Regarding hertz, I've been driving EVs for a decade. They make sense when you can charge at home and use them for a long daily commute. But nobody hires cars to do that. When you hire a car, you're usually travelling. You usually can't charge it wherr you're staying and you usually won't be overly familiar with local charging infrastructure. I'm very experienced with EVs, but I don't hire them when travelling.

Not to long ago, they were boasting about how much smaller Tesla's R&D costs were when compared to other companies. The reason for moving away from the super gigacasting has to do with not wanting to invest in R&D. The comment was that it is very expensive and you don't see the benefits in the short term. Also, it was said that figuring out how to make it work will take a long time and that they don't know if they will succeed. Well, Duh? Isn't that the whole purpose of R&D? They don't see a real benefit in developing something that will bring their manufacturing costs down on all the models for the long term, even after they spent all that money purchasing the cast press machines. Nope, they would rather put all their eggs in one basket full of holes and spend R&D money on robo-bullshit, AI, and a robot that only walks in a straight line on a perfectly level solid ground. Apple, Hyundai & Kia, Ford, GM, etc. spend billions in R&D. That is because, sooner or later, they will reap the benefits. Why would you continue harping about going to Mars when you can't even put a spaceship in orbit?

What I really want to know is how FSD is going to handle things like traffic circles/roundabouts. NY, CT, and NJ all share boarders and have totally different laws about who has the right of way. NJ's legal law is basically, "Meh, we don't know. Use your judgement. Good luck." How could FSD possibly survive that?
@realchris6 ай бұрын
I’m human I hate those roundabouts, hehe! Tolls would be an interesting also if it does those properly.
@Xanthopteryx6 ай бұрын
Welcome to Sweden. Here we like roundabouts. We have over 3.000 roundabouts. I drive pretty often in one that has six connecting roads and A LOT of traffic (two lane roundabout). I have also been driving in a really large one - circumference of 600 meter! And tiny tiny tiny where the middle part is like a flower pot or a pole. Even roundabouts with only two connecting roads. =) Add to that snow, slush, ice and darkness. During winter snow and shit often cover the lane lines so a double lane roundabout is, well, single line? Or double? Or... something in-between? And studded tires wear away the road markings too. Tesla would fail instantly.

Sad news about the interns. It's like a gut punch with mental bruises that last for few years. The problem is like you said, TESLA has been hyped so much that these young folks were in a pipe dream with high expectations to work there. Being young is good. They will bounce back, but I can assure you, they most likely won't trust any company again and ratchet down their expectations.

Although I knew Tesla profits were down I am surprised at all the cut backs and layoffs. I think one of the main problems with the EV industry is just how expensive EVs are compared to ICE cars. For awhile EVs sold well to over compensated wage earners but now that that market has been saturated they need to come out with more affordable EVs that other people can afford and there needs to be a more reliable and plentiful car chargers as well.

A big question that I notice the Tech Bro/Sis's never ask is, "is this solving a real problem?". I live in NYC and have lived here for a while. I've taken countless cabs and ride-shares, and never once thought (or even ever heard someone say) "Wow. I really wish this thing didn't have a human driving it." As well, a ride-share company like Uber would have to make huge capital outlays, as well as take on recurring outlays that did not exist for them before (fuel, automobile ownership/leasing, automobile maintenance, liability insurance, etc.). And no-one seems to ask the simple question, "Why would a rider prefer this car to one with a human driver?" Aside from the Sci-Fi novelty, there is no real advantage. And don't get me started on the "Your personal EV will be a taxi when you're not using" clap-trap. Firstly, a lot of those drivers live in suburbs -- not much of a taxi/ride-share market compared to cities. But, more to the point: do any of these people actually own and drive their own car? Have they seen the interiors of most private vehicles? Not only are they an absolute mess, but full of personal items. And who wouldn't love having to thoroughly clean and disinfect their personal cars every morning, after a full night of randos riding in it, doing Gott knows what? And then, each night, having to tidy it up and take all your personal belongings and info out of the car before it goes off on it's own, into the night, earning you $1 per mile. And since your's won't be the only ride-share or robo-taxi, the already saturated market will be even more saturated and your car might earn you $20 a day for all your effort -- not $265! With all their money, how is it that they can't afford a clue?

Tesla deliveries will peak at 2mil per year at best. Most people in the world who can afford, and want (very importantly) a Tesla, have already bought one. People don't change cars every year. Most countries don't have the infrastructure for EVs yet, and are not rushing to build one. Most countries don't have shops for Tesla repairs, if something brakes, you are f***d. FSD works (kind of) only under very nice circumstances. Robo-taxi won't get through regulators for many many years, even if FSD works kind of OK. Tesla will be in a lawsuit constantly, because of some Tesla crashing and hurting somebody. There will be protests in countries when accidents start to happen, and the sentiment toward self-driving will change drastically, even by the bulls. Most people won't use FSD anyways because it will be more exhausting to supervise a machine, and wonder if it will drive you into a wall any moment. Driving isn't hard at all, just do it safely yourself. I know people in the US are crazy, but in my country, no parent will let a car drive itself, while their child is in the car. Most people don't even like Tesla as a brand. Most people don't even like Elon as a person. Most people would prefer a car with better built quality. The smart people/investors, have caught the bull run and got out.

You could have said the same thing about Tesla in 2016, when the Model 3 was introduced. Nobody thought they were going to scale to any meaningful level given the production hell they were going through, and stock price predictions were dire. Fast forward to 2018-2021. Model 3 became the best selling electric car in the world. And the Model Y? That was vaporware, according to many "experts." Fast forward to 2019, when the Model Y began production in Giga Shanghai. (Experts also predicted they would never build a factory in China.) Fast forward to 2022-2023: Model Y became best selling car (not just electric, but car period) in the world. So, you can say anything you want, Chris. But judging from history, there's a better than average chance you're dead wrong.
