nice video instruction for installation since the Model Y back window is so small do you think that if a radar is shot at my car from the back to my radar detector and , not hitting directly into my uniden R3, do you think my radar detector will go off anyway? Not sure how the radar gun and the radar detector works in the event that a cop shoots my car from the back.

Just did this install. Very slick! As an FYI I didn't have to remove the mirror or cut the plastic shroud. I just routed it through. Great tip about removing that metal and routing the cable underneath!! Looks awesome now. I am just going to turn my detector off and on if I run into any weirdness. Thanks again!!

Thanks for the video. It helps a lot. It gives me confidence to take things apart. Thank you again. Actually, it is much easier to remove the mirror by removing the mirror mounting screw than twisting the mirror off. Also, I managed to run three cables for my reverse car cam mirror without cutting the mirror rear housing. :)

Hey Chris I just upgrade from my ‘18 M3 awd to a 2024 MYP picked up a few days ago. On my 2018 M3 I always had the radar detector plugged in to the same 12v lighter socket and it always cut on during power up and off when the car was locked. Would you happen to know if your issue with it staying on during sentry mode is just a M Y software issue? Great videos. I realize I’m a little late to this party commenting on this 3 yo video 😂.

I just tried hard wiring my 2021 M3P. 😭 The wiring is all different so I tore the interior apart for nothing. Well, not nothing...your method will be easy now as I attempted almost the same thing to route the wire. I think this method is safer too as Tesla could change what wires do with a software update. The 12v adaptor will always go on with the car and work with a radar detector. Thanks for the help!

Haha that’s what made me do the 12v thing and so far I love it. I got this adapter where you press a button to turn it on after the detector auto powers off and it’s been easy

No problem! You can. I don’t think the detector can harm the Tesla 12v amg battery. Also, it charges it if the voltage drops too low. My detector auto shuts off after about an hour. This is all if sentry mode is on. If it’s off and the Tesla sleeps, the 12v outlet turns off

Good stuff Chris. I was able to get power easily in my ICE vehicle from the rear view mirror. I think I'll just drop the line down directly to the cigarette lighter. I'll be switching my radar from car to car, so I'll live I guess.

Great install video!!! But the 12V splitter is unnecessary. Lol. Just plug in and out the cigarette lighter plug when you need it. Not much different than pressing a button.

So why not wire the power to the lights near hazard button? If you take off the light cover there is a wire harness that you can tap for 5v. Great video!

Any news on controlling the 12v battery yet? I installed dashcam rear mirror and it never shuts down when the car is off. I wish there was a way to configure that. I really dont want to drain the Tesla battery when it is locked.

I did one with the model X. It's wired in directly to the camera power. Whenever the car is off it turns everything off. This might be a better option for you!

Ok, Tesla service rep says that the metallic windshield and rear window (for defrost) will kill the R7, or any model range. I have new model Y P, looking to add detector situational awareness. I own, V1 G2, R7, E 360c, Radenso DS1, plus couple others. Any thoughts on the windows reducing the range?

False. There’s no metal on the windshield. If there was my gate sensor wouldn’t work

@@EverydayChris well, a Homelink or similar gate sensor would work because the RF would come through side windows. Unlike very directional LEO radar. With the said, your feedback is helpful. The Model Y has a section of the owners manual talking about RFID sensors for toll booths and the like. The language says on page 190 to use the small upper portion of the windshield like they talk about on the Model S. The picture is the same as the model S. However there is some confusion. They suggest that is the best place to be out of drivers view, and best reception. However, unlike the model S that says that is the only place due to windshield defroster to place that allows RF to come in/go, that is not stated in the model Y manual. Not clear.. I tend to believe there is not a defroster film that is a problem when mounting any location except for the small portion of the upper windshield by the mirror. However that is a guess. I do not want to run wiring for other mounting like on the back of the display, and find out RD range to pick up LEO is vastly reduced. Thank you for the response.

Have scoured internet, can't find that remote switch for cig lighter splitter anywhere. The link in description goes to one where switch is on the plug, which would require opening up console each and every time to toggle power. Any idea where you bought the one in the video? I was on board with this install until you said the trim had to be cut. I'll never do that to my Tesla. Also, with the plug in the console outlet it sticks out too far for the tray to fit in.

Fits fine for me and the cutting the trim piece isn’t even noticeable but no worries whatever you’re comfortable with!

@@EverydayChris I know it's not noticeable but if I were to ever remove the radar detector, then it would be noticeable. My Tesla has to be able to go back to looking stock, if I want to sell or trade it in and not include the radar detector.

Hi Chris, I am able to perform this mod but am only able to source a 3 meter long power cable oppose to your 12 foot (3.66 meter) long cable, do you reckon this is long enough?

Great video! I'm contemplating doing this with my Model Y as well. The part that scares me the most is trimming the mirror housing pieces with the dremel. Do you think that this would work with the Escort Max 360 radar detector?

Yes! It’s scary but honestly when the detector is mounted even if you screw up you won’t see it! Blend mount has mounts for escort as well! I used to have an escort redline

It’s because if you have sentry mode on, the 12v never turns off. Check the description for the cig splitter. Works the best

Just a thought, but Escort makes a windshield visor clip that holds the radar detector in place. Kind of like where you would clip on a garage door clicker. Have you thought about trying that as a potential work around? Great videos, I just found your channel and I’m binging for the sake of my MYP 🤣
