At 9:44 it makes sense, it takes the route guidance in consideration when choosing the speed. The navigation wants you to take the exit so it slows down for you to take the exit. I’ve noticed this many times before when I ignored the route guidance. It does not explain the other moments, but I’m guessing the E6 was different a few years ago so maybe it’s still braking for thinks like roundabouts that were there a few years ago.

My phantom braking has gotten worse since this latest emergency braking software update. I thought it was a autosteer issue, but I changed to TACC and the same thing happens. Just like you just pointed out it shows the correct speed limit, but it still puts on the brakes. I have to keep my foot in it. It used to be a one or two times during this one stretch of road, but now it hammers the brakes at least 4 times now. I have now reached the point I don't feel it is safe to use AP or TACC on that main stretch of road. It does not know how to handle 2 land rural roads at all. So I am ready to give up using it. In the US the Tesla does not read the speed limit signs, it appears that it is mapped and not based on vision in the US. I can show a segment of road where it goes past speed limit signs and no acknowledgement the speed limit changed. It will go several miles down the road before it will eventually change the speed limit it shows on the display. Tesla does not adjust the speed in the US when the speed limit changes. Either that or my car has a problem. I would have expected AP to adjust the speed when it sees the speed limit changed. One of the most irritating things about this issue is that I had seen the reports before I bought my car and most of the people in the forums were saying it wasn't an issue and that it was just haters. I am here to say I am not a hater, but since I have owned the Tesla this has been very much a problem and it is down right dangerous. If you are driving a section of road you are unfamiliar with you have no idea when this is going to happen to you. At least on the local to me roads I at least know about where to expect the car to go crazy hitting the brakes, but I still don't feel safe even when I expect it. Get on a new road you have no idea when you are going to have this happen. I assumed wrongly that I could just us TACC to avoid the phantom braking, but that is WRONG information also.

This happens around Trondheim as well, where the map data seems to contain speed limits for construction zones which no longer exist. It's using cameras some times and relying on ancient map data otherwise. Another fun experience in Trondheim is to take the tunnel from the E6 towards the train station - because the tunnel is underneath the city the car hops to a random max speed from 80 to 30/50/60 - making it pointless to let the car drive itself since that tunnel is really 80 km right up to the end....

Hey bro! At 9:42, I think there's an issue because the navigation indicates you should be exiting the highway at that point. I believe it's also breaking because it's picking up speed limits from the smaller roads adjacent to the highway? I hope tesla will fix this. btw great video!
@lyrith24223 ай бұрын
In Korea, it's a common symptom when roads with different speed limits intersect or are connected. :) It's been like that since 2019 until now. It seems to be a problem with the map data of the navigation system.

This is happening in Finland also. On sections where there used to be construction work but now it’s just normal highway. Still phantom braking. Also sometimes it phantom brakes when large vehicles such as trucks are coming from the oncoming lane. I don’t trust cruise control for this reason.
@RolfPettersen-s4w3 ай бұрын
This also happens on E6 20 km north of Mosjøen i Norway, both with autopilot and cruise control. New road, but at a location where the old road had a bridge crossing a river, an the car brakes hard. I have also observed other Teslas do the same, and it is consistent in all weather- and light conditions. It makes me wonder if the maps i Tesla gets meta data from Google streetview cars. And if the Google car had a hard brake at an location, it is marked as a place of caution that Tesla picks up upon. But all in all, I like the autopilot a lot, and I'm looking forward to get an updated version based fsd. There is a part of E6 close by, where I can drive on autopilot for 95 km almost without interventions (only needing to adjust speed after passing zones with reduced speed limits), as long as I don't need to pass other cars or people that are walking along the road.

My wife's sister and husband have just bought a new EV, and they would have liked to buy a Tesla, but chose not to because of the problems with phantom braking as well as Tesla's other problems with driver assist features. They were coming from a Skoda Enyaq where those things just work.

@wonderboy753 ай бұрын
@@Jeroenneman never tried VW travel assist, but my PS2 has Pilot Assist. It keeps the speed you have set instead of relying on maps or signs. Never had phantom breaking. There is one ring road (80kph, multiple lanes) in Finland where AP brakes in one exact spot ((Kehä III länteen, near Jumbo/airport), other than that, I have not had many phantom brakes on multilane roads. Autopilot does slow down if the navigation wants to exit a ramp, so some can be explained with that from your video. I have not found an option to disable this feature. But without navigation there should not be any slow down for exits/turns. I have M3 Highland.

A workaround to this problem is to use auto-pilot without auto-steering on such stretches. On auto-pilot (single pull of the stalk) it will not lower the set speed even if the map data says the speed limit is lower. However, no matter what auto-pilot you have engaged you may still get “phantom braking” if a truck in another lane swerves towards your lane. Tesla is trying to make up for the poor quality of the maps by introducing road sign recognition again, as it did with the older models. However, it does not yet register speed limit cancellation or city limit signs (at least not in Denmark with my 2023 Model Y). If Tesla cannot get this to work, they should introduce a map correction feature, so people can report map errors, and if enough people say the speed limit is X instead of Y, then change the map in the next update. If my Tesla doesn’t even know the speed limits, there is no chance “Full-Self-Drive” will work. However, that is of no concern, because there is no way I will pay DKK 58300 to have my car drive like a teenager that needs supervision. That price is 20% of the cost of a new Model 3 here. Paying a high price for a product that isn’t ready yet, is unethical if not outright fraud. A subscription model like in the US is the only thing that makes sense, as long as the purchase isn’t transferable.

It would be nice if you could just set your speed manually, without automatic adjustment for speed limits, like you can on many other cars. Phantom breaking might still happen if the car sees a shadow, bridge or tunnel, but at least not from imaginary speed limits.
@hooped89073 ай бұрын
I have a stretch where I live with VERY similar results (just cruise control mode not auto pilot). There are a couple of signs in the middle of the highway that are for the opposing traffic and my theory is the blank side of the sign is confusing the speed limit algo. Been reporting a "bug" for 4 years now. Still the same heh.
@richard--s3 ай бұрын
I think, the car sees an obstacle where nothing is, maybe in the shadow under a bridge. Often you see the indication of something in the display ahead on the road and it slows down... And then this something moves with the car and finally disappears. That's where the car accelerates. You know the Autopilot accident in the US, where the car on Autopilot did drive through a truck trailer that was going slow or standing across 2 or 3 lanes. Maybe the truck did a slow left turn at an intersection. Maybe the car is extra cautious now... but too cautious... Well, there are no intersections on this highway, but the car needs to distinguish a shadow from a truck trailer that is laying across the lanes after an accident or a tree on the road or whatever from just a shadow under a bridge, a shadow of a building across the highway with free lanes or whatever...
