TSLA makes their own inverter now. My installer said the ridecat top will be vented. Just started, 2nd day now in Hawaii.

No man you dont, I’m also a installer/electrician and working with Tesla is such a headache. It’s a really cool idea but it’s not as practical as rail or railess systems. The amount of trim work and prepping is ridiculous. Getting all of the proper material in an orderly manner is out of the question. Now their power walls are pretty badass and kind of fun to install

David on your ridge vent did you cut the plywood at the peak and do you install a ridge vent? Then put the tesla metal cap or covers over that?

I have the same question. We're getting a roof and have traditional vents that would otherwise reduce the number of solar tiles on the best (south facing) part of the roof. First guy we worked with said that Tesla would replace the vents with a ridge vent anyway, but latest design is showing going around existing vents (which we don't want). Asked this question a week ago and still waiting for Tesla to reply.

Yes they remove your existing roof and underlayment. However recently I noticed there are some circumstances where they install over your existing shingles. The panels current only come in one color and style.

You can get an estimate on the Tesla website which includes the estimate for Federal tax credit. It doesn’t include any other assistance programs, for example from your state.

They are class 3 rated for hail resistance. If they were to be damaged by hail, rather than the entire roof having to he replaced, you can replace individual damaged tiles and flashing.

How do I calculate how much something like this would cost my house? It's 2000 sq ft if that helps any.

Goto their site last time i checked they had a calculator to help with all that... Often people are not just saving money but are actually making money by feeding the grid as many places pay the customer when they are feeding power to the grid. So instead of a negative amount on your monthly expenses it becomes a plus and that can make a big difference to how fast you pay off the roof. Though now it is really expensive. If you are wealthy it is worth it, otherwise if you have life left on your roof it might be better to get regular solar panels. Maybe get the power wall, and buy some basic solar cells, wait like five years or however long u can with existing roof, then when you have to replace the tiles then go for this. If you have to replace your roof now then it could make sense but it would have to be within your budget as it will take longer to repay itself. Like 10 years instead of 5 years.

@@Arrogan28 Check your locality. Utilities in Southern California have proposed dropping the credit for electricity fed to the grid down to only 3c/kWh, i.e. get rid of the "net metering" currently. That will greatly change many people's calculations. In addition, they proposed charging $300/yr to have a solar system connected to the grid. TBD what they get.

Of course those lobbies are trying to scare people away from solar as hard as they can. Mainly because people are greedy and would risk destroying this planet as long as they get rich doing it… they have no clue about the true long term consequences of such a bill on the planet…. If we do not end this pumping of green houses gases into the atmosphere we will destroy this oasis for our kids…

I would rather have something like this one on my roof. A lot less to maintain and like he said if one tile breaks, which can happen, it’s easy to replace. Regular panels last around 20 years, I bet these will last longer since they are clearly not as delicate.

Very slow going having to spend so much time on each tile and this shows an easy gable roof with fewer cuts. Explains why Tesla jacked up the price by 50+% a few months ago. Most tiles are not active solar, so you pay for an expensive substandard glass roof (only 20 yr weather warranty) to get just a few rows of active solar. I re-roofed my concrete tile roof myself, which was just laying down tiles as fast as I could, with no nails or fuss, but still took 3 summers working after work, doing a few sides at a time. They are just showing the final installation, not all the prep work which is 3x the effort of the final laying of tiles.

They are going through the process, for people who don’t know the process, like me. I would imagine the prep work for big job takes most of this time. Measure twice; cut once.

@@6681096 basically what I meant was how certain areas of more complexes roofs are put together. For example, chimneys, skylights, valleys, dormers, returns, and wall counter flashing. I mean any bozo can run this stuff on open field areas. Does the roofer need to be certified in electric? Florida won’t even approve this yet cause it don’t have the wind uplift requirements.
