I am happy that this has been so successful. I always laugh when people say that renewables can't supply a modern civilization. The part of the US that I live in (the Pacific Northwest) has been powered by renewables for generations--starting in the 1930s with hydroelectric and within the last 30 years wind power. The only natural gas plants we have are peaker plants that are used very infrequently. The battery storage described in this video could easily replace those plants.

Just because you Berkeleyite invaders made magic mushrooms legal in Oregon, doesn't mean it's a good idea to post while under their influence. Those gas plants were installed because they didn't run on coal...even though they produce less kWh per plant overall than the Boardman plant did. Also, they were put in place because we discovered that running the state on ONLY the dams and windmills, DIDN'T PRODUCE ENOUGH POWER WHEN THE WIND WAS STILL AND THE WATER LEVEL TOO LOW. That's why we lost the nation's last domestic aluminum processing facility in 2003. There wasn't enough water going through the dams, so there wasn't enough power. They were told that they had to remain turned off for TWO YEARS. Between 1998 and 2006 (when pinwheels were going up and Trojan coming down), the state experienced some THREE blackouts that lasted almost a week each. Didn't happen before the windmills. Also, Idaho has had to step in to power the east side of the state, since the Boardman plant was taken offline. Since you guys on the I-5 are bound and determined to send all the gas plant power to shore up California's 'renewables' abominations, there isn't enough power left for OREGONIANS WHO PAY FOR IT. Thanks a lot. By the way, since New South Wales has put up the pinwheels, smoke and mirror solar, and Musk megacells, the neighboring state of Victoria has been tasked with sending far MORE electricity (COAL FIRED) to them, to stabilize their grid. Citizens of NSW are experiencing more problems with home electronics damage and far higher power costs, due to this 'free and cheap and reliable' generation scheme. Go to their power board websites and read the comments sections sometime. The story they're living, isn't the one Sam is spinning.

Hi Sam, great vid - facts dont lie. As a proud South Australian and solar power convert for many years (used to get 42 cents per KW back in the early days with AGL), this shows the world how small cities can do big things. Just ordered my first EV too - yes a Tesla Model 3 RWD - arrives on the next ship load through Melbourne in late March. Woohoo - the begining of clean driving for us! We will be driving it to Gosford to visit my ailing mother in Apr 23 for Easter. Yes just planned it using 'Plug Share' - straight across from Adelaide to Mildura, then through Hay to Wagga, Gundagi, and through Sydney up to Gosford on the Central coast in less than 2 days and only 6 stops. Back the same way too. Thats right - using a combination of free and cheap EV Chargers including Tesla Superchargers, NRMA free chargers and a few others to make it a safe journey. Hope Victoria can get with the program too soon. And everyone thinks Adelaide is 5 years behind Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane - well guess what folks....bszzzt. Like Sam (and Elon) say - wrong! Keep up the great work mate! PS we wish your wife well too!

The only sad thing about the Synthetic Inertia picture is that GE, Siemens ABB and other traditional players have been manufacturing Megawatt scale inverters notably for Maritime, Rail and Mining longer than Tesla has existed. All these companies had the capability to introduce synthetic Inertia to grids worldwide at scale, yet they chose not to. It took Tesla the newcomer to just get on with it. Why is this so? Well the above named 3 have sunk capital invested in heat engines ( steam and gas turbines) along with water turbines. As Sam and others say, only a new kid on the block can really disrupt.

@mikenewman4078
@mikenewman4078 Жыл бұрын
@@iareid8255 I beg to differ. The inertia is provided by the DC link capacitors and of course some whopping great batteries on the other side of the buck / boost converter. The DC link caps provide current pulses instantly, which is good and bad, unless adequately damped. The inverters I was referring to were originally designed for GTO switches with the base frequency of around 700hz. The more modern systems all utilise IGBTs but the base frequency of those systems hasn't been changed. Inertia and "system strength" are the new "base load" talking points from the Murdoch types and unfortunately even some of the less than technically qualified enthusiasts. Inertia whether it is of the mass times velocity type or electronic is a double edged sword. Inertia without adequate active control can resist one step change until the control systems (plural) catch up. Electrical disturbances are not limited to a single step or direction. Faults like the 2016 SA black system are pretty typical. Due to politics played by Alinta the source of bulk Inertia was located in Victoria on the far end of a long feeder. Tornado conditions tore down something like 2 dozen transmission towers. Short circuit overcurrent undervoltage, frequency falls, the gas turbines try and compensate, circuit trips. Voltage and frequency rise, gas turbines and wind turbines trip, system black. The classic cascade. Trying to co-ordinate controls dancing around Inertia during a fault is a hell of a task, throttle valves, vars regulators, excitation controllers, over / under voltage relays, station transformer / feeder / bustie circuit breakers, a total nightmare that couldn't be simulated. All these items were mechanical or electro-mechanical until not long ago and the feedbacks could not be coordinated. The Mulgrave Mill steam turbine explosion comes to mind, I understand Callide C was similar but details are sketchy. I won't detail the politics in solving SA grid, one word summarises it all, Murdoch. More accurately, Murdoch was overcome by voters, but still squeals like a stuck pig wishing for 1890. In current times Inertia and "System Strength" are the media buzz words. Until recently all non-hydro renewables were politically restricted to grid follower mode. Anti-islanding has been a lovely excuse for this . Just to fill in some detail, SA connected wind farms have been forced to install 4 Syncons (in a totally non optimised manner), yet with some clever jiggery pokery 1. The number has so far been limited to 4. And 2. Coupled with the Tesla Big Battery and 250MW gas were able to maintain system stability the next time the feeder to Vic fell over. In summary distributed electronic Inertia is not just a substitute for the flywheel effect of old fashioned gensets but provides programmable, tunable damping of disturbances that mechanical systems can not even approximate. The old paradigm that generation must match consumption minutely is now finally obsolete.
@mikenewman4078

@@evitoonbundit2453 That is a very fair comment. It goes back to the same team who decided that it was feasible and relatively safe to connect thousands of 18650 cells normally used in laptop batteries (individually fused) and power their little Lotus based car. Without that step nothing else was happening.
@iareid8255
@iareid8255 Жыл бұрын
Mike, you can'r control a fault, all that can be done is to feed power in as fast as possible, (hence the age old pumped storage was developed) and trust the protection acts quickly and selctively enough to isolate the fault. Chemical batteries can also serve the same as pumped storage but generally have no where near the capcity. Renewables tend to deplet short circuit current levels impeding the effectivenes of the protection system. Generation and supply must match to keep frequency within it's limit. How can it run otherwise. You seem rather dismissive of inertia but it is only a damper on frequency, the real support comes from varying output to match load and supply. Renewables even with batteries etc cannot do this as it's afull time job. Incidentally I'm in the U.K. and not South Australia.

the 2016 statewide blackout happened on my birthday, I literally just walked in the front door of my parents house with a carton of beer when the power went out. Mum and Dad still had a landline and after a few phone calls we realized that going out for dinner like we had planned was not going to happen as the closest open restaurant would be a minimum of 5 hour drive; Mum then grabbed some frozen mince, pees and corn, shaved the mince thawing it on the BBQ, she then cooked nachos which we ate by candle light with beer listening to an mp3 player with portable speakers... one of the best birthday ever!

Don't get me wrong I'm not against environmentalism but I've been on job sites that will have a state employed environmental specialist making 100k a year and all they do is look for a single specific lizard (actually what they do is sit a car reading a book and get out twice a day to look around). You talk about the stabilization as if it is equal to a generator, as a former grid operator, I can say that is is better than a generator because it works in both directions, keeping the frequency up from both loss of other generation and keeping it down from loss of load. Reaction time must be at least an order of magnitude better. In regard to the naysayers, when I was operating the grid, the higher-ups discounted the ability to stabilize the grid, not understanding the value of hydro to ramp up very fast from condensing mode (except the company that owned the hydro that is). At that time we were only playing with about 300 MW for a small amount of time before you would run out of water on a 10,000 MW load system (now over 15,000MW peak). I only own one Tesla model Y right now but hope to get a Cyber Truck next year. I have 4 kW solar on the roof but might need to get more in the future.

South Australia's accomplishment in renewables is remarkable. It seemed so easy, especially after over 30 years of world wide fossil-funded denial, doubt and delay on climate science and action. I would really like to see Tesla get some decent competition in the grid-scale storage field. They had to change their lithium NMC battery chemistry out of necessity due to cost, excessive heat and reliability over dendrite issues causing fires. Today there are other battery formulations that avoid lithium altogether. The E Viking mentioned one developed in China that uses primarily sodium. Form Energy (iron air) and Ambri (liquid metal) are a couple of companies that are poised to enter the fray. Ambri also created Boston Metals, a company out of MIT that provers zero emission electrolysis can be used to make steel.

New technology will improve the stability of the systems. On the other hand areas that don't have a lot of sun and wind will be harder to sell that to. However it can be connected to the grid as a backup source no matter the source of the power. In the western US there is a fair amount of hydroelectric if the reservoirs don't dry up. Seems everything has its own set of drawbacks. Why not do what works for each circumstance instead of saying what works here will work everywhere. One size does not fit all.

Future is renewables but the real killer argument or case would be a Northern European country or city doing this, where there isn’t as much solar potential.

Hello Electric Viking, I hope your wife is getting better. I would like some specifics, how many days/hours of wind per period, amount of sunlight Vs shady days and the cost per kWh as there are places like northern Europe that only gets a few hours of sunlight each day, sometimes none during November to February or wind often dies entirely. There is a break even and cut off were the size of the battery pack in just to prohibitive.

@@FrunkensteinVonZipperneck No, they rely on reliable cheap nuclear power from Sweden and France; that is why they are begging Sweden to put down even more cables, but that would mean Sweden would import the insane electrical prices from Germany so Sweden declined. We can't rely on pipe dreams, we need nuclear. Solar and wind isn't reliable 24/7.

California should do this. Someone said that during peak renewable power generation this state is paying other states to take the excess electricity. This is insane but not surprising given the politics here. They should take this excess money they are giving away to other states and buy storage batteries instead and set these stations like this.

Sam, did you know that if you own 2 EVs and power them exclusively from your roof top solar (RTS), a 6.5/5 kw system can pay itself off in one year. That's because replacing gasoline with solar saves 4 times more money than replacing the cost of grid electricity with RTS. Hardly anyone has picked up on this and it is worth telling people about. Anyway, hope to shake you hand at Fully Charged and wishing your wife a very healthy and happy outcome. Thanks for all you do.

it's so free that SA has almost the most expensive electricity in Australia. While Solar, Wind and big batteries are great it still requires a huge investment that the consumers will be paying for. It will be interesting to see when/if SA's electricity price drops to the cheapest in the country. I think it will be a long time.
