes. This is from Porsche's top brass, I think less than a month ago. The 911 still has such a loyal following as an ICE car, I suppose they'll end up making a hybrid probably to give it the bragging rights in the 1/4 mile?? Who knows.. I mean people are still yapping about manual transmissions being the bees knees and all..

But Tesla isn’t ahead in batteries. Toyota is. And no plaid will challenge a super car, as they get faster, and faster….top speed and acceleration wise,, simply impossible for a plaid…410km/h is the new 300. Tesla always does 1/4 mile, which is too short. It’s an outdated, American measure, that nobody in Europe uses. My grandma can jog that distance fairly fast. Anyways, Teslas are the new Prius, every unemployed howdlum has a model 3, and every Middle Ager angry businessman has a plaid for a little over 100k thinking he’s rich. Th3 handling of these cars is the problem. With Hybrids and EVs from all manufacturers dominating the market, South African Elon, with China made cars, isn’t even considered American if you ask people, even though technically it is.

There are even tons of articles from mainstream media who straight up lie about anything involved with electric cars and therfore instantly bashing on tesla. The double standard is another big problem which really can't be ignored, just one example.. Car fires. 2 years ago a tesla cough on fire and instantly the whole media went nuts about it, while there are thousands of car fires a day with ice cars .Not long after that a porsche taycan burned down in a garage.. Somehow nobody cared about that too and tesla fans know exactly why. Now you know why tesla fans are very sensible about that matter. And honestly I don't know why you are trying to downplay the achievements tesla made, but you should be thankful because the only reason the porsche taycan exists.. is because of tesla.

@@flash7413 I agree, I have a Taycan, and have held deposits on two Teslas already (decided not to purchase eventually - see my videos on that subject). I like Tesla plenty, I like EVs too. I tell people regularly that it was because of the Model S that the Taycan exists - plus Porsche of course. Personally I don't want a family sports sedan with 1000hp or that speed - it's unusable on public roads - my Taycan is already ridiculously fast and has more power than I need. As a parent, I wouldn't be able to let a teenager or young adult drive the Plaid if I had one - far too dangerous. I think people are wrong when they assume most of us will be driving EVs with 9 second 1/4 mile times in a few years. Not gonna happen IMO. Lower prices, better range, and lighter are the real goals we need to reach for the masses, and the enthusiasts!
@flash74133 жыл бұрын
@@WestCoastSupercarsandClassics yes I agree about the real goals which is ofc hitting the mass market with an overall good and affordable ev, but that's not the point of the plaid any other ev or even ice car with crazy stats. This cars are made to stand out, to be recognized and representing a brand, for tesla its even their advertisement because they still don't pay for any ads. I mean being able to say that they produce the world quickest production car is a very good ad imo. When the first real performance tesla came out back in the day, it was the p85d if remember correctly, it showed the public what evs are capable of when the only other evs were boring nissan leafs or Renault Zoe, which ofc are OK daily drivers but their lack of performance and range really didn't help them to stand out. Now that tesla is know by pretty much everyone they finally can go step by step to produce more affordable cars, which they startet with the model 3/y and soon model 2. Ofc everyone has his own preference, I mean I for example don't need a truck at all and even more so a truck with over 600 hp , yet they still exist and being tuned even more to be raced in1/4 miles which obviously doesn't make any sense. There is no other car out there who gives you 1000 hp for 130 k right out of the factory which also can be easily used as a daily driver, it's a bargain really.
@WestCoastSupercarsandClassics3 жыл бұрын
@@flash7413 Yeah, I understand the marketing reasons for doing Plaid. I think most Model S buyers will stick with the other models though, bc most buyers aren't buying the cars for the drag strip. In my Taycan groups, there are a lot of folks who've switched from Model S to Taycan, and some who have just now shopped between them and chosen the Taycan. The main reasons given are: build quality, driving experience, dealer experience, styling. Most of us agree that the current cars are already more than fast enough for street cars. I think KZbin videos are driving the perception that 1000hp EVs are really that desirable, but I don't think most luxury performance sedan buyers are that interested. That's my read on it anyway.

Again some folks miss the point - they think that Plaid makes all sports cars obsolete and slow. Clearly that's not true, not even slightly, when it comes to the purpose of sports cars to entertain and to rip around tracks. It's partly the fault of KZbin since it favours quick drag races, and not the more complex track dynamics. It makes it appear as though Plaid is the fastest thing on the road, which it isn't. That's the point. Plaid has its place, but it's not the king of the road and never can be.

Well, it might not be the King of the Race track, it obviously can‘t be because of all the well known reasons like weight, aero, tires, brakes. But King of the road it definitely is. You can use its power anytime anywhere, even in urban environments. Try that with any ICE of comparable power and you will most likely go to jail or at least annoy people. With a Plaid you can just go for it with almost nobody noticing. And waaaayyyyyyyy more efficiently. That are the points.
