Battery charging. Semi-autonomous driving. Giant touchscreens. EVs have become computers on wheels. But which EV is the best within a $60,000 budget: the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 or the Volkswagen ID.4?
WSJ’s Joanna Stern put three of the leading car options to the test on a road trip and then leased the best one. She also called MKBHD for some advice.

There is nothing wrong with owning an EV at this point and they are rapidly maturing but they still stand to mature much more over the next 5 years.

Fun video. Wish she'd gone a little more in depth on some of the functionality, specifically with infotainment. If you count carplay as part of it, I actually prefer the Ioniq's infotainment to tesla model y or 3 (much easier to control climate, and having dual screens is a huge plus). Also, it's easy to set the carplay to go full screen, which would have alleviated her main issue with it.

That's a mistake. The Model Y is a much better car. When she took over on the highway when it was doing the exit she was just scared. If you are looking at the screen it is clear the car was going to take the exit, she took over after she was on the offramp. I don't know how "Lane Change Unavailable" is a comforting message. Literally means the car doesn't feel confident enough when it is clearly safe to change lanes. Points to its unreliability. Also, 2-3 times a year of supercharging for 6+ hours at a time? + I don't think already built cars are even compatible with the future transition to Tesla Chargers.

No offense or anything, but she obviously has no idea what she's talking about. We don't know why she ruled the other 2 EV at the beginning (the EV6 and the Ioniq 5 are basically the same car), or why they went on a track since there's no test of the 3 cars in this video although "they had used them at the track a lot". It really feel like it was put together and filmed last minute, without any serious test or even a script in mind, although she said she searched the best car for two months! What about cargo space (and the frunk), space for the passengers, comfort, options if any, the different features, reliability, the price of charging the cars (since they don't have the same battery and consumption)... This video is a joke.

For people who buy instead of lease, getting a car with LFP batteries should be a big consideration. No regrets of buying my Model 3 standard range. Plenty of range for me, and it’s good to know I’ll have much better cycle life compared to other battery chemistries. I don’t live in a cold climate so range drops aren’t a concern either.

@@tooltalk counterpoint . LFP batteries seem to stabilize at around the 90% health mark , as opposed to the traditional battery chemistries which don’t really stabilize until ~80%. Also, LFP has a much higher cycle life, ~5000 cycles as opposed to ~1500. These numbers are estimates but you get the general idea. I knew the pros and cons when I got my car, and paying an extra $15,000 wasn’t worth it for the long range, which was range I wouldn’t realistically use for probably 90% of miles driven over the lifetime of the car

No cost comparison? Model Y auto lane change needs $6k EAP option (or $100/month subscription). BlueCruise 1.2 after 90 days for auto lane change on the Mach-E is $2,100 for 3 years, then $800 a year on year 4+. What about insurance cost between Model Y and Mach-E? I see Mach-E has 1.9% APR for 60 months.

My use case for EV is driving from suburbs to city for work, and the only advantage Tesla have over the competition in that regard is Sentry Mode, especially when Im in the city. I find it so incredibly frustrating that only Tesla takes built in dashcams serious. GM could easily add Sentry Mode to their lackluster OnStar service plan so customers have a reason to subscribe.

Great video and a lot of work to put this together! I wonder how accurate the range display is. We all know that five bars on a Samsung cell phone is not the same as five bars on an iPhone. As far as I know there are no standards and car manufacturers might be tweaking the range display to support their narrative.

Watch out what size tire on the ev all telsa uses 20" tires but 1 a 19 " reason is ev wear out tire 3 x faster than gas car, 6,000-10,000 miles reason is it has as much torque as a gas car at 3,000 rpm. So burning or slipping the tread at Low turning and take off. The 20" tire cost 200-500 buck each. They are super low profile and not all places carry that tire.

My biggest issue with the tesla is that they want $15k for the full self drive package. After using it a few times during my promo period, I don't think I would pay 1k, let alone 15. Its jarring on streets and even on highways when the conditions aren't ideal (it tends to wonder when you're in a lane that merges, among other things like randomly slowing down). I get all the functionality I want from the Self-Steer on highways.

I’m biased since I own a Mach E, and have been very pleased with it but like everything each has it pros and cons. For me I like the styling of the Ford better and in terms of build quality/fit and finish for me the Ford outshines Tesla and I like having Wireless Apple CarPlay and a separate instrument cluster above the steering wheel. However Tesla definitely has the advantage on charging and tech features/software upgrades/UI full stop. I’ll be glad to get to use the supercharger network in 2024 when it opens up to Ford. Also in my experience regarding range Ford gives you pretty accurate range indications from start to finish whereas Tesla in most instances seems to be exceedingly optimistic until it hits 50% state of charge and then it starts being more realistic. Tesla does have a heat pump though. I think both are great cars. One thing though for me based on where I happen to live is that there are no Tesla service centers in my state at all whereas Ford has dealerships in basically any town that has a dealership so for me owning the Mach E makes more sense in that regard due to my location.

As a Chinese who recently purchased a XPENG P7i in Shanghai, this video seems extremely weird to me, the three cars in this video represents the best EVs in the US market but are all somewhat lackluster compared to my car, especially the ford and the Hyundai in the infotainment system integration and ADAS capabilities. And the charging infrastructure in the US astound me by its inconsistency, you guys have different charging ports with different EVs? And the 3rd party charging stations all need proprietary apps to work? (In China the 3rd party stations all can be accessed thru WeChat). This is the first time I genuinely think China is miles ahead against the US

The decision of the winning car was clearly made before the video was shot (aka agenda driven content). Here are 3 reasons why: 1. Smartcar. One of Tesla's USP is its truly a "smart" car. From the seamless integration of the app to the car, driver preferences saved, summon, voice control every function etc. Nothing else comes even close 2. Charging infra: Again, nothing is even close. In terms of speed, network, reliability. Even if Ford works with Adapters only a percent of the network will be available and it will be slower. 3. Autopilot - Joana intentionally left out FSD ($200/month) demo that will literally take yoh from point A to B with minimal interventions (if any). Again, nothing comes even close.
