An excellent option for any Tesla owner going on a road trip. While driving around my city, I will use the Tesla Service if I ever get a flat. I was going to mention packing an old t-shirt to kneel on. The metal plate, item #6, distributes the weight for the jack. Yes, it's a standard practice to install the spare tire on the non-drive wheel. Yes, for a RWD, place the spare on the front tire, full size on the rear. For AWD, it's still not a bad idea since the car has a RWD bias.

When matching up a spare, the 80 and 50 numbers you mention at 8:00 doesn't really matter at all. Those are the speed rating for the tire. 80 kph = 50 mph. Most all temp spares are rated for that. The more important numbers to worry about are the T135/80R18 on the sidewall. The spare tire you choose needs to be almost the exact same height as the tire that came off the car. (The T135/80R18 does seem to be the right size spare to use on a model 3, but just double check the overall tire heights if the car has something other than a P235/40R19). If its off too much, and the revolutions per mile/kilometer are too different from the other 3 wheels, the computer is going to think there is a problem, and drivability may be affected. The other thing to worry about is the wheel stud spacing. Obviously, it needs to be exactly the proper one, or the wheel won't bolt on to the car. The spacing is 5 (bolts) x 114.3 mm, which is actually a very common spacing in the automotive industry. Many cars have this 114.3 mm so finding one will be easy, just make sure you are close to the same diameter of the original tire.
@MTNRanger2 жыл бұрын
I'm just stating that this specific Genesis spare tire fits the Model 3 has the 80 50 on the wheel. There are some other Genesis spares out there that that don't work. It's been used by a few people and confirmed to work and not give errors. Yes, it needs to fit the bolt pattern and match the tire height of the existing car.

Ratchet straps are great because they are strong and can exert a significant amount of torque. Is there a concern of over torquing and potentially bending the metal attachment points? I would be a bit concerned about this and wonder if this could lead to cracking the glass.

I like your approach to this. Nice job finding this alternative approach. But here are a couple questions I have: If you had let the air out of your tire, could you have still used the regular jack pad? I noticed the top of the jack appeared to be twisting to the left as it was raised. Is that a concern? Is strapping the tire up that way secure enough? What would happen if heaven forbid, you had some kind of head on impact? Would the tire stay there or could it slip free and slam into the back seat?
@MTNRanger2 жыл бұрын
1. Yes, it’s possible that if the tire is too low that the jack pad does not fit. I suppose you could carry a piece of wood so that you could drive under the tire could work. 2. The scissor jack with a flat top instead of the one I had would be superior. But they are hard to find. 3. The tire ratchet strap is solid. Maybe using a higher rated (2000-3000 lb) will give more piece of mind. 30 lbs x 80mph = 2400 lbs of force
