Just had the Enphase placed on our home system. Three years ago shopped for a home build with battery back up. The sells staff who came to the house were shocked and would not build a grid tied solar system with battery back up then. Well that changed this past Feb.

That's great to hear that you had the Enphase system installed on your home! It's amazing how the market has changed and now more options are available for grid-tied solar systems with battery backup. If you're looking for a reliable and versatile home backup power solution, I would recommend checking out the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series. It offers a massive capacity, fast recharging, and comprehensive protections, making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and RV lovers. It's definitely worth considering for your power needs. Happy camping and family time!

I would go with the Franklin because they use LFP batteries while Tesla uses Lithium NMC (see reply by Solar Surge to a comment below). LFP batteries have a longer cycle life, can charge to 100% without abuse, use no cobalt and aer more resistant to catching on fire. LFP's do weigh more but for stationary use it's of no real concern. LFP batteries do lose more power in extremely cold enviroments which could be a consideration in cold climates if you don't have a warmer place to install it.

Tesla is also going to use LFP for stationary. Also, except for 100% charge, rest of the things don't matter to the consumer.

Does Franklin integrate with smart panels like Lumin or Span? It’s hard to do whole house back up without having some kind of energy tracking system in the main panel/sub panels of the house. For example, if the homeowner goes on vacation, they should be able to see the loads digitally in case of a grid outage or extreme usage cases, etc.

Seeing EV vehicles on fire on the side of the road makes me believe the #1 reason to go with Franklin (currently) is the type of battery. LiFePO4 is incombustible. It can withstand high temperatures without decomposing. It’s not prone to thermal runaway, and will keep cool at room temperature.

@@RayonWhittaker next point I’d like to make is that if Franklin fails when needed then what do you do? Again it’s not tested or proven. You end up having to get it fixed over and over and over again. Again this is a company that was created a few months before Covid then didn’t do much during Covid. So how can you know it’ll actually work the way it’s supposed to. With Tesla even if their customer service is bad; it’s so popular and with a lot more customers the answers are easier to find and might not even require a Tesla rep to help. 9 times out of 10 the Tesla power wall installer is a 3rd party and not Tesla itself

Great review! The Franklin product looks interesting, but Powerwall is the clear winner in my view. Everything is integrated, it all “just works” and Tesla is now rolling out Virtual Power Plant capability. I’ll concede the AC generator integration is really cool and an advantage for Franklin. I’d counter that if you’re considering integrating an AC generator, then you’re almost certainly better off just getting an additional Powerwall. For example, I was looking into SPAN’s smart circuit breaker box which allows users to control individual breakers in the event that you need to load-shed. After pricing it out, I discovered I wouldn’t have to load shed if I just bought two Powerwalls and it was cheaper than one Powerwall plus SPAN.
@justinfranklinwh4969
@justinfranklinwh4969 Жыл бұрын
Derek, interesting analysis. We appreciate your interest. Span has a great product, but at a cost of 4-5k+ I’m not sure how that and a powerwall “just working” beats Franklin with controllable loads on the appliances that actually need shedding. Additionally, our system is all fully integrated, including ATS for generator and supportive of bi-directional charging. That being said, new technology is a tough grasp for some. The word in the street with installers is ours is significantly easier to install, and zero dc wiring saves $ as well. Same with VPP integrator . Just a firmware update away. Best wishes, we like to think maybe Tesla isn’t quite the “clear winner” you make it out to be, but can’t win em all!
@gusfusses44
@gusfusses44 Жыл бұрын
Clear winner seems to be kinda strong. Seems that use case would be the determining factor. Franklin would be great for someone who has an existing system or existing AC generator or off grid. The scalability alone puts it ahead of the Powerwall for a person like that. Hopefully they can push some more continuous power with an update a some point. Because It will start the 4 ton A/C unit but the A/C by itself will be push it close to the limit on continuous power and I'm guessing it will just shut off. So that's bad. I think 7.6kw seems to be a good median. So + for the Powerwall since Tesla increased that. Spending that much on a second battery for 2.6kw makes it really expensive if it's someone with an existing A/C generator. You should be able to run your house until the battery dips to a set point and then start the generator. But if you are going with the whole setup solar and battery it would seem to make sense to go with Tesla for the all in one
@peterzerfass4609
@peterzerfass4609 Жыл бұрын
Yah. I think the VPP is the killer argument. Makes the entire system way more affordable than it seems at first. Even beyond the mere financials: people with home solar and home battery likely think beyond themselves - and VPPs just offer that additional way to help others/fight climate change on a community level.

When I had my solar and Power wall installed I just had them put what I wanted backed up in the new panel inside the disconnect and what wasn’t critical leave outside in my original panel. It was really easy all 120v load inside and all 240v loads outside. So I got almost perpetual backup with only one Power Wall and no SPAN. Having used the system for almost two years now I am now thinking I should have gotten the second Power Wall and it would have gotten me forever back up capability and central AC on my BU. Since I haven’t lost power in the almost two years since I had it installed it isn’t really an issue. I just like the idea of being able to divorcing from the grid if they make staying to onerous.

Great question- yes, our app allows you to program to a multitude of rate combos. Whether it’s easing demand, or arbitrage, we have several modes like backup mode, TOU mode, etc. Keep in mind our Battery management system can be updated easily for future changes via firmware. Aka…your vpp question
@dougatfranklinwh220
@dougatfranklinwh220 Жыл бұрын
Thats correct - the FranklinWH solution does offer a Time of Use operational mode. This ToU mode is one of the primary reasons customers in California (and other expensive electricity markets) buy the FWH batteries. When coupled with a solar PV system, the FranklinWH system can further reduce your utility bill toward $0.00 using the ToU mode by supplying your home with reserved electricity during the critical 4pm to 9pm window.

Really like your very informational but no BS presentations. I understand that the Tesla Powerwall is not available unless you also get their solar shingles ? Has this changed ? And, one of either of these are not going to power your whole home. More than one will be needed. Is the output power rating at 240 VAC or can you get half on either 120 VAC leg ? Looks like the Tesla surge power is very low. Only 9/7.6 = 1.2 times. But didn't hear how LONG that surge was for. Franklin surge is much better at 2 times. But still not sure how LONG that surge is. Could be a second or could be 30 minutes. House backup and surge is important. Also not hearing the word "inverter" or inverter/charger which these units must have.

The Powerwall is available through Certified Regional Installers with or without solar. With Tesla direct service (where available) it requires solar to be included at the same time. ("Retrofit" traditional solar or solar shingles(if available in that specific area)). 240V. Spec sheet does not give a time. Simply states "106 A LRA for each Powerwall".

Boy that take me 10 years to save up that kind of money to buy that.

The Franklin ESS seems like a very viable solution. I am a little dubious of a 5kW continuous inverter being called a "Whole Home Backup" system. But as they are stackable it can be expanded to become a true WHB. I would like to see an in depth analysis of the mode and operational features of these ESS batteries. How they monitor the consumption of the home and such. I really like your evaluations especially of the battery systems

Bryan! Thanks for joining the conversation. I had the same concerns as you, and in a lot of cases, two batteries will allow larger homes over 1300-1500 sq feet to operate much more comfortably, without fear of losing the charge quickly. In short outages, there will likely not be loss of power with the 16ms transfer between connections. That being said, the 10 seconds 10kw surge can be surprisingly strong and handle most loads up to a 4 ton ac. We hope to publish an app demo soon to help everyone easily understand the process. For people living in sunny, high producing areas that get by on a 3-6kw DC this is the perfect whole home solution. You can always shed the loads

Not a fair comparison. Powerwall 2+ is a PW2 + solar inverter. 7.6kW power is achieved only during off-grid operation while solar is producing and battery discharging. Otherwise the battery itself is 5.8kW. If we are talking about the AC COUPLED battery that will work with any solar system let's compare PW2 with Gateway to FRANKLIN APower with AGate. The specs than are more on par, and only than you can use existing solar of any brand inverter to charge battery. Sure it's nice to have TESLA PW+ provide 7.6kW but that means retrofitting existing solar with TESLA inverter and rapid shutdown. If you have existing solar best way is to install TESLA PW2 with TESLA GATEWAY, or FRANKLINWH APower with AGate. Thank you Tesla and FranklinWH certified installer

I'm not choosing one way or the other but one thing to note is if you need more power that 10kW continuous to run your home on backup you would need 3 of the Franklin compared to just 2 of the Tesla. That is something that would need to be factored in to making a decision. Good video, thanks.

SHAME on you for simply awarding the Frankin more points for warranty because it has more years!!! Seriously, you should NOT be encouraging manufacturers to simply slap more years of coverage on warranties with more and more restrictive conditions. Also, when you compare warranty, IMO, you should be comparing the likelihood that warranty will provide any value if its needed (not just the number of years). There's a significant difference between a new privately heald start up with less than 25 employees (Frankin), a company like Tesla, or something like Enphase (with separate insurance underwriting their warranties). Longer warranty time periods do NOT mean a better warranty! Particularly for Frankin with their having some of the most restrictive warranty conditions of any battery manufacturer, specifically related to temperature, data connection, etc. Couple that with their financial uncertainty and your giving Franklin the edge over Tesla here is just ridiculous. IMO, videos like this do not properly inform consumers, and encourage manufacturers to simply offer more restrictive and less valuable warranties with more years taked on. That's not good for consumers, and ultimately not good for you either. Please, please, please stop encouraging such nonsense.

Of course I had a 2004 Ford 6.0 diesel that was a lemon like many of them, and I saw first hand what a major corporation could do to manipulate the arbitration. Interestingly enough when I had a mid 90's KTM motorcycle that the had problems under warranty and the shop couldn't figure it out they bought it back. No "fixed" arbitration with the smaller Austrian company under the same vehicle laws. Bigger not always better, it would be hugely different if Tesla had any kind of good customer service. I live in Reno and know people that work at the gigafactory, shitty quality control.

Ordered Tesla Powerwalls direct from Tesla in March of 2020. Still waiting for the install. I have heard so many excuses from them - and at one point a Tesla project manager said, "we are only shipping Powerwalls to customers who order solar panels as well (I already have solar panels on the roof) so you might want to go with another company's option." I was astonished - a Tesla project manager telling me to go to another company. When I spoke to the next Tesla project manager she said that was absolutely false and they would be installing "very soon" - that was over a year ago. I think the first one was telling the truth and the second one was doing a better job following the script.
