Tesla Model Y - Better Tires for All Seasons

The Tesla Model Y with Induction wheels has shown itself to perform quite bad in winter weather. The so called all season Goodyear Tires that come standard on the Induction wheels on the Model Y just cant seem to get the right traction on any amount of snow.
I set off to find a replacement set after a treacherous trip to Chicago in a winter storm in the Model Y showed me just how dangerous these tires are.
I had a few goals in mind, they had to be affordable, meet the same specs as the standard tires, and could not be winter tires. I wanted 1 set of tires that would perform reasonably in the snow, and not be dedicated to a limited season.
These tires are perfect for now. I do not yet know about range impact, but they are just as quiet if not quieter.

Immensely helpful! I was just saying to my wife that we need winter tires next year. I’ve had it with the OEM tires for my induction wheels. I cannot believe how bad they are in snow. I was taken back. At certain points in this snow season my old RX8 rwd was better than the Y. Thanks again!!

Its unbelievable how bad they are. The best feeling I've had so far was that little bit of doubt I was feeling while white knuckle driving on the highway was all put to bay as soon as I got a chance to try these tires in snow. This car should be great in snow, given weight and highly sophisticated AWD system. Just goes to show how critical tires are in overall winter performance!

@@EdVera I don't have confirmed numbers, but I know for sure there is a reduction in range with these. Its not substantial, but on our last road trip I noticed higher consumption the whole way. I'd say somewhere between 5 and 10% higher consumption at highway speeds. Other than that, these tires grip EXTREMELY well.

Thank you very much man! I know exatly how it feels driving stock GoodYears on induction wheels on Model Y in Toronto, Canada in the winter! They are horrible in the winter and they burn like crazy even with completly non-agressive driving style. My OEM tires are done at 45k km (28k miles). So I was looking for a set of all season tires but Michelin Pilot Sport 4 AS that are the ones that I was looking to buy are like double the price from those Vredestein Quatrac Pro. I was a bit sceptical but you helped me to make a decision so I am gonna get them too and will probably make a video with my personal review. Thanks again for this video!

Great review. I'm very interested to see a follow-up on these tires in 6 months, when you've had a chance to drive on them in dry & warm weather, and them compare them to the stock Conti tires that came on the Induction wheels. I'm looking at all-weather tires for my LR Y with Induction wheels, but it's almost pointless for me since I live in Southern California and it never rains here and is always sunny & warm, and the times I would go up to the mountain and hit some snow is maybe a handful of times in a year.

I just picked up dedicated winter tire and rims for my Model Y performance. The KZbin algorithm is good :) incase anyone else is shopping, I went with: front: 255/40/20 Michelin alpine pilot pa4 .. 20x8.5 rims Rear: 275/40/20 " 20x9.5 rims (both rims for 64.1 bore and 5x114.3 bolt pattern, 45 offset) I wanted to keep the wide rear wheel, add some side wall for potholes and curb rash protection... I haven't seen them yet. Hopefully they come mounted and balanced :) -Ontario, Canada (GTA)

I noticed on tirerack pretty much this is the only option for all weather tires with snow rating in 20s. If you had Gemini wheels, would you still pick the same tires ? Or maybe Crossclimate2’s ? How long did these tires last for you? I loved how they performed in the snow and overall however I am now having to change them out on my Tesla Model Y with 20” induction at 19k miles. With only 19k miles they are worn down to 3/32, the tires are less than a year old. Tire Rack is honoring the warranty and since these tires are on back order I had to go with the Michelin Pilot Sport all season 4, which were much more expensive. Living in PA, our winters can be brutal. Fingers crossed that the Michelin will perform well this winter and keep our Tesla Model Y chugging along with any snow situations we may encounter!

Having two sets of rooms and tires is certainly more expensive but has a lot of benefits as well. I'm sure you are aware of this living in a snow climate but having snow tires is hugely beneficial in cold temperatures. It's not necessarily the tread that is important but rather the tire compound and the performance when it is below freezing. Major safety and handling improvements with winter tires in the winter time.

I've run winter tires for years and love them. If you're going to keep the car for years, and I usually do, having the steel rims and winter tires is my choice. Better traction in the winter, long life tires in the summer. My winter tires normally last 40k and my summer tires go 80 to 90k miles. With my winter tires I could out accelerate AWD vehicles with my front wheel drive car when there was several inches of snow. I loved it.

For those who were curious about the range loss of these Tires. When Comparing these to a popular competitor (Michelin Cross Climate 2). The Vredesteins have a Rolling Resistance Rating of D vs a B for the Michelins. The stock Continental tires were known to have good low rolling resistance to help increase mileage. My estimate is that these tires would cause some mileage loss, but still worth the benefit of being able to drive safely in Ice and snow. I guess if they don't work well for summer, you could probably get sponsored by Martian wheels and get another set of tires... Regarding the R241, mine are 8.5" wide with 235 wide tires. The tires stick out further than my Geminis and are definitely protected. I like them for winter. They are painted, not powder coated, but that is to be expected at the price point. Our MYLR with the Inductions is hitting 21k this month. Got the same original setup as you with the GoodYear Eagle F1. Starting to get more flats/leaks due to nails and road hazards and noted the tread is just about at the wear bars. Had the latest screw removed and they recommended replacement as soon as possible (which I pretty much knew). Time to replace them, I was hoping to get to winter and put fresh tires, but I may not make it through summer. I was looking at these tires as well (seems like a great price/performance ratio). We live in Reno, Nevada and get some snow, but the mountains get a lot, but we also don't get a LOT of rain but when we do the roads tend to get slick from all the car oils on the ground accumulating. I think for snow these will be GREAT for those occasional winter days and I think for the occasional, and usually heavy, summer downpours this looks like an ideal tire. How was the summer performance rain? How is the noise compared to the Eagle F1? Thanks in advance!

How's the dry/wet performance of those tires? I was thinking of running Continental DWS-06 in 255/45-20, as I have these on all my other cars at the moment. I've gotten thru many winters with them, including the occasional freak storm that left most of my other neighbors stranded at the base of our hill. I've tried the Pilot Sport AS3 on my Infiniti, but found the DWS to be superior in the snow... I know in the stock size of 255/40-20, there's next to nothing available, but I figure I should be ok in 255/45-20, as there are many more choices... I only ask about the dry/wet, becuase I noticed on tire rack, it shows the Vredestein Quatrac Pro as a Grand Touring tire, wheras I've normally run Ultra High Performance tires, such as the DWS-06.
