I think there's a whole KZbin movement that I call Cold Nerds and Teslas. Cold nerd's kids make this vid stand out. Mostly guys who probably never camp outdoors, would never camp outside in the winter - but Tesla? Yeah, let's try that! (for the record I love camping outside in the snow....but haven't done it in a couple of years. Car camping, bunk in the back? I've done a lot more of that in the past couple of years. My Model Y makes it almost too easy.) I started doing this in my Prius V. The seats don't fold flat so I made a plywood bunk 1/4" plywood with some 1" rails glued to the bottom (so it doesn't bend). I just moved this over to my Tesla Model Y. Even though the backs of Teslas are flat, the rise of a few inches increases my storage underneath. Also, I used to use my backpacking inflatable mattress, but when I stepped up to a Tesla it hit me that I should get step up to memory foam, so I found this www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077BQJJRN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 4" x 25 x 75" (folds up into 25 x25) That and a sleeping bag, or fleece sleeping bag liner (wear a warm top) and it's cozy. Maybe even better than sleeping at home. I like parking when it's going to snow. If you say the word snow anywhere around a Prius it gets stuck. I did it anyway. Something about it snowing all night... The Model Y LR dual motors is great in the snow. So 10% battery usage in -5C. Good to know. Thanks.

Don’t worry too much about correcting yourself with 120VAC (Volts/Alternating Current). A lot of RV plugs are wire ran really far so the voltage drop along they’re probably just barley above 110VAC anyways. I’m assuming you don’t carry a voltmeter everywhere you go, so it’s safer operating under the assumption you’re already dealing with voltage drop already. There are different calculations for gauge of wire over distance, and you don’t want any portion of that wire drawing too much current to be underrated. Just Google wire size calculator and you’ll see what length of cable is safe to use. Knowing your extension cable is very important. Gauges will range between 16 and 10 for 120VAC. There is a resistor on all the Tesla adapters telling it what kind of NEMA plug is connected. So a standard 5-15 plug, your call will know the maximum amperage it can draw is 12Amps. If you have a 30meter cable, it’s rated 12/3 (12 gauge, 3 conductor), you would be drawing too much power for the rating of that cable. It would be very dangerous as the cable can overheat before the circuit breaker can trip. But you can drop it down to 8Amp in the vehicle and it would be safe. Even if the car is still rated at 0/mph charge it would be better to leave the car plugged in and letting the max draw to like 8amps if you’re concerned about the cable not being strong enough. In cold weather conditions like that, your batteries would be much happier to have any help they can get to stay warm.

@ProRaiKage3 жыл бұрын
Not to credit ICE cars, but you can easily idle it for longer than 11 hours even in gas guzzlers. I had to do it when my car wouldn’t turn off (like actually not turn off after taking my key out) and the dealership/shops were closed by then. Idk if newer cars have similar features to camp mode but that’s a good point towards one of the Tesla models hahaha. I wouldn’t idle an ICE car if it was snowing tho in case the tailpipe gets blocked. EVs def take the worry out of all of this while adding a fun adventure like this video showed 😄

Great video. Now you have given me an idea for camping in the winter. Although you are brave to go up without charging - I guess you can do that you have a model y. The heat pump appears to save you so much energy. Amazing. As for charging. That RV adapter you bought won’t work unless you re-wire it for ev charging. I bought one specifically for the Tesla. When I drove up to Kenora, Ontario, we stopped at a couple of camps and used the 30 amp plug. Also remember to turn down you amps to 24 so you don’t fault out - I think 20 percent less of actually capability. Don’t go to camp without charging your car. I thought it would be good to test out the 30 amp only to realize that I didn’t account for air conditioning sucking up a lot of power.

@@LeonChai I got this one: www.evseadapters.com/products/tt-30-adapter-for-tesla-model-s-x-3-gen-2/ . You'll have to buy an extension cord as well that can handle 30 amp. @PhilT9933 жыл бұрын
In my experience the standard 15 amp connector, which charges at 12 amps, is pretty much useless in winter. I seems to keep the battery at a steady state without charging or discharging. In the summertime, it will charge the car very slowly. The other outlet we saw in the video is a 30 amp outlet. That would charge the car well, but Tesla doesn't seem to sell this exact type of 30 amp plug, from Tesla, to plug into your charging adapter. You would have to buy another 30 amp adapter to go from the 30 amp Tesla plug to this particular 30 amp socket (maybe only in Canada).
@castello5443 жыл бұрын
@@PhilT993 Thanks. I did some rv camping in the past and used the larger outlet in the US. The plug from the rv would fit the larger one. I agree 12 amps is hardly worth it but better than nothing. If you needed it longer term it would charge a bit overnight if not using the heater etc.

This is great! Haven't come across any Canadian tesla content dealing with winter, thanks! Did you set the climate control on recirculate, or not? Also, do you have a 14-50 adapter for your umc? This would allow you to charge on the RV 240v outlet with your camco adapter and with the proper rated extension cord. Then you would have been able to charge and keep the temp at 25C.

@macc90473 жыл бұрын
@@LeonChai With extension cords your biggest worry is voltage drop, amp drop and HEAT! It's not best practice, but you need to make the best of a situation. So, to play it safe getting a max 20ft cord with an appropriate wire gauge of 6awg(max 50amps) or 8awg(max 40amps). The lower the number the larger the wire gauge; like aperature size for lenses. 6awg is the best choice, a little overkill, but better to be safe than sorry. This is better reserved for special circumstances just like in your scenario. So, definitely do not use on a regular basis. Otherwise, being able to plug into a 240v outlet gives you the edge of being able to charge consistently and be able to keep HVAC running to stay warmer. Worst case voltage drops in half, but at the least you're able to draw enough to keep running the HVAC and trickle charger. Anyways, I'm no expert by any means. I'm still learning as I go, as a relatively new tesla owner. Lastly, looking forward to more of your upcoming content! All the best!

When I go on trips like that to camping places where they have outlets like that I have a 50 foot cord that can pull All of the nema adapters from 110 all the way up to a 50 plug and pull max power through. The cord cord has adapters that you can takeoff on the ends to switch it out so I end up just keeping my mobile connector plugged into the extension cord with the max Nema plug and then roll it all up and put it below the rear trunk of my model three and then switch out the adapter on the extension cord that plugs into the outlet as needed unless I’m parking close enough. They are 19" Fast R241 grey colour with Continental Viking Contact 7. If you live in Toronto, I had such an amazing experience with Tires23 in Markham.

@@LeonChai So they are Replika R241?! They look so similar! I’m planning to get the same ones. How do you like them? Haven’t seen many reviews on them.
@LeonChai3 жыл бұрын
@@BogdanStetco I like them a lot! I have the optional 20" for the summer and these are 19... I much prefer the ride quality on the 19"... and these reps are solid (didn't expect them to come with the tesla center cap too)

If a Tesla can handle the Canadian Rockies - this gives me confidence that a Tesla can handle the Colorado Rockies. TBF your roads looked a lot better than what Denver would be haha.

Curious to know how you went sleeping all four of you in the back. Was it a comfortable sleep? How does is compare to sharing a queen or king bed? Would you sleep 4 together again? Would an SUV test be better?
@LeonChai2 жыл бұрын
Mom and the kids slept in the back.. and I slept in the front seat. Pretty comfy according to mom .. as comfy as it can be with 2 kids :)

Is the mobile connector waterproof? I'd be concerned with using it in the snow like that.
@LeonChai3 жыл бұрын
I read that it was waterproof... but ended up covering it with a Frisbee I had in the truck 😂
